So as a psychology major, reading and writing are in different parts of the brain and memory doesn't have a specific area but throughout the entire brain, so technically, Sheldon is right, it is a different part of his memory. I do the same thing like I can read sentences and such but don't ask me for writing a short story.

In Sheldon's defense, writing and reading are different skills to use when talking about language just like listening and speaking are. Listening and reading are both passive skills and take much less effort than speaking and writing which are both active skills.
@AG-yy9zy6 жыл бұрын
Tip: y'all can check out simplified chinese, the ones y'all wrote are mainly traditional chinese, which is tougher to remember and write compared to simplified.. take it for someone who sucks in mandarin 😁 Example: Traditional -【客氣】, Simplified -【客气】

I can read like 75%, but only know how to write like 5%. That's because for reading you just only need to recognize partial of the character and seeing the words in content, you can get much out of it. But writing it down, you have to know every single stroke of the character.

So sad😢! My brother is just like them, maybe even worse, but I can do nothing. Sometimes even natives will have brain farts and forget how to write certain characters. You can't sound it out like English words, so either you know it or you don't. However, nowadays people mostly just type, so if you can select the correct character, you should be ok even if you don't remember exactly how to write something. I'm one of the rare second gen kids that can read and write Mandarin fluently, but I attribute that mostly to the fact that I have a fascination with languages, which led me to explore it far beyond what I learned at Chinese school on the weekends.
