Hdr pq is better than cinestyle for color grading in my opinion, just convert to 709 and it`s like a log style, and i use sigma 18 35, the result is amazing.

You know what you are talking.. CineStyle is totally fake .. Just raises shadows AFTER Canon digic already burns the data.. No use at all.. Can't believe it is still being promoted at 2023! HDR PQ is not log but use it with faithful profile(closest to rec709 colors) and grade at rec2100 color space at davinci... voila.. you got a lot more information there..

Hello, I’ve been eyeing the R10 for a few weeks now and really don’t know whether to go for it or not. I’d mostly need it for videography - It doesn’t have an IBIS, therefore needs an IS lens, gimbal.. it’s got digital IS (as I’ve seen) but the video was still shaky. Have you tried recording handheld videos ?

@@nataliamlatec5466 you compensate for the lack of IBIS by using a gimbal or a sturdy tripod. Even better with a stabilized lens. The 50mm is stabilized and it’s decent for basic video. Ibis on canons is terrible. Panasonic & sony do a better job.

Hi Zach... Amazing colors and great video.. I am not a professional filmmaker but I like to read and learn a lot.. You are wrong like %99 of the other Canon shooters about the cinestyle profile.. It is really not a flat profile. What it does is raising the shadows in camera but after the canon matrix burning the footage. So it is actually the same thing you can do at post and results are way too noisy shadows.. There is a reddit topic about this. A guy had managed to open the PF file and proved this. Alternatively..everybody talks about the neutral profile but I believe the faithful profile on Canon is the closest to REC709 colors. So it is always a good idea to shoot at Faithful and color grade slightly... This is the case for 8 bit... But... Again you missed another super important detail about this camera.. It has HDR PQ mode which is 10 bit. Not a true log but it has almost %50 more dynamic range than the 8 bit ones. Shoot at HDR PQ mode and grade at Resolve at Rec2100/2020 color space than export obviously at rec709.. You will be amazed.. There is an official Canon lut to convert the rec2020 color space to rec709 too.. This is indeed a mini pocket cinema camera for the little money... Others already mentioned about the sigma 18-35 f1.8.. add a mist filter.. and voila... cheers mate.. keep up the great work.. I thought this was a HDR PQ video. I used HDR PQ on the R6 and it was not ready for prime time. The HDR PQ on this along with neutral and contrast reduced along with D+ HTP should give you 13 stops of 10 bit video DR after conversion to REC709, the cinestyle may only give you 9+ stops of 8 Bit. If you had used HDR PQ and compared it to Cinestyle you would have stumbled upon something bigger then Zeek and Magic Lantern

I have had my R10 for 2 months now, a separate door for the SD card would have been nice and the low light performance isn't as good as full frame but it's a nice little camera. The AF is amazing and the focus peaking for manual lenses is pretty good.

I bought the R7 C-log 3,10 bit 422, 7K sensor down sampled to 4K. Put some nice glass on it and your good to go.

Really makes me wish more lenses adapted to the M mount line, because this camera is essentially the same as previous cameras (some without the 4k 60 crop), just with a RF mount.

With this hack, this seems to be an okay competitor to the zv-e10 minus rolling shutter and autofocus. similar price point and if shooters are interested in building a canon based lens collection and scaling to the R5C or the Komodo/Raptor, this actually seems like a pretty affordable route to start with!

As someone who primarily shoots handheld on pocket 6k this r10 has far surpassed my expectations. 10b without the hdr mode would have been nice but the 6k downsampled image on this thing is very impressive! Im not pixel peeping by any means but with the ef adapted sigma 18-35 and cinestyle profile im truly hard pressed to spot the difference between this and the bmpcc 6k. A solid AF system is a huge bonus too!

