All they need to do, is quiet the physical shutter, and greatly improved the readout speed to improve focusing and rolling shutter. I will trade up and find the money. Honestly, I think I will pause any other purchases until I know more. The current sensors resolution tears up most other lenses, no need to make it denser.

Attention Canon: I have used the R7 extensively and the glaring issues that need to be fixed are autofocus, rolling shutter, and ISO performance. I could go into very deep detail but I won’t put y’all on blast for now. Canon knows what they gimped, and it will be tragic if the same issues plague the R7 mk2. The R7 doesn’t need more megapixels, it needs more reliability in autofocus and a sensor fast enough that the electronic shutter can be used on subjects that aren’t perfectly still or fast moving. Also ditch the proprietary pre-capture, it only slows down the work flow. All pre-caps should be a separate file. Or make it easier to extract the pre-cap images, like allowing Lightroom and other editors the ability to open them. Sorry for the rant folks. The R7 is a good camera and could be great. I’ve gotten some amazing images with it, but there are enough issues with it that I don’t see any huge advantage over the latest DSLRs. Shooting 15-30 stills per sec with a camera that too easily gets distracted by the background is not a good look. But when it’s in focus, the photos are stunning. Especially in good light. Wildlife folks I sometimes shoot with use much more expensive cameras like the R5, R3, A1, Z9, Z8 they don’t really take the R7 seriously, but they are shocked with the image quality I’ve squeezed out of it. Canon’s R7mk2 could be a legendary camera like the 7Dmk2 or the D500. The R7 is a good value Jack of all master of none, but I’m still looking forward to the mark 2 Have a great day all. @@michaelmcdonald5154I can attest to Mike's ability to get stunning images from the R7. However, the downsides of the camera are so glaring that I ended up selling it after only a few months. The buffer was awful, autofocus unreliable except in near perfect light, noisy IQ, and poor ergonomics (especially for a Canon body). Now we have the rumor mill hyping the upgrade as something that would go against how Canon operates. This niche is not for $2500+ cameras. More likely another incremental upgrade with the cripple hammer well in effect. Canon never lives up to the hype of the rumor mill. You know I'm heffin right Mike 😉

I look forward to upgrading if this holds true. I pair the current r7 with the 100-500 and am happy overall just underwhelming in some areas. As an Owner of R7 for more than 1.5 years, i can highlight few things which i desire to see in the upcoming R7 mark ii besides early release: 1. Change the shutter mechanism: existing mechanical shutter is not vibration free which causes images to be bit blur at times. Dont take away mechanical shutter add capabilities upto 20fps 2. Add 2 CF Express type B card slots, enabling capabilities of continuous shooting of upto 1000 images 3. Improve the handgrip, or at least give option to add one. It would be awesome if its like a R3 big square yet lighter body. 4. Add stacked sensor of at least 32Mpx or most desirable would be 40Mpx, with stills in electronic shutter mode of upto 60Fps 5. Create separate Video and Photo toggle switch like R6 Mark ii 6. Add additional dial in at back side for adjusting iso 7. Add ultra slowmotion feature with upto 720p 480fps or 1080p 240fps 8. Upgrade to better Battery option 9. Change spacing between buttons on top surrounding the shutter button. 10. add atleast 2.7million dots lcd panel. All these are not only fantasy requirements but specifications which are attenable and highly desirable, even if this shoots up the price in range of 2499$ range..

I watched this video this morning. I typed a response, then deleted it. Typed another and deleted it. I've squawked for a long time that I would love to see Canon produce a truly pro level APS-C body. And there are a lot of things that people would want to see in a body like that, and plenty of time to argue back and forth. This is going to sound strange, but if you really want to know whether Canon is truly forward-thinking, and serious about a pro level APSC camera, look for one thing: weather sealing. The easiest thing to do would be to graft a bunch of tech gingerbread onto the existing R7. A truly pro level APSC could become a great tool for things like run and gun documentary work, or serious wildlife photography. But a lot of that kind of work has to go on even when the weather turns against you. If you want to put out a pro level APS-C camera, weather seal it. For me, that will be the first sign of what their intentions are.

