@samchu58904 жыл бұрын
Pok gai is not a cuss word. Pok is Chinese for fall. Gai is street. When you say pok gai. You literally telling someone to fall down on the street. But if you add Sei to it. Sei pok gai is telling them to drop dead on the street.
@legendarypussydestroyer69434 жыл бұрын
@@samchu5890 yeah pok gai literally means "trip on the streets", but it's actually used as "go die". It can be used as a verb "heui pok gai la nei" (you can go die, or just 'fuck off'), or used as a noun with the meaning 'person who deserves to die'. If you add 'sei', 'sei yan' or 'sei lan' before the noun version, you're saying "fucking person who deserve to die".

I would want to learn what I still don't know/understand. There's no way I can develop my Cantonese in my current environment, since I use my primary/native language (Hybrid) and English more than I use Cantonese. My feeling for tones is gone too, I never hear it nor speak it anymore, at least not enough to speak it the way I do English and my native language. The conversation at the end of this video for example, I understood very little of it. So I'm not just talking about profanity.

@SoranPryde Жыл бұрын
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Will_Yun_Lee The VA is Korean-American, so he likely cannot speak Canto at all. Not having him speak Canto also fits his character's narrative. He's an outsider to the whole HK Trial scene having lived in the USA for years and Westernised by it
@rachidmaktar9566 Жыл бұрын
@@SoranPrydeyeah but Shen can understand every single cantonese word so it's weird
@SoranPryde Жыл бұрын
@@rachidmaktar9566 Its actually not uncommon for someone to understand Mandarin or any of the Chinese dialects (like Cantonese), but not be able or be good at speaking it Cantonese especially is a language that is very easy for someone to trip over while speaking, due to having 8 tones (and each of the 8 tones to a phrase can have vastly different meaning). Mandarin is simpler because it only has 4, which is why it was chosen as the official (government) spoken language of Mainland China by the KMT, and maintained in place by the CCP later. So yes its not uncommon for someone to hear a sentence in Mandarin or Cantonese and understand what is going on, but not be able to replicate it in their own speech properly. Which is kind of understandable for a character like Wei Shen who has spent many years in the US and whatever Canto he can speak is likely very rusty due to lack of use and practice.
