Great review. You really put this through its paces in real life situations. This is going to be my first DSLR as a result. I’ll be doing some vlogging and other video for my channel and also taking pics. Question: in addition to the kit lens that is included, is there one additional lens you would recommend getting with the camera as I slowly build up my equipment. Can’t believe you only have 1k subs by the way; that will change very very soon.

Thank you so much for your kind words. I really appreciate it. For vlog, the best lens to pair with the SL2 would be the 10-18STM. For the sit down interview style shots, get the 24mm f2.8 STM pancake. Those two lenses are all you need to start a youtube channel. If you need something with a little more zoom range then the 18-135STM is really great too.

This is a really great camera. I just picked one up yesterday in the kit form and also got a Rode Video Mic for it. The only 2 drawbacks are that the mic cable interferes with rotating the screen and that the SD card is on the bottom. I primarily leave it setup to record my YT videos, which means I have to remove it from the tripod to get the SD card out

The 80D seems to make your face look a little red (5:15) where the SL2 seemed to make your face look a normal color (5:33)... at least in this video. I had seen other videos comparing Canon to Sony and it seemed Canon cameras, in general, made people's faces look red. Is the trick to prevent that in the settings, or is it just to have plenty of light (as you do at 5:33)?

still relevant. last week, i used it on a paid gig as the "a cam" due to the wonderful dual pixel af. footage was clean. interviewee looked great and was in FOCUS! shot duel sound to a zoom f4 and then back to the sl2's audio in. this way i have two pro mics (boom and lav), access to a headphone jack to monitor and i employed the safety track as a backup. less than $400 during the holiday sale. i'm pleased.

Hey there. At the moment, I'm still using a Canon Powershot SX40HS. Because of the limitations on that Bridge-camera, I am interested in buying me the EOS 200D as my first DSLR. What I really want to try out, is some Astrophotography. I tried it using the SX40HS, but all I can see because of the small sensor is the moon and the brightest stars (Orion, ...). Do you think that the 200D (with the standard 18-55mm IS lens) will perform a lot better, or do you think that it will only be a small improvement?

I would go SL2. You get the EF mount and I prefer DSLR over mirrorless for stills. I don't know if we can do a comparison. We don't have the SL2 anymore.

If you want to change lenses and have an external mic, then sl2. If you want something small and light with built in audio, then g7x!

If you’re on a budget either the canon 24mm f2.8 stm pancake or 50mm f1.8 stm. The 24mm will be a bit wider so if you need it for vlogs that’s best. If you have more money to spend, the sigma 18-35mm f1.8 is fantastic!

Not at all. Always recommend having a microphone like the VideoMic Pro. These cameras have awful preamps and noise...however that doesn't stop people like Liza Koshy from doing it. She makes millions of dollars and she still shoots on an 80D with no mic on top. Doesn't make any sense......sounds like crap and all she needs is a small $200 mic to make it sound professional.

Stupid point or question: when you had the 1,700 lens on it, why didn't you demonstrate it? I'm dubious about buying an expensive body, even though I loved what I saw of the a6500. I love going "Ooooo..." whenever you use it. But in 2 years or less, it will be a 1,000 doorstop. The video blew me away just in 1080. LOVED it's low light capacity. But there goes another grand for the lens...that you'd have to adapt if you switched out later. :( I have nothing now, so I can go either way. I'd like lots of options. Not with Sony, sounds like

Got mine 30 minutes ago. Small, light and many functions. Too soon to judge but feel really cheap compared to my old DSLR's. Buttons are in very different places. Lot's of plastic, but Fiberglas reinforced and the buttons feel a bit spongy. I am not sure how strong these are, but I am a big fan of Canon. At the end of the day, it is about the insides and what it can do.

I have been into photography since 1964 shooting with all types of cameras, lenses and film. Moved into video in 1992 then digital Canon and Sony in 1998 as a published digital photog in 1998. My prediction was that eventual video cams would take over analog AND digital still work. I traded my 40D for a Canon M50 - and have been super disappointed. I sent the M50 back to Canon and replaced it with a Canon SL2 believe it or not. That gear with a Tamron 18-400 is a delight. Whether amateur or Pro - it is hard to argue the difference in capability and quality with more expensive cameras. Whether vblogger or garage shooter - this is all I need to spend to get quality images and MP4 video segments.

Question... Love SL2 but its the autofocus points that pushes me towards the M6. What if I am looking to video kids? Would SL2 be the way to go or still move towards the M6 for better focus? That really is the deciding factor for me.

I was worried about the same thing. Turns out the autofocus points don't matter in video mode. It uses duel pixel focus exactly like the T7i and 80D. In camera mode, the 9 focus points are a problem compared to the 45 focus points on the T7i or 80D. If you research duel pixel focus, it will sort of blow your mind. Hard to believe they put that in a $600ish camera.

I think you’ve convinced me to get the sl2 as my first dslr! I’ve been debating if the (currently) $200 price difference between the sl2 and t7i is worth it. Except for the larger amount of auto focus points on the t7i they seem nearly identical in every other way. Any thoughts between the two?

No reason to get the t7i unless some of the photography features stand out to you. Personally, I really love the smaller size of the SL2 and think its a fabulous little camera!