With all the time you took to write this comment, it deserves a worthy reply. The R7 is priced and built wrong. It needs to be a truly pro level camera like you said. This is honestly incredible. If you have good light, and don't have to crank the ISO, the R7ii is a no brainier. Your 70-200 because basically a 100-300 2.8... without the $10k price tag. Your RF 135 1.8 becomes basically a 200 1.8. The biggest part, the stacked sensor, can shoot digital all day long and never need the shutter. Hope it works with flash in electronic, and hope they can enable anti flicker in electronic.

I like my R7. Dual V90s surprisingly is fast enough to keep up with the 15fps physical, but it does struggle a bit with the 30 electronic. The AF is accurate but not sticky like the R5 or R6ii. The preshooting is great, but you can really see the rolling shutter with catching birds (little chickadees) flapping their wings. Things I really do like, the form factor. Lots of people complain about it, but the thumb dial makes sense for me. When I had my hand on the R5ii and R6ii at ProFusion, my thumb automatically went there for the rear dial control. And it's currently $1800CAN body only.

Sign me up! The mechanical shutter needs to be quieted. A bit more in megapixels. Stacked sensor with a much improved read out speed to fix the abysmal rolling shutter. At least 1 CFE-B. Precontinuous shooting like the R5II has. The EVF on the current R7 is horrendous. Fix this, too. A battery grip is a must for that second battery. I bought the original R7 on it's first day, June 23, 2022. I was so excited for this camera. It was a huge disappointment. I barely used it. I finally sold it to MPB early this year. I set the money aside to purchase the R5II. Oh, and the price for a new R7 II, Canon, please give us the features we are asking for and don't be too consumed about keeping the price the same as the R7. You raised the price of the R5 II by $400. You could do the same with the R7 II with the upgrades and keep it just below $2,000. Thanks, Simon! 🤞🏼🤞🏼🤞🏼 we see this camera later next year.

An APS-C stacked sensor is a game changer. I’ve been a Sony shooter since the NEX-3 ; 14 years, and I could not understand why the a6700 was just a cropped A7RV sensor. I’ve been asking for it since the A9 launched. I shoot the A7RV 9 (and the A1) so there is no advantage for me to get the Sony APS-C camera. If Sony put out a stacked, 30 megapixel APS-C sensor, it would give me a great wildlife travel setup paired with my 100-400 (or 300 f/2,8 with 1.4 TC getting me a FF effective focal length of 600mm or 630mm, respectively. It would also push my 200-600 lens to an effective 900mm at f/6.3. A stacked R7 with good AF, and a !00-500 would be a winning combination, and make me think twice about my next purchase. Sorry Sony, but adding that combination to my bag might just be a better option for me than upgrading to the A1 II.

I would love a MII. The one issue that drives me crazy is how quickly the buffer fills and clears. CF express cards would help. I am not troubled with the resolution and if you think about it, more resolution is even slower write speeds. A new processor or dual would help. I bought my R7 for wildlife and this means lots of bursts for lots of shots. The resolution is more than fine considering if you are shooting on full-frame glass, you are using the brightest and sharpest part of the lens. I would be very happy if it ended up like an R5 MI with a crop sensor. Maybe address the on switch having two functions. I shoot stills and have rolled through stills into movie mode and not realized it.

