I`am a wildlife photographer using the R7 and trust me never taking the ISO above 100 and to this very day my shots are crystal clean I use the 800mm bought it when it first came out I do sell photos from this lens . at times myself iam just amazed on how sharp these photos can and are. my go to lens and yes I also have the 8,000 $$$ lens but this 800 surpasses any of them just me but i have not used any but this one and still loving every minute I spend with it.

It is a fantastic and super sharp lens. I think so many are afraid of the F11 - I know I was at first, but after I used it I was sold. I am going to Arizona tomorrow to shoot hummingbirds and although I am packed, I think I will repack my clothes so I can fit that lens in there too. 🙏💖🤗

I use the RF 800 F11 almost exclusively, on my R7 > often in low light, with excellent, clean, razor sharp results 🙂 My ISO doesn't shoot anywhere, because I set it myself nowadays (I'm shooting in 'P' mode) typically no higher than ISO 2000, even in overcast and / or shaded conditions. Sure, some times my shutter speed will drop to 1/100, even 1/60th, but I "always" use a tripod, and will typically still get a few razor sharp shots out of a burst. Also, it's rare for me to even need Topaz, as ISO 2000 or less shots out of my R7 come out of DXO Pure RAW clean as a whistle 😉 Btw, I shot with my R5 for a year, then sold it for a second R7 + the RF 600 F11 + the RF 100-400. I know that RF 100-500 is a fantastic lens, but it's just not usually long enough for me. Oh, about the MFD of the 800 F11, I have used extension tubes and gotten it as short as 12.5 ft.... But I've come to learn that even at 20ft, using the R7 crop camera + 800 F11, I can pretty much fill the frame with small birds, like Warblers and such...or even Hummers with there wings spread. So I don't bother much with the extension tubes anymore. Check out my Flickr page for lots of examples. ALL my most recent stuff was shot with the R7 + 800F11.... Much of it, including my most recent Indigo Bunting, in low light 👍 flic.kr/ps/3sNzDS

Thank you!. I have thought about extension tubes as well for that as well, and as far as reach.... I was happy with the 100-500 on the R7 but we always want more. I do plan on using this lens on the R7, but I want to try it in full sun. As a full frame camera, the R5 has a creaminess to it that the R7 does not - at least to my eye. However.... this lens was so impressive..... I bought one and was out shooting it this evening. WOW! The only other lens that has blown me away like this is the EF 800 F/5.6 but it was heavy and expensive. I do though think the 100-500 is a pretty impressive lens as well and I am so glad I tried it..🙏🤗💖 PS - MFD on this lens is really no different than my old EF 500 F/4 that need service......

Great review John and an excellent lens for the price. I think for traveling and if you intended to shoot in bright daylight then this lens is perfect. Adrian my friend - I was not expecting to enjoy this lens as much as I did, and not expecting to be impressed. I was blown away when processing the photos. I bought one and it was delivered this afternoon - I was out shooting it in the evening and will be posting photos on Instagram a bit later. The new tech is amazing. I was in love with my EF 500 F4 until I used the EF 800 F/5.6 and then this one. This is fantastic hold over lens until I can get the RF 800 F/5.6 later next month. Fast to focus, and wow is all I can say...... at least on the R5! 🙏💖🤗

Hmm… I have a lens hood on mine. Also, you list advantages under disadvantages, so why did you do that? You said no lens hood is actually an advantage but you put it under disadvantages. I think you had too many preconceived notions before you made this. It’s a really great lens for the price. I agree with @1Eagledave too. Also, thank you for the inspiration to go out right now and shoot dragonflies! Great shot you had there of the first one posted!

Thank you for letting me share. I agree with you - I had WAY too many preconceived notions when I shot it the first time. I expected nothing special and I really was blown away. It is super sharp and I really like the images I am able to get with it. For me and the way I like to shoot, I prefer it on a full frame camera - the same with the 200-800 - I prefer that on a full frame as well - the R8 (AWESOME camera body, the R5, the R3, the R6II). For the price, you just cant go wrong. I am not shooting a DSLR so I don't watch my ISO other than when shooting the R7 - I try to keep it in the 6500 range or lower when I can so when shooting the R7, I prefer the 100-500 or the 600 F4 - especially in low light. The only camera I would still watch the ISO on is if I went back to a DSLR and the only one I have now is an old Nikon D800 that is my favorite camera of all time as far as images. That one, I dont let the ISO go over 400. I dont think keeping the ISO at 100 is realistic for the way I shoot - little critters and hummingbirds. In fact, my favorite current set up is the R7 with the 100-500. Here is a video comparing the 800 and 200-800 - kzbin.info/www/bejne/rp3PZ2RvbNmAgc0 and I recent one with the R7 and 100-500 - kzbin.info/www/bejne/mJ7ad5-Dn9B_hqc Another great inexpensive lens is the 100-400 - super sharp as well. kzbin.info/www/bejne/pXytioyMrrCtmM0 Thank you for letting me share!! 🙏🤗💖

