Canon SX740 HS - Surprisingly Good?

Apart from quality and the specs of this camera (i was checking the prices and reviews), it is rare nowadays to watch a video without loud, obnoxious music, without blinking stuff, without a person talking like they have a N2 emergency in front of the locked door of the restroom and have no manners. Thank you for the peaceful and pleasant video. By the way, one should make video Using the product, so people can see directly, and actually show different photos and videos in different light settings. Otherwise, it is just an opinion with no basis.

Excellent video, so thank you very much. Your points are clear and concise, and (like another viewer) I appreciate not being bombarded with loud, obnoxious music and rapid-fire delivery. Very professional! Based on this video, I have subscribed to your channel and look forward to seeing more of your videos. Your mentioning that the 740 is "compelling" is spot on. This camera's new features are simply too good to pass up. I will be upgrading to the 740 from the 720 (rather than the 730). I've loved using the 720 for a long time (except in low light), and I look forward to the nice features that have been added to the 740. (Still wish it had a touch screen) :-( I might mention that I also use the G7X which is an excellent pocket camera, especially in low light. But it doesn't have the great zoom of the SX700 series which is a "must" when traveling. By the way, even at my age (73) I have steady enough hands to shoot handheld at 40X, so I never miss a shot that requires a long reach. With regard to pocket cameras, I also have SLRs with decent lenses which are great but I never(!) take them on a trip. Big, bulky cameras end up staying in the hotel room, whereas these wonderful little pocket cameras are always with me.

I appreciate your intelligent, articulate, respectful, profanity-free presentation ( Why do so many young KZbinrs think that hurling the "F" word at people every 4 words is the only way to be "hip"?). I am just getting ready to launch a new channel myself. I have the Canon EOS Rebel 5th as my starter camera ( got it as a discontinued model from Walmart). But I want a compact camera that is one that can travel in my purse and be less intrusive in public videoing AND be more budget-friendly for a beginning vlogger. Hi Joshua , I truly hope you will get to read this comment . I honestly enjoyed watching your video as I am somewhat 'on-the -fence' about getting this camera to use on You Tube. I have the same concern you eluded to in that there is no mic input. I have watched videos , read articles , and there is no one and no where I can find what the sensitivity of the onboard mic is. I was able to find out it is stereo , but I can not find out the affective range for the spoken word. I understand if you are holding the camera there would not be a problem , but if you are using a tripod and are several feet ( 5' ) away , would the mic still pick up the vocals at a usable level , with no background noise to interfere ? Thank you for you help . Gary 

Looks good, sadly the 'LCD Screen' is NOT touch, which would allow the Shooter to choose the point of focus.

This shooter caught my eye specially with the digic 8 chip an a better IS solution for my DT's. No mic jack? Hmmmm can a BT mic be used? No doubt tho at this price it has alot of great features I been looking for. Was hoping to see some shot comparisons in your review. Lot of talk but can it walk?

Thank you Joshua for all the opinion for a good camera and it is for those who are fascinated by somewhat flexibility and a huge zoom range and obviously capable of generating results that are not bad in any sense. But did you made this video using Canon powershot SX 740? I don't think, if you please let me know the truth. If I really need a compact camera, do this perform to produce a result as good as Canon GX 9ii or even Sony Hx 99 at least? If you have a great gear at the same price you don't have to rack your brain about zooming capabilities and results that are way better than this one. Sony rx100 cameras are the best in the business of compact cameras and they are insanely priced and they produce stellar images because of their sensor sizes, their autofocus system, and low light performances. I don't know why we run towards 1/2.3 Inch sensor sized 40times zooming capabilities of such a camera when you could easily find a fantastic combination in low budget mirrorless cameras in the same price range which are capable of generating stellar images. Ofcourse you have so many things punched in a compact camera that isn't very difficult to fall prey to these ones which may make you cry for your decision in near future. I believe Canon's g9x ii at the same price is the best choice if one really wants to walk light and be happy with the fantastic results. If someone is serious about sports and wildlife one must think of a DSLR or a mirrorless cameras and enjoy the liberty of getting a bliss from the photographs. I'm not in a way making little of this camera but you must not avoid what is better at same price range you may even consider way better Lumix FZ 300, though bulkier, zs70, ZS 100/200 and very good and a little more expensive LX 100 Lumix cameras. Canon powershot 5x, 1x are pricy alternatives to budget powershot SX 740.

Hi! I need a little help over here! :) I'm looking for a camera to bring and record videos during concerts in medium arenas (~20000) which only allow compact cameras. I already have a Panasonic Lumix LX15 that I plan to use which has a good aperture/luminous sensor but a small zoom. I know it's expected with a 1" lens but anyway, I'm tempted to also buy a camera with a bigger zoom. I'm eyeing this camera but I'm hesitating because of the small aperture it has. You said in your video that despite a smaller sensor this camera has technology to help capture better images in light compromised situations. Do you think it can be enough to have good videos in concerts? Do you think the 4K video quality can compare with the LX15? Would love to have your advice on it. Thanks!

Have you thought about the Panasonic zs series cameras? Might serve you better for several reasons, among which are battery compatibility with the batteries you already have! :)

I.E. what you spend extra in the camera means that you get a second battery for your system, so you can record longer!

It really depends on what your gonna use it for specifically. If your vlogging and you need the flip screen, take the SX740. Image quality, hands down, G9x. It basically is a G7x but without the flipscreen and 3 f-stop differences. Also, keep in mind that G9x also costs more than the SX740. Best forte of SX740 vs G9x is that it shoots 4k. Hope I helped.
