As a Canon and Sony shooter, the only shorts I saw was a lack of a high base ISO, SDI and variable ND in the Canon system, but they only came into need in very specific situations. I use the c70 and R5C A/B combo with few compromises in matching and quality. With my FX6 and FX30 combo, there are so many things that are lacking especially in the focus and exposure tools, not to mention sending out those tools to external monitors. Also, something I never had with Canon was the audio RF interference issues that are created by the Sony cameras themselves even when using the Sony UWP-D lavs. I am keeping the Sony cams to match existing footage from out-of-market producers, and shooting some conference work, but I will continue to promote Canon when the client has no camera preference. The C400 does fill in most of those holes, especially for that starting price, but yes, they did take a long time to address some of those issues. I won't be picking one up for at least a couple of years.
@davidmorefield5 ай бұрын
The majority of users are pairing fx6 with fx3, not fx30. That will remove a lot of the hurdles you mention. And at that point, you have the same sensor, same mount… A very complimentary system. Canon makes weird choices sometimes but they do have very usable products. That’s interesting, I have not run into the rf problem as a Sony issue. It was dependent on my mic choice. I had problems when using my c70 and using certain mics. Still had those issues using those mics on my fx6. As I upgraded to the uwp’s, the problems stopped.

I ordered my C400 from B&H. Can't wait for September. I hear all that you say about Canon taking too long. But they are here now. This will kill with my 24-105 2.8. Pumped. Gonna keep one C70 and sell one and my R5c. Should be good for a long time!! I think this will hurt RED most. Those shooters already have RF glass. Internal ND's and 6k will pull some over. You are one of the few ExCanon now Sony shooters that doesn't bad mouth Canon. A lot of them were very vocal about leaving Canon. I don't see the point in burning bridges.
@davidmorefield5 ай бұрын
Im just voicing my frustrations that led me to leaving. I loved the image I had with my c70. And I totally agree, this with the 24-105 2.8 will be a combo that’s hard to beat. I don’t think this will hurt red at all bc these are two different use cases. Reds don’t make their cameras for one man productions (which this would excel at) and I haven’t been in many sets where they say “we are either going to shoot with red or canon”. It’s usually a difference in production level. I could see this being fantastic for doc work as well. I’m glad finally canon came to their senses and released a killer camera.

Canon has a bad track record of keeping up with the competition, but to me the 24-105 f2.8 is a compelling enough reason to switch to Canon, with the added benefit of being able to crop in to S35 for extra range and still delivering at 4K. I'm curious if Sony can make a 6k FX6 II without cannibalizing the Burano like it cannibalized the FX9.

Sony needs to release a 24-105 F2.8 PZ lens, a Mi Shoe to 3.5mm adapter, figure out a lighter codec update for 4K 10 bit, and the FX6 will be near perfect as is for another 2-4 years. Oddly enough, I would be more interested in buying an FX9 II with some tweaks so I can have a true “big” camera, before I am interested an FX6 II with more resolution or something. I like the FX6 as is, just needs a better PZ choice than the original old 28-135 and that’s about it. Now if they wanted to figure out how to marry the two - make an FX8 or something where it’s got all the broadcast I/O needs, and is smaller than an FX9, but slightly bigger than the FX6, priced at $8000, I would be okay with that too. Really still want to see an update to the Sony camcorder lineup with 4K 10 bit and S-Cinetone, but I also went ahead and got the Canon XF605 to fill that camcorder role in the meantime. The hardest part about that so far has been going back to the old ND system. The electronic VND on the FX6 is just so darn good. Anyways, investing in glass is where I’m focused now, and I’m going all in on Sony. Canon lost me years ago and it would be difficult to get me to go back. The C400 isn’t it. Oh, and I thought their demo film looked muddy and dark. Didn’t look anything special to me. The ProAV test footage looked better.

@@davidmorefield By crashing I mean in terms of specs. C400 is interesting, but for me FX6 is still better choice. I wonder if internal RAW recording is now allowed when Nikon bought RED, since GH7 is just doing it :D. So maybe FX6 mk2 will do it to. I guess the only missing things for the original FX6 are: 1) lack of XLR on the body. 2) Lack of 3:2 (I know sensor is 17:9) and anamorphic modes. Other than that it's really complete camera. 3) Not sure shutter angle is already in ver 4.0 or will be added in 5.0. Lack of shutter angle was/is for me very confusing in "cinema cameras". Good thing about C400 is this triple base ISO and the fact that there is 24-105 F2.8 in RF. Other than that, as you said ... 4 years too late :D.

First, before you crap all over EF lenses: These were some of the best available (many still are). Many were developed before digital and therefore have the image circle to cover full frame sensors. I am not saying that RF optics are not good, however optics do not move at the pace of innovation of electronics. A 20 year old (for example, 70-200mm f2.8 zoom) is still totally relevant today. I have a c200 and a c500. Both perform excellently, probably for many years to come. I refuse to lock in losses on perfectly good EF lenses just to chase the shiny new object (EOS R). Most likely I will commit to the ARRI PL mount on the C500 since the really good and interesting glass seems to be largely PL.
@davidmorefield5 ай бұрын
I didn’t crap on ef lenses. I said they are getting outdated. You are proving my point. You are moving on to pl lenses. Leaving behind your ef lineup. Many others are doing the same and they are skipping RF lenses, again… like yourself. Canon is not creating a playful ecosystem like other brands. Too many limitations and delayed releases. It makes other brands more enticing to adopt and invest in.
@its_lori96025 ай бұрын
@@davidmorefield Sorry, David, I think I misstated your point. My point was the EF lenses are in some cases superior to any on the market at this time. Short of being abused many are, and will continue to function well into the future. Certainly if one can make use of EF lenses today there are fine bargains to had. I've dipped into the used market on K*H and bought some nice examples, many in basically new condition. If I was starting again I absolutely would go with the RF system due the advantages (mainly, no mirror, clearly the high-wear part.) I am curious, Is the C400 mount capable of being (semi?) permanently switched to PL? (sans adapters, like the C500?) Anyway my C200 will inherit the EF stuff anyway and I have 3 Canon EOS still bodies for other photography. What I probably won't do is liquidate my EF stuff in favor of RF. The EF lenses work well today, and with careful handling and storage will probably stay so for years beyond my time on this planet.

Also you say the song manages to keep xlrs, but thats not true theyre on the handle which is probably my biggest issue with the fx6 and you can also get the tascam adaptor for the canon if it is an absolute issue. So for me seems a non starter and is just something to say canon has a bad thing here, so if thats it, it has to be a pretty outstanding camera overall! Personally i am all for mini xlrs if they keep size and weight down and stay on the body. I feel if sony had done this it would have been heraled as an amazing feat to bring along a new standard and revolutionise audio in the self shooter space. Say if it had one on the body of the fx3. While the tascam makes it almost moot (you still have to buy an additional device) what's wrong with just buying cables that you need? I am sorry if I am missing something but you can just buy long enough cables and it's not like you have to make a mic go to mini XLR or anything like that.