Thank you, thank you!! I do think I was shooting the R5. With the slower lenses like the 800 F11 and even the newer 200-800, I like both lenses on the R5 simply because the slower aperture pushes the ISO so high. The full frame bodies just seem to handle to high ISO better. You can get great shots with all the wonderful reach on the R7 in bright sun and by watching the ISO. The best lens I have used on the R7 is the 100-500. Not as much reach but you do have versatility and the wonderful minimum focus distance that few other lenses offer. I do like the 800 F11 and it is a fun lens to shoot!! 🙏💖🤗

I've had the 800/11 for a couple of years now. Yes, I was an early buyer. There was so much negativity about this lens at the outset. I was still shooting an EOS R when I first got the lens. It was fine on that body but, yes, with the R5 it is even better. Being a veteran of lugging about an ED800 f/5.6 Nikkor and an EF600 f/4.0L IS, with their necessarily cumbersome tripods and gimbal heads, I fell in love with the RF800 f/11 immediately. Incidentally, a hood is available from Canon but I chose a much cheaper "no-name" hood that gets the job done. Canon's hood seemed unobtainable at the time. The JJC LH-101 hood has been fine for me. In the days of film, this lens would never have worked. Modern MILCs, with their fine high ISO capabilities, along with denoising software, make this lens eminently useable! I love the thing and will likely never return to the ultra-expensive big lenses. For me, they are just not necessary any longer.

@@JonnyPink65 I wanted to ask you something, there are rumours that the r7 mark 2 will be released by the end of 2024 , and as you know this year the r5 mark ii is also releasing so the rate of r5 will decrease, so should I buy the r7 mark 2 or the r5 for bird and wildlife photography???? It absolutely would. It has limitations as does EVERY lens and body combo. It has a long minimum focus distance like my 600 F4 and it does need a lot of light but for the price and the sharpness of the photos, you cant go wrong. If you by chance are looking for a zoom that is not expensive, the 100-400 is a great choice as well. Not a lot of reach but still and awesome affordable lens. I missed shooting hummingbirds with that lens when I was in Arizona a couple of weeks ago. Will have to go shoot them here with that lens. So yes - it is a awesome lens. 🙏🤗💖

Your list of advantages and disadvantages is very good but I will add one disadvantage when using the R5, you have a smaller area where the autofocus functions. I really wish it would focus closer, 6m (almost 20'), is less than ideal. If they could have made it 3m that would have been great at this price. I almost always have it with me since it is so light. But, it has to be very bright out for me to use it on my R7, or the subject needs to be very still, or both. When used on the R7 you get a bigger area that the autofocus works. I bought mine from the Canon refurbished store and I got it right around $600. I tried a 3rd party lens hood from a seller everyone uses and it broke right away and I returned it. I did buy the Canon lens hood, a lot more expensive but it hasn't broken. I have, I am afraid, been glad the hood was attached as it has saved me from drops and falls on this and other lenses. Overall with the right lighting the lens is great.

Thank you - the minimum focus distance is atrocious.... but it is really no different that my old EF 500 F4 as I realized today. And that was frustrating but I should be used to it. But even at full price, for the images, it is mind-blowing. The reason I used it on my R5 is because of the ISO performance of the R5 - I knew the high ISO would not be a problem even in the low light of the overcast mornings. I think I am going to buy this as a temporary lens until I have my funds together for the RF 800 F5.6. I think this is also a little sharper than the 100-500, but that is an amazing lens on the R7. 🙏🤗💖

Great video...

Can't remember ever taking a picture at f11 in my life, except maybe a landscape shot. Usually when shooting wildlife and birds I find myself wishing for more light, and am typically shooting f4 or 5.6. I can see a use for that kind of reach though, for slow moving or static shots. Bright light action maybe, but I rarely shoot that. I am fascinated by these lenses. Just wish they had been f8 instead of 11.

