I love your videos! I really appreciated you showing off the xa50! Its a shame that when people consider making films and videos they go out and get a dlsr or mirrorless camera, which are great but makes everything look like mush! As a video viewer I want to see the stuff happen around your not just your face with the often interesting background blurred! The camera has a film like softness to it! Great video!

If you use a DSLR or mirrorless camera, you can always stop down the lens if you don't want to blur out the background. But it's up to you. I find camcorders kind of limiting. You can't blur the background with a small sensor unless it is REALLY far back. I say the advantage is with the DSLR or mirrorless camera because you have the option. The XA50 is a middle ground with the 1" type sensor. It's quite well-suited for video if you just want a little bit of cinematic blur without so much focus hunting. (Although that has improved considerably with larger sensors as video autofocus has improved.)

What is the video format you were recording in? Is this the same as the XA60?

MP4 I think. It's been a long time. Yes, this is the previous version of the XA60.

In case you're wondering, this is pretty much almost the same vlog as the previous one in B&W. Just want you to see both the color version and the B&W version by the same camera. Which one do you like better? :)

I definitely like the colored version more, but the black and white one is pretty too! I just feel like this one shows more emotion and… i’m not really sure how to explain it 😅

Just stumbled upon your channel while searching for the Canon XA footage. I gaze upon the XA70 but still had not decided. I'm glad you like very much the XA50 and that made me kind of set my mind on the XA70. I'm currently using the Sony FDR-XA53 but looking for an 1 inch sensor camera. I particular impressed with your consistent style of coloring your footage. They have a classic feel of film camera and the nostalgic to it. Well done..

i did not use a LUT. i color graded with filmconvert. :)

it’s been so long since i edited this one so i can’t remember. i usually try out each one to see which would best suit the look of that particular film. i usually like the vintage look which is warmer and a bit more golden. :)

Actually, probably not. I also film with the Fuji X-T2, Canon G7X Mark II, iPhone ... :)

Thanks Carl. I can't remember for sure but I would say I used the flattest picture profile offered in order to color grade in post using FilmConvert. Hope that helps! So excited for you to try the camera! Congrats!

@@sarahdippity Wow, the outcome is terrific. The sound of the sea is awesome, with almost no noises of the wind -- I thought it was recorded through a shotgun mic. Stunned by this camcorder's internal mic ^_^

Great vlog! I just ordered the xa50 and saw you mentioned you used the flattest picture profile (wdr) and you used film convert to grade it.. did you use a specific film emulation? Or just tweaked it manually?

I did choose a film stock emulation and then further tweaked it but it was so long ago I can't remember which one. I usually scroll through each film sim to see which one would give the footage the look I was looking for. Hope that helps a bit! Congrats on your XA50 Bill. I'm so excited for you!

Hi Sarah, I love your videos. They are beautiful and so engaging. I am also a solo documentary style film maker and currently using a mirrorless camera, various lenses, attachments....ad nauseum. I think I'm ready to go the minimalist path after watching your videos. I have been researching the XA 50 and I think I'm ready to buy now. Do you do any interviews? Any RODE mics would be great, and you don't have to spend a lot of money on it. It depends on your budget. I edit with Premiere Pro. Welcome to the wonderful world of filmmaking!!

That’s a good answer.. I was considering the xf400 when I recently purchased the xa50.. and it did look like the lcd was better on the xf400.. but I think the xa50 is that good of a camera that the extra expense of the xf400 isn’t really worth it.. what’s important to me is how good Is the image.. and it’s hard to tell the difference in the IQ or the 2 cameras..
