You always take a chance eating any kind of fish. Born n raised Kapaa but reside on Oahu now. The main thing I pay attention to is to try to harvest mainly during long stretches of good weather. Back home on Kaua, it doesn’t usually do light rains so there’s always some kind of run off that happens. I’ve eaten fish from some questionable places here on Oahu… not alawai level but not far off if I really think about it lolol. Probably dodged a bullet but all was well. Hard to waste a fish when it dies as you’re trying to dehook it the release it so may as well thank Akua and eat um. Back home, Kole is notorious for ciguatera.. no matter where you catch um. Kole is my Dads favorite fried fish.. way back in the Koloa Sugar Plantation days, the Tatas would always net them and give away. I’m sure the reefs were in better condition in the 1950s-1960s.. like any other fish, you take a chance. The big predators eat the smaller reef fish.. in turn building up the toxin in them as well. Ulua, Omilu ulua, Uku, Kahala, etc. all great eating…still can get ciguatera poisoning. That reef you harvested the Kole from (looks like princeville side?) must’ve just had a algae bloom. Shitty deals…. Glad you guys are well tho. Not too add to it but when I seen u guys go swim up mountain.. I thought to myself.. Ahhh ciguatera and den lepto from the fresh water.. KUTIYAB! 😅

you made a mistake by diving below princeville golf course where tons of chemicals pollute the waters by way of the streams.
@FishNGrillz2 жыл бұрын
Yep definitely learned that the hard way our original idea was to go to the local dive shop to drop off some of Kai's custom Spears and then talk to them about locations but they were closed that day so we just went out on our own to rando place 🤦🏽♂️
@ziggybender91252 жыл бұрын
@@FishNGrillz If you come back to Kauai here's some info. Go far away from where the tourists flock to, they all buy fish food and feed the shallow water fish so no good to eat. Also the Algae on the reef is contaminated if it's near a golf course. Best thing to do is take a small boat or dingy a good ways out and hit deeper drops where you can get the fish that aren't so affected by the tourism.

Next time braddahs gotta go east, west or deep drops. All the chemicals in the water by heavily touristed areas is all cig action. Use to test all my fish back in the day when had kits and almost everything on the north and south in shallower waters had cig. From koles, palanis, kalas, moanas and even uhus would come up positive here and there. After they stopped making tests I would feed my cat some meat and sometimes she wouldn't eat um so I wouldn't eat um. Let me know next time you come Kauai, I show you braddahs one good time 🤙🏾

Did you say Ti. three prong, as in Titanium? I made Titanium pole spears 20 years ago. I still have some, I am a welder and diver in Oregon who worked for ATI that makes Ti. for Boeing. As a hobby I made a bunch of spears and sold some to some dive shops and gave some away. I haven't made any in the last 10 years.