Hi Zach, German guy here starting to work his way into cinematic video just for fun/hobby, Got me the R10 because of your (and others) review. You*re funny, man. Got one question: When using a cinematic lense with wide aperture (35mm 1.2) how would be my autofocus setting if I want to achieve a shallow depth of field. Let's say camara starts behing some flowers or tree branches which should remain really unsharp, lifting camera up to my model which the should then be sharp. Do I completely turn off AF and pre-focus manually on my model before (What if model is walking/moving)? Or do I set AF on with people tracking? Thanx for a start point into cinematic videography... Shoot in PQ and use davinci hdr to 709 color managment. You get 10 bit and much better dynamic range than standard profile.

Would you prefer the R10 over a Sony A7III? I am able to get a A7III in very good conditions for a little less than the R10. I want to use for both photo and cinematic videography and that's why i am struggling because A7III can't record 4k 60fps. Not sure if this is a showstopper because R10 can record 4k 60 but only with crop and the videos aren't stabilized. Beside that i am shooting street/people. Want to go with a focal lense at around 35mm and a zoom with around 16-50mm f2.8 or even better

Hi, thanks for sharing this video. Sigma 18-35mm (EF mount) would be a great option too. Would you compare R10 + (viltrox) focal reducer VS "old" eos R autofocus and high ISO noise level ? Regards

Hi Frederic.. viltrox focal reducer has its own issues.. With sigma, since it is an apsc lens, you cant use the 18-24 part of the zoom.. Also it does not let you go below f1.8 on any lens other than canon lenses.. Electronic stabilizer also fails when using focal reducer.. And it is already discontinued due to Canon's warning against Viltrox.. Also it is not cheap IMO.. I would invest on full frame better EF/RF glass instead because now or later you will probably upgrade to a real full frame.. :) Meike EF-RF adapter with drop in ND filter might be a good accessory if you are serious on filming with R10/R7...

As focal reducer loses some native adapter informations I guess EOS R is still worth buying if you are looking for full frame depth of field with autofocus. For better High ISO performances and (even better?) autofocus, R6 mark II would be great but out of budget. Maybe in 4-5years... Cheers

Yep... shoot at HDR PQ and grade at Davinci Studio at rec 2100 color space... Export at rec709 and you will have way much better dynamic range.. Not a true log.. but almost a clog2 .. and you can use the Canon official bt2020 to bt709 converting lut for clog2 ... try it ..

you brought back nightmares to me with mentioning cinestyle , like it's 2016 , I either quit making vidoes or buy a camera with decent dynamic range , this cinestyle does not worth it in 2023.

Yup... CineStyle was never a flat profile. It never worked but It is so strange that still many KZbinrs are advising it. It was proved that it has nothing to do with being close to log. There is a PF editor and everyone can check what it is doing. It is actually raising the shadows AFTER Canon digic already wrote the matrix... So it is only doing what everyone can do at post production.. Super funny to still see it being discussed... However.. This R10 has HDR PQ mode and altough it is not a log profile... it is 10 bit and produces %50 larger files than standard mode with more color information in Rec2020 color space. And you can grade it in Davinci Studio... No more crazy blown out highlights .. Can't believe noone is still not talking about this .. Not enough.. I may consider starting a new YT channel about this :) .. R10 is great... Only concern is the rolling shutter but hey.. this is 800usd camera.. HDR PQ is almost clog 2... Try it..

As a Canon M50 user, we want to upgrade our skills. The R10 kit lens of sucks and it must have C-log. Without those it is never a great camera. 18-45 F4.5 (fastest)---- what is it?

Never a great camera? Says who? Great photos and video have been made on cameras for close to a 100 years. Don't get trapped by specs and as far as aperture. Is your entire goal to shoot wide open or low light? It's a kit lens....its a good cheap entry level lens that suits a balanced range of scenarios. It's better you learn to shoot with this aperture than get again trapped by the myth that the only good photos have a blurry background. If you have a Canon m50, this camera doesn't really help you upgrade your "skills". It's just giving you access to better feature set. But will those make your images/videos better? Not if you aren't good with understanding of the basics or even the capabilities.