Canon, with the R10 and R7 really had something special in their hands back when they were launched. The R10 was capable of 4k60, 10bit 4:2:2 and 23fps e shutter and 15fps mec. R7 had great resolution, 30 fps e shutter and 4k60 uncropped. But I think canon went wrong with the R10 and R7. Firstly for R10, the cam itself is great but I think it's the extremely slow readout and lack of Clog3 really make it a bit of a joke. I believe that if canon release a R10 ii with the same internals and just with a faster readout and clog it will shove the zve10ii, Nikon z50ii, sony a6400 and the Fuji xt4 up the drain. For the R7, it really needs the faster R8 readout, cfexpress cardslots and 40fps e shutter and the R5 button layout. I think that just these changes are enough

I have the R7 for bird photography. I don’t expect to be able to shoot at extreme ISOs, so I think the current megapixels are fine. One CF express and one SD card slot would be fair for those who don’t want the added expense.

Also adjustable frame rates and the same precapture in the R5 Mark II. It most important would be better iso performance in low light. What would be really cool would be getting an 86 megapixel full frame camera that can do everything in crop mode as the R7 Mark II would do and yet give you an 86 megapixels full frame option although at a slow operating speed. Maybe that will be for an R3 like camera in the future? 😊

This is the ONLY new camera I'm interested in. I LOVE / HATE my two R7's. Sold my R5 2 yrs ago, to "upgrade" to the R7, and that was definitely the right choice. I shoot mostly small birds where reach is always my #1 priority. But the rolling shutter sucks. No battery grip is stupid. And the mechanical shutter in the R7 is absolutely worst, slappingest, shutter shocking, failure prone piece of garbage that Canon has ever produced ! I barely ever used the MS shutter on mine, maybe EFCS about 5% of the time for Hummers in-flight. But after hearing about all the MS failures with the R7, I quit using that completely, to try and preserve the life of my cameras. So, for however long it takes for Canon to come out with the Mk II, I'll just have to keep working around all the shortcomings of my R7's, and Lord knows there are many. But really, their are no other great choices, at any price, and believe me, I have searched high and low. Now, as far as lenses go, the 200-800 is pretty close to the Holy grail for my kinds of photography. Sure, a little faster sounds cool.... but Im not sure I'd be willing to bump the weight, or the price WAY up, so that I'd have a lens that was able to do better, in 5-10% of my shooting conditions ?

You're basically describing what Fuji has with both their XH2 and XH2S. 40mp resolution and 8k video from the XH2, plus a stacked style sensor of the XH2S. That said i doubt Canon will make this themselves. One thing we learned is 40mp in crop sensors, is that lenses today can't resolve well enough for that small a pixel pitch and resolution. Fuji 40mp images look soft, especially compared to full frame. Canon would need one heck of a lens if they went cropped high rez sensors. Fuji in my opinion has really done well with their crop sensor cameras.

If the new R7 does not lower the noise at higher ISOs, I will be very disappointed. As several have commented, we don't need more pixels, we need better performance, ....faster read out, better noise performance, and more consistent auto focus. I would also like to see that in auto ISO, we should be able to set the maximum ISO to ANY ISO value the camera has, not just in one stop increments as it is currently. Someone else also commented that the pre-capture is a bit awkward to use and I agree. Make it easier to pull out the frame that you want out of the set. No need for more bells and whistles, just improve IQ performance.

Canon does need to improve the AF in the new version. I was hoping to see it in a firmware update with the existing R7. The AF is good but, to me, not as good as the original R5. If they are going to upscale it some with a stacked sensor, hopefully it will get the accelerator chip and better AF. On a different note, I’ve received the skipping notice for the RF 70-200/2.8 Z zoom that I preordered on October 30th. I should have it by tomorrow evening. 👍🏻

I have never upgraded from one version to the next but I might change my mind for the R7 Mkll. I'm happy with the resolution but noise in the shadows really shows.

