Wonderful video! We were considering a day trip from London when we are there in May 2025, God willing. Now I don't see how we can miss it!

My old university town. When I lived there I never really appreciated just how great the city is.

same as me, I live this town for about 4 years, but I did not notice those of great story and history.

It is a shame that the "ducking stool" is no longer on the Stour banks outside The Weavers. I realise its history and original purpose, but that is my point in that it is a history of old England and old Canterbury, and shows how far equality has come.

Take a trip to Dover and Walmer Castles, as well Sandwich and Thanet. They are not far fromCanterbury. Thanet has so much history and heritage that is never properly explained.

Welcome back! I was just thinking of you the other day. BTW re Becket, the story goes that the 4 knights were let into the Cathedral at the instruction of Becket himself. Why is a matter of speculation, but they did knock apparently, and instead of taking advice of his fellow worshippers, the Archbishop insisted the doors be opened as it was a public worship service. T S Eliot "Murder in the Cathedral" is read annually on the anniversary, which falls within Christmastide.
@LetsWalkUK3 ай бұрын
Thank you! It's a fascinating story with so much to it, who knows how things truly unfolded on that December day, but as you say the Archbishop himself may have played quite the part in the events...

Splendid to see you back. We were worried you had suffered the terrible “KZbin Burnout”! Canterbury is a fascinating city but the mandatory £17 entry-free to the cathedral (adult) turns the place into a commercial attraction, with the sort of charges theme-parks and zoos levy.
@LetsWalkUK3 ай бұрын
Thank you very much! I'm glad to see you back as well, apologies for the long gap between videos. Indeed the entry is rather pricey, and you need a ticket to get into the rest of the cathedral close too. Still there is plenty to see inside - and it's a place of great significance!

An excellent walk. Btw the site of the shrine, and now where the candle is, isn't where the murder took place. That was in the North transept.

It's declined over the last 6 years sadly. Too many rough one's from London there these days. I hope Frasers take the Debenhams 3 stores as they need to be brought back to life as the current residential and shops scheme still has happened even after closure back in January 2020. Nasons is even worse closing in 2018. The high street is pants these days.
@johnhickman2033Ай бұрын
I completely agree with your comments. I'd say it has declined greatly over these past 10 years. The high street lost its heart when both Debenhams and Nasons closed down. Now it just a shell of its former self. On another note; it's also too student centric, you can see evidence of this in the kind of so-called shops there are in the high street currently.
@gabriellaj.o.6180Ай бұрын
@johnhickman2033 hello I agree its too student centric. The nasons scheme is up for sale for 6m now and debenhams no-one knows what's happening. Now there are too many restaurants and not enough shops and the tsb bank building and before that c and g and midland bank shocking they ripped out the Georgian sash windows for what they have now. It's grade 2 listed building. It's improving since last year but still worse than it was

Tsb is now amorino gelateria

1. i have no idea why anyone would convert FROM Paganism to Christianity 2. why didn't king ethlebert just listen to his wife about Christianity instead of waiting 17 years to be converted by an archbishop or whomever it was? so annoying. thank you.
