I bought the Panasonic - LUMIX DC-ZS70 instead and have been amazed with how crisp/clear/sharp the 4k video is. I read someone's comment about being able to change the sharpness settings on this canon though, and I wondered if you have tried shooting video after adjusting those settings to see if it was less "soft"? (They said after hitting the menu button while on video setting you can change it to "standard" instead of "auto" then bring up some menu including sharpness/contrast.) I am really curious if that helps at all.

to make the 4k better you need to lower the brightness level of it, I wouldnt say it's a vlogging camera, but it's good for photos, zoom pics and quick shots

Just bought this camera a week or so ago. I have 2 G model point and shoots so familiar with the concept. Reviews elsewhere panned the sharpness of the lens - I did not see this at all. Very sharp, as noted - good colors. Definitely a long zoom, a steady hand or support a benefit. First thing I noticed is this camera is equipped only for a wrist strap, not a over the head strap. Not sure about this. Also while I understand many have no desire to read the manual - an old-timer like me needs to know how to do things, what was included in the box was more of a quick start guide than anything of substance. Are we really saving trees? Or money for Canon! Thanks for the review.

When you say "the 4K is a bit SOFT, and really isn't a big improvement over the 720P".. are you saying the sharpness of the 4 K isn't as good as the 720P or are you saying that the Canon's 4K sharpness isn't as good as the camera alternatives out there? Also, wouldn't the resolution of the 4K far out distance the 720P?.. that, in itself, making it a significant improvement over the 720P? I'm a bit confused.

When exactly did I say 720p?? In the video I compared it to the 4k to the 1080p video quality, not the 720p. As for your question: The 4k isn’t a noticeable improvement over the camera’s own 1080p video. Additionally, it is also much softer than comparable cameras shooting 4k video. And what I mean by softer, is the lack of sharpness and dynamic range.

I do not need the flip-up screen as I do not vlog. Do both basically take equally good photos/videos in auto mode, please? I'm considering the 720 as it is a bit smaller and lighter. Can this charge via USB? Also, I have the Panasonic ZS70 and really don't like it. I use it exclusively for shooting 4k video. Its auto focus seems to have a really hard time and the settings are too fiddly. It's interesting that I'm looking to get rid of that camera with maybe this Canon one and you recommend it.

It should be able to charge via USB. I prefer the ZS70 for its 4K Video capability. And honestly the autofocus on this camera isn't anywhere close to perfect.

I just want a compact and lightweight camera with high zoom to complement my phone in the mountains. Poor optics on smart phones are the bane of my existence when trying to take pictures of far-away subjects. Seeing the price of a new sx730 at $380 only a few years ago is so depressing... I refuse to pay more than MSRP, so I'm stuck waiting for Canon to ship out new 740 stock or for the compact camera trend to die so people start selling them at more reasonable prices. I would jump on a $400 price point.

I just bought it yesterday. I've been trying and playing it around. It's been good for me but I can't wait to try it on plane spotting after winter. What's bugging me off is that when you record, and it is focused on the nearest thing like when you do vlog like waking up and it's focused in your blanket and when you switch it over to your face it has a lot of difficulties focusing on you. You have to stop recording and let it focus and start recording again. I just got it so. I'll see how it will work for me.

I would recommend the iA+ setting for nighttime videos. But keep in mind that this is camera has a small sensor, so low light performance will not be that good

Hi I really need some help and advice please. I would like to buy a compact camera with a good zoom, good video, picture quality, touch screen if possible, anti shake as I have a small tremor and RA in my hands but I really would like to buy one and finally take nice photos of birds, family so fast moving, and would like to photo water that looks like foggy/steamy if you know what I mean. I got an older rx100 but i am thinking of picking up one of these to supplement it for the longer reach stuff. I also really like the feel of the camera (I have sx720), over the rx100, but the quality of the 720 isn't there for me, so I am looking at trading up for it.

720 and 740 are very similar if you look at the specs. 710 is "worse". 740 does have some minor improvements compared to 730. 720 and 730 are "identical".

It depends on what quality you expect. The sx730 has decent video quality for a beginner. The G7x certainly has better quality but has a higher price tag. For a beginner, I recommend the SX730

I got the sx740 for Christmas as a gift and here I am still researching cameras so I can decide to exchange/return before the return period ends. Here are my thoughts about the sx740: I like the way it looks and feels, there are good feature options, images are good for a point and shoot, and the zoom is great. I wanted a camera that could take better images then my Google Pixel 2xl. Although I normally have my phone on me, I have missed out on taking many pictures because my phone battery is low or I don't want to take the chance on damaging my phone by taking it in and out of my purse. (I miss the old days where I had my Samsung 105ti 35mm film camera to solely rely on and ran to develop my 24-36 pictures when the film was done vs over the years having 20,000 pictures on memory cards left undeveloped.) Back to the sx740. I know it has a bigger sensor then my Pixel 2xl but really I haven't seen much difference. I don't care of the 4k feature (to me that feature is for marketing purposes to get a buyer to buy a camera just as 4k TV's). I use a camera for images mostly. I feel the sx740 is more of a vlogging camera. Overall, in my opinion this is a good camera but it isn't for me unless I decided to jump on the You tube vlogging train. For the price of the camera, there are cheaper options that will deliver the same as point and shoot cameras go. My 6 year old Samsung PL120 14mp and my 8 year old Kodak easyshare c195 are the same quality. You can get good photos even without a viewfinder. It will work well for that purpose.