Hi Simon, yesss, that's most definitely the direction the R7ii has to take !! But let's just not get overexcited: getting one CFxB like the R5ii is already a much needed improvement, but it shouldn't immediately topple the R5ii ;-) The megapickles coolness from CR is just a dream, Canon might be wise to stick to the current resolution when they need us to avoid high iso noise degradation from the stacked sensor design. But, the stacked sensor is a true must-have, because it also hugely improves the reaction time of the AF. What puzzles me about the CR article is they expect to some departures in the Canon APS-C line up .. but one hand they root for the R7 to go upmarket, and on the other hand they crave for an EF-M form factor low end without EVF (which should have been the R100 instead of it using the recycled parts bin 😛) When the RF-S line extends both upmarket and downmarket, then I don't see why 4 bodies would be too much ..

I love to get over excited... knowing full well that the reality is usually a little less exciting, other than the R5... that exceeded expectations. On the street, we use to say, buy on rumour, sell of fact. If I can garner some ounce of excitement for 6 months, I'll take it. But I will of course give my reality checks. More information is needed, but it sounds Canon has the right idea. R7 should be the best of the best for APS-C and charge accordingly. Its won't take away from the R5 or R6... it speaks to a different crowd. I think what CR is pointing to is a redesign. Just like Canon departed from he EOS R and RP, they will likely rethink the APC line. The R10 should have the same body size and style as the 90D. The R7 should be high end. The R100 should go away and the R50 should continue where it is. Each update should focus on improving the customer experience, less on resolution and frame rates. My thoughts.

@@OrdinaryFilmmaker heheh, excitement is fun indeed (talking about excitement, my local camera store called me an hour ago to update me Canon just shipped my R5ii to them, so I'll probably pick it up early next week 😀) The R10 should indeed follow the xxD line, and the R10ii (or R20 ?) could get some features of the current R7 .. but then I'd still see a gap between the R10-heirs and the R50-heirs .. where in the past the xxxD line was sitting, starting off from the legendary 300D (I actually started using Canon with the 350D). The R100 as such should go, but instead have a R200 without EVF but with flippy screen

A guy I the UK just posted something about getting it tomorrow. You're not alone. Europe is getting some love ;) It would have to be the R10 II as they have the R50. The R 50 should have been the R500... :)

@@OrdinaryFilmmaker Indeed, finally some supply in Europe. On Monday I saw the R5ii was suddenly in stock at Yodobashi Japan .. Almost considered asking my Japanese colleague to bring it over when he visits in December. Regular price (including taxes) is now 800 Euro cheaper. If I visited Japan myself, I could even shave off another 600 euro getting it tax free 🙈 But warranty and re-sale afterwards could become messy of course .. I also prefer R10ii over R20 .. those numbers rolling over were sometimes messy as well .. I thought the R50 was a tad lower positioned than the xxxD line, but I might be wrong here .. perhaps the R50 had to be R100, and R100 rather R1000 ..

I just saw the R7 get another $100 knocked off it's price last week. It's currently $1299 and holding, so it's possible the R7-II could be showing up earlier than Q3 2025! There's a lot that Canon could do, but would it be a better buy than the Nikon Z6-III? Hmmm... Tough to say! The Z6-III is now $2297, and that's a full frame 24.5 "megapickles" body with much improved autofocus over Nikon's previous models. It's also got a better EVF and rear display than the R7. Canon would have to dump a lot of goodies into an R7-II and the price would go beyond what the market would be willing to pay in my view. It would be in a league of it's own, but would people deciding DX or FX choose APS-C over full-frame? It would take a lot of convincing!

I wonder what they’re saving the R2, R4 names for 🤔
@OrdinaryFilmmaker8 күн бұрын
They aren't reserved for anything. There isn't enough difference between R5/R3 and R1 to justify new models. Just look at how similar the R3 is to the R1... and the R3 is several years old.

I'd check for used units now if you can find one. B&H provides a 30-Day return policy. If it goes on sale, ask them to pay the difference or return and buy again.

As a Fuji and Canon shooter, a Canon APC camera with a stacked sensor would probably see my XH2S retire on the shelf. XH2S style electronic shutter shooting with reliable Canon AF performance? Yes please.

