No need to buy the (too) expensive clear filter. Just buy the standard RF to EF adapter (that often came with the camera anyway) and switch adapters when filming indoors or with lowlight.

Now that more people are using RF lenses, I hope someone comes out with a dedicated RF-RF drop in filter holder. Front filters are not as useful as rear ones.

I wish Canon made a drop-in filter adapter that works with EOS non-R camera body's that is EFS mount to EF & EFS compatible for T3 / 1100Ds, 5 and 7Ds.....
@tombuck2 жыл бұрын
That would be cool! Unfortunately I think they're pretty much closing down EF lens production. Maybe a third party will make something like that one day!
@MrWarwickJones4 жыл бұрын
Why do they need the clear filter? Why not just have an empty filter to plug the slit?
@tombuck4 жыл бұрын
Great point! And that would probably be cheaper too. Definitely more elegant than my gaff tape solution.
@MrWarwickJones4 жыл бұрын
@@tombuck hahaha, apparently the filter changes the optics ever so slightly--a last point of refraction--because the filter adapter is slightly shorter than the standard adapter. That's why you need the clear filter. Who would've thunk it.

Hope you bought the Meike since this video, it’s something like $130, not sure… but it is honestly far better build quality and it comes with a clear filter 😂 Canon is good at making money (and good at making gear)… but plenty of third party companies are just as good at making gear.

For a first attempt at this concept, I think Canon left a lot of room for the next version. For the price, you would think it would have come out of the gate with "L" quality build. Disappointing in price, but excited about the potential, especially once it gets to the lower end camera lineup that I use. Great video, thanks!! By the way, just did a video about the new Sigma 16mm F1.4 for EF-M cameras, check out the results if that is a camera line you use!!

The glass insert shouldn't have any impact on image quality (kind of like when you put a clear UV filter on the front of the lens). 👍

Didn’t think about it until now...the adapter only works with old lenses so for new RF glass you have to still buy standard ND filters. You can only use the drop in for the EF glass. That’s too bad. I’m picking up an EOSR and just new I would be able to use the drop in filters. Guess I didn’t think that one out lol.
@tombuck4 жыл бұрын
Yeah, it’s not a great solution if you’re looking to go with all RF lenses, but it’s a cool perk for those sticking with EF. 🤷🏻♂️

Hope they make several non-variable normal ND drop-in filters. Even if they will cost 130$ each. Because this polarizer-nd is bad for filming sky. I mean, sometimes i dont need that dramatic-dark-sky effect.

You're looking at this the wrong way. You're not spending $400 but saving hundreds of dollars by avoiding selling your EF lenses on the used market and not having to spend additional $$$ on RF lenses.
@tombuck3 жыл бұрын
Very true since EF lens are awesome. But you cna still use them with the same $100 basic adapter. I'm probably splitting hairs, but I just wish this were a bit less expensive based on the build quality.

Thanks for this review, Tom. I enjoy your insights. Have you looked into the new Metabones RF Speedbooster? It give an extra stop of light and almost eliminates the 4k crop. But then I can no longer use the filter adapter or can I? So far I had only seen this in use with EF lenses. Have a great day - greetings from Germany ;)

That is kind of an ironic thing- if you buy a native RF lens you lose the flexibility of the drop in filter. Although I'd LOVE to see Sigma make some native RF lenses.

The drop in filters are so nice because they work with any lens. If by clip in you mean the ones that go one the front of the lens,they’re great too but just a hassle to change. If you have the budget for this and all your lenses are EF mount, it’s a great tool.

For what you get? For $400 you can get a crappy green tint, X pattern, hardly 6 stops variable ND :) This is 9 stops, zero color cast and X patterns, it's so cheap it's ridiculous, highend Hollywood filters cannot do that and they cost much more :)

Thing is, polarizers Can be like $150 plus. Plain adapter cost $100 Couple with a smaller batch that a typical adapter raises the price. Also you would need additional adapters for extra lenses, with wide angle needing slim ones. I’ve easily spent twice as much getting polarizers for different lens diameters. This thing is cheap, not expensive!

I think it all comes down to your workflow, equipment type, and preferences. This thing’s great, but I still think it’s just a bit too expensive.
