Thanks Richard a really interesting watch. I have been trying out my RF 100-500 with the R5 this weekend. I have noticed there is a massive improvement in the focusing capability compared to when I had been using the 100-400 EF lens on the R5, I guess this is similar to what you have mentioned with the R7 and EF Lenses. Really pleased with the 100-500 so far 🙂. Cheers Keith

Great shots 👍When shooting birds like kingfisher which return to the same perch I choose a small AF point and position it on the perch, register that AF point, then set another button like AE-L to 'activate registered AF-point' so if the camera loses the perch pressing AE-L activates that small AF point and the perch snaps back in.

Been waiting for this one, as KFs are my main target and I have an R7 on preorder, for use with EF glass. The AF seems very impressive. The R7 will be a back up to my 5Div but I am really looking forward to that AF and 15 fps. Lovely images, thanks for sharing this.

Thanks Dale, what a great target species they are, so looking forward to the changing seasons photographing them. I'm chuffed to bits with it so far and to have the EF lenses work so well with the 'R' system. The mechanical shutter is a bit noisy but I really only shoot in electronic now. My pleasure, best of luck with yours and thanks again for watching. Cheers Rich👍

Thank you for the video and your tests with the R7, It is a wonderful tool to use. Nice one I just had my1st session yesterday with the kingfisher and a ef 500mm f4 is set up on a gimbal head on a monopod and after near 5 hours walking around local ponds and canals I managed 1 minute with a kingfisher before it flew off no dives but I did manage to check how stable I could hold that set up shooting bursts in raw and craw to try get the iso as low as possible I started off at 1/800 sec and around 3200 iso 1/600 at 2000 iso I managed to get down to 1/30 at 100 iso lol yeah a lot of unusable images but out of a burst of 41 images Managed one fairly decent shot coming from a R6 to the R7 the r6 low light capabilities has spoilt me where if I had held onto my old 7dmk2 straight onto the R7 I guess I’d be over the moon lol . Was yiu shooting in silent or electronic 1st curtain I was in1st curtain Look forward to checking out more of your videos 👍

Lovely to hear your experience so far with the R7, and to get a sighting of the Kingfisher in the end makes it all worth while.The R6 would obviously be far better in low light and the R7 is noisy at higher ISO's but I love the camera and it works well in most situations and the extra reach is a nice to have, as it the large MP sensor.I was shooting all electronic and haven't even used Mechanical on my R7 or R3, maybe I should give it a go. Thanks again for subscribing and leaving a comment it's always appreciated. Cheers Rich👍

I've recently learned what a poor job Lightroom actually does with Canon RAW/cRAW files. Using DxO PureRAW 2 makes a huge difference and removes a significant amount of noise before you even start processing in Lightroom. The only drawback (other than the price) would be file size since DxO converts to DNG and can triple it or more.
@RichardBirchett

Thanks for watching J and for the question regarding noise. Topaz has cleared it up really well and I'm impressed how it processed it in the resulting image. Really appreciate the comments. All the best Rich 👍

Haven't tried DxO P/R yet as they don't have it for the R3 or R7 yet which is a pain. Agree L/R is a bit poor when it comes to C-RAW. Cheers for watching Paul 👍

@@RichardBirchett Actually it's been updated, for the R7 at least which is what I've been shooting with (thought it does seem to have a different algorithm for every body/lens combination, so they may not have upadted for every possible combo yet). @@RichardBirchett I am currently using the Canon 90D, and I love it. But the 30FPS constant shutter speed, the fast AF Tracking and the built in photo stacking for Macro photography is what appeals to me the most for the R7. My favorite types of photography are Wildlife, Macro and Astro Photography, And the R7 has the same 32.5 MP sensor as the 90D, so I wouldn't have to worry about lower resolution

It would be interesting if you could try the pre-capture option for a Kingfisher diving off the perch. For such a fast moving subject there must be a strong possibility of rolling shutter effects given the R7's limitations due to its relatively slow sensor readout speed. I'm not clear what effect the camera orientation would have on this. Would portrait or landscape offer the better chance of success?
@RichardBirchett
@RichardBirchett 2 жыл бұрын
Great point Stephen I will have to check out that file format. Regarding the rolling electronic shutter, most people are likely to choose the mechanical shutter for action. At 15 fps, the frame rate of the mechanical shutter should be "fast enough" for most people. Unfortunately, the mechanical shutter is also loud for a mirrorless camera. A bit more investigation and testing is needed. Thanks for watching. Cheers R
@stephenburch9178
@stephenburch9178 2 жыл бұрын
@@RichardBirchett In general I'd agree about using the mechanical shutter for action. However I think the pre-capture option forces use of the electronic shutter. I'm still waiting my R7 so can't be sure though! Any week now, I'm told....

I think the file format for precapture isn't a standard RAW file that can be processed directly by LR or any other package. A friend of mine has an R7 and there's some sort of pre processing or jpeg conversion from what he was saying. The OM-1 can shoot 120fps without AF or 50fps with eye AF and standard RAW or jpegs. They call it Procapture and it works really well. It's one of those features on a camera that you think is a gimmick until you use it. I wouldn't buy a camera without it now. It's good to see Canon shooters have the option of this with the R7.