I hope they don't copy the joy stick inside scroll wheel of the Mk I. It's awkward and difficult for people with ham thumbs like me to get a purchase on quickly and I have to move my thumb around to find it. All the other proposed features sound good, but I expect those to result in a painful retail price. Right now the R7 is a great mix of price and performance.

Is B&H or Adorama saying they'll also price match their own Black Friday discounts too? If I buy a 10-20 f4 L at the current $2299 now and Black Friday they drop the price to $2000, will I get $299 back?

The R7M2 is sounds amazing. I rented the current camera and liked the results but hated the feel, too small. Would love an R7M2 with a very similar feel to the R3 for wildlife. The 100-500mm lens would be the lens I would choose to team with such a camera but I've also had good luck with the 800mm f11 lens for nesting birds. To save cost the R7M2 could dump focus by human-eye-movement-AF. Its subject tracking is good enough already. Maybe bring it in at $2,500-$3,200. Fingers crossed.

32MP is GREAT, but if they upgrade the sensor like the R5II and have the same megapixels but BSI + Stacked, that would be really excellent. The hype with 8K doesn't really do anything for me, 4K oversampled from 32MP is nice enough. I'd prefer a body a lot like the R6II, which has better ergos than the current R7. Give me the R6ii EVF as well and the autofocus of the R5II and you have yourself an absolute killer APSC camera...then maybe introduce some more exciting RF-S lenses and the system can come alive.

I've had an R7 since it first came out. My only complaint with it is noise in low light. Any changes that make that worse, and the changes you're talking about would, are not what I want. I recently bought an R6 Mark II and the RF 28-70mm f/2.8 IS STM - but that rig is so much bigger and heavier than my R7 with the Sigma RF-S 18-50mm f/1.8 it's not funny!

Great and informative video as always Simon. Sounds great that it will come an upgraded r7. But in my opinion they shouldn't increase the resolution. Higher resolution means more noise because of the much higher pixel density. It would have been better decrease the resolution to around 26 mp to improve the low light performance. Cheers, Bjoern.

If Canon uses a stacked sensor, I hope the noise levels won’t worsen. Typically, stacked sensors tend to increase noise and reduce dynamic range compared to non-stacked sensors, as seen with the R5 Mark II. I own both the R5 Mark II and the R7, and the noise levels in the R5 Mark II are surprisingly similar to those of the R7, which was quite disappointing.
@Operation_aviation8 күн бұрын
The problem is, if they stack it, give bigger res, give a higher frame rate, 8k video, all the things everyone is asking then it will have to be priced as a pro camera. The beauty of the r7 one and why it was so successful was because it was priced sensibly. I wouldn't be surprised if they re model the r5ii sensor to make it a apsc. Who will buy a cropped sensor at a pro level price. Then the cost escalates with cfe cards, battery grips, new batteries just like the r5ii which imo all accessories are crazy overpriced. Overpricing is something we have come to accept from canon as either pro's or serious hobbyists. Will ordinary consumers accept this overpricing and other bs Canon that comes with owning a Canon, absolutely not. The pricing of the R7ii will be the make or break of this camera

I hope Canon makes 2 different R7 II cameras - 1 with the current sensor for sports/wildlife photographers like me... The other one should have a100MP sensor, ready for 12k/16k video! 4K is so small, isn't it???

R7 noise, plus high ISO stacked sensor noise . . . ughhhh. Please forgive my skepticism. A stacked sensor R7 might be GREAT in high noon direct sunlight, but birds like dim morning light. I'll keep watching this space, but . . .

You and I are thinking alike Bill. Not sure stacked is the way to go for the R7 II. I think a 24mp global shutter sensor might work if they can increase the dynamic range.

Hopefully the R7 ii will be what we were always hoping for. I hope everything rumored turns out to be true and they keep the same video specs that is in the R5 mkii. If this is the case, I'll probably trade in the R5 mkii and run with the R5 and R7 ii. But, they have a lot to prove.