I could not imagine shoot at F11 either and I was impressed. Yesterday and today, I have been out shooting for a comparison, my 600 F4 on the R7 (844mm) and this 800 F11 on the R7. The clarity of this lens is really impressive when it is spot on. It is limited like an older lens on a DSLR so I take that into account. And, it does push the ISO up with a fast shutter speed and only an F11, and it is hard to focus at its minimum focal distance. But at a distance and with good light, it is impressive - not perfect. For so many that just want to go out and shoot, they worry about weight or cost - this fits the bill. I just worked within the limitations and had fun. Again, the results actually impressed me for what it is. I expected nothing but it fits a niche!! No one else has anything lit it - weight, reach and price 🙏💖🤗

Hi! Nice video! I have the rf 800mm and it works great on my R7. Perhaps you were too negative in your video about the R7. Of course one will get better results in sharpness and iso with a full frame, so I would have preferred for you to not compare cameras (that live apart fron each others in different pricing segments) in a video that reviews a lens. And to be honest, everything above iso 100 will take you to serious sharpness/noise adjustments in photo software to get a perfect picture - independent of the camera. I mean, as you said, the lens is affordable, and so it should imo also be reviewed from that angle on an affordable camera (which is the R7 in that case). Someone deciding to own a R5 can easily afford a better lens than the rf 800 in order to optimize shots (not only from a money perspective, but also because they need if fir their profession). It is like putting premium gas into a ferrari and into a family car. The premium gas will make both engines work better, but the ferrari will always be quicker. So, in the end, it is ok to test the sharpness on the best possible camera to judge the lens with less possible limitations, but in the end, I think you give a bad impression of the r7 in the advantages/disadvantages section…

Thank you, thank you. In all fairness, I have not had a sunny day to really put this lens on the R7 and I know it need a lot of light to get the full potential of the amazing little lens - and i LOVE this lens. I do not really like the R7 at higher ISO, at least for me, and that went the same if I was using my 500 F4 or the 100-500, or the 100-400, or even the 70-200 with a 1.4 tele that bought for shooting dragonflies. I think the R7 is an awesome camera but the old-school in my prefers a lower ISO if I can get it I really like shooting pro level gear but I also try to tailor my videos more towards newer shooter, those that want lighter gear to carry or those that are on a tight budget. Nothing beats practice but the gear does help. I have told folks since my cycling days when instructing/coaching or giving advice - get the next level up from what your budget allows. It will allow you to continue to grow so that the gear is not holding you back. If this gloomy cloud cover that has been here all year ever goes away, I will put this lens on the R7. I usually have it with me just in case. Like every bit of kit, everything has limitations and strengths. - the 800 F11 has exceeded ever one of my expectations. 🙏💖🤗

OOOOO that would be a really tough call. I will have rent the 100-500 again (why I still don't own it I don't know - my wife laughs every time I do rent it) and try it. I have seen other reviews where many do use the 1.4 tele on the 100-500. The advantage to that would be that you will still have full screen focus capability and a really short minimum focus distance which is something I really love about the 100-500. The 800 F11 has a really long minimum focus distance and only focuses in the center like an older DSLR did/does. I think it would depend on your style and what you like to shoot. You would have WAY more flexibility with the 100-500 as you can use it with and without the extender. I was really afraid of the F11 but was really impressed. I printed some 24X36 posters and they look as sharp as the ones I printed of butterflies using the 100-500. My personal choice would be the 100-500. It is expensive, but really worth the money for what it offers.... and of course depending on what you shoot. 🙏🤗💖

@@JonnyPink65 Thanks for the prompt and helpful reply. I am leaning towards the TC, since I already own the RF 100-500, which is a fabulous lens for birding. And this week, I've been enjoying its close focusing distance, as ruby-throated hummingbirds are migrating through :)

I meant to reply to your comment about the price of the RF100-500, which is a bit eye-watering :) I initially tried to pair my R7 with my EF birding lenses i.e..the Sigma 150-600C and Tamron 100-400 Di VC, but I had problems with "focus pulsing", presumably because the AF couldn't keep up. So I traded them in and was able to take advantage of a 20% off pre-Black Friday sale, which turned it into an affordable proposition. And I must say that I've had no regrets: The dual focus motors are exquisitely responsive and accurate; the OIS works well with the R7 IBIS; the minimal focus distance of 0.94m gives me macro-like capabilities; and the image quality is simply breathtaking. As for low light performance (maximum aperture 7.1 at 500 mm), I don't think that's an issue with modern sensors and de-noising software. If you're on the fence, I think it's worth every penny if you can manage the price.

That is a construction strap that I bought at home depot. I use it for so many things. It was about $7.00 and it just works. I have about 4 of them. Because this lens has no foot that comes with it, I had to have a way to hold onto the lens with my strap.... and that fit the bill. 🙏🤗💖

@@crumpeteer6477 Absolutely. I find things that just work. Some camera stuff is stupid expensive but other things do the job just as well. Another cheap thing I use (saved my camera just the other night under the stars) is a key chain ring. I use it to hold straps on to the camera loops. There are professional ones but these are cheap and plentiful. 💖

@@robertvanempel5810 I agree with you - 800 is perfect. I know they promote the 100-400 as a wildlife lens but it just is not. For wildlife, your really need reach. Versatility is great like Nikons 600 F4 with built in tele, but it is useless if not available. This set up it awesome!! 💖🤗

This was like listening to myself talk. I too have the R5 and the RF 800 F11, which I bought because is was so cost effective and great reach for the birding I do. I've found that it is an excellent tool - in the right environment. Gotta have the sun. It is my goto lens most days. What I'm wrestling with is does a 500F4 IS/1.4x make sense as well? It is faster, but slightly shorter, heavier and more costly. Any thoughts you could share?

Well here are my thoughts as I am looking for a new lens and debating between the 600 F4 and I can use my 1.4 tele, the 800 F5.6 (a lens that blew my mind), and or the 100-500. I bought this F11 lens after I returned the rental because it is so light and so sharp. I though I would hate the F11 but I don't surprisingly. What I am looking for in a new lens (I just got rid of my 500 F4 so I can get a new long wildlife lens) is a shorter minimum focus distance. While selling stuff, I am looking at that. The reason I lean towards the RF 800 F5.6 is the minimum focus distance is only 2.6 meters and that is half of what the 600 is. My 500 was about like the 800 F11 is. The best is the 100-500 and I wish I had tried that with a 1.4 tele when I had rented it. I also think the 800 F11 is sharper and faster than the 500 F4 with a tele. All these thoughts are going around in my head. It will be a couple of weeks until I can get the lens I want.... decisions, decisions..... Minimum focus distance and reach are what I am looking for 🙏🤗💖

@@JonnyPink65 Thank You! It warms my heart to know that others debate lens decisions in their head too. Ive heard good things about the RF 100-500 with the 1.4x as well. That, coupled with your comment about how you thought the 800F11 was sharper than your 500 with the tele really gave me pause. The 100-500 was a planned future upgrade from my Tamron G2 150-600, but maybe that will be happening sooner - unless I win a lottery. Then I get the RF 800 5.6 and stop debating!

@@sprayhawk808 I debate, then act impulsively based on my wants. 🤣 I have been watching some videos about the 100-500 with a 1.4 tele. I can tell you from experience that that the 100-500 is WAY sharper than the Sigma 100-600 I have . I am working on a video kind of as a comparison between the 500 F4 with the 1.4 tele on the R5 and the RF 800 F11 on the R5. Both are impressive and the minimum focus distance is about the same. The 100-500 as I said, is impressive - and awesome on the R7 as well with the added reach. I am not so concerned with the weight - just the reach and minimum focal distance. I cant afford any of it, but life is short - live it as hard as you can, while you can. once I sell a couple of other older lenses, I will finance what I dont have. Getting an amazing shot is what it is about for me and being able to share.! 🤗💖

@@JonnyPink65 I'm an accountant by day, so overanalyzing something is my game. I think it is really a way to 'logically' justify the purchase. So, I will be impatiently waiting to see what your vid of the 500F4/1.4x v RF 800F11 reveals - Im going to Yellowstone NP in Sept and 'need' to have my after-tax season gift to myself before then ;). @@sprayhawk808 Enjoy your trip!!!! The 800mmF11 is an awesome little inexpensive lens. I still want a faster one for low light but for the price and weight - it is awesome. I also would like to have the 100-500 to add to my bag as a versatile lens. I think if I were going on a trip, I would take that one specifically because of the short focus distance.
