@@troysander5731 Heinen's 5 on 5 defense is good if you look at his metrics and he chips in a bit offensively. He's as good or better than O'Connor is right now at hockey. Vinny D is not a good player, but that's the price of doing business. It's all about the first round pick and a nice prospect in Fernstrom. Vinny D they're just eating the contract. Heinen is a plug and play bottom six guy much like OConnor. Pittsburgh is very familiar with Heinen, he played here for several years. He knows the system. Point is Pens aren't trying to gain talented players, they're trying to build for the future. This achieves that. Vancouver got the piece in M. Pet. that they need. It's a win win.

Anyone looking at this whole trade saying that the Canucks won this deal clearly doesn’t understand what it was about. I do like the roster players the Pens gave up over the returning players, but for the Penguins, it wasn’t about the now. With that said, this is so typical of a Rutherford deal. He’s great to have for now, but detrimental for the future. The Penguins over the last 10 years have probably had the least amount of draft picks in the league because Rutherford traded them all. As of right now, they have the most draft picks in the league over the next three years.

Too bad, now you have to settle for a legit 2D to pair with Soucy so Hronek can move back up to his normal pairing and Myers can settle in on the 3rd line and finally take his veteran role without excessive ice time for a guy his age. and some good top to middle 6 forwards who are younger then the guys they're replacing, so we either get long term productive players for the forseeable future, or valuable assets somebody's gonna want for something we want. So basically the real trade was JT Miller for Markus Pettersson and Bransrom for a good looking defensive prospect and as a bonus we got Chytil and O-Connor for Desharnais and Heinen and the NYR pick is a wash as it was never really ours to begin with and really costs us nothing to use it to get a proper top 4 defenseman so we can maybe finally slot Myers in the 3rd line where he can serve us well in his waning years. The big guy has shown flashes of good play, and maybe with sheltered minutes, he can show us more of that and less of the Chaos Giraffe play that costs us penalties and goals that we get mad at him over.
@GreyMatterShades
@GreyMatterShades 7 күн бұрын
Chaos Giraffe!!! 🤣🤣🤣💀 When you break it down that way, I think the Canucks did pretty decent considering the circumstances. They were in an incredibly weak negotiating position considering how clear it was to everyone that we needed to move Miller, and it was basically public that he'd only waive his no-trade clause to go to NYR. My biggest concerns are 1) Can we re-sign Markus Pettersson and Drew O'Connor (if they fit in well with the team) and 2) Can Chytil stay healthy. If the answer to both is yes, we're probably in a better spot than we were going in.

Not a big fan of this trade. The main reason is because we don’t know when that rangers draft pick will be used. I agree with your point that if it’s this year and 14th overall then yeah, trade the pick and get a player to help us win this year. But if that pick is being used next year and the rangers don’t improve and that pick somehow becomes a lottery pick-that’s where I’m worried. I know that’s a lot of ifs and as a GM you can’t really wait around and think like that but as a fan it concerns me. Also, I guess this means Vancouver is a buyer? I would assume that we are keeping Pettersson (the OG) and even boeser even though they’re rumours of his contract negotiations going badly.

We still got our regular first rounder, so this cost us nothing in that regard, but got us a problem gone where he can maybe mend and be the JT we loved on the other coast, and I hope he does, as I still like JT, just wasn't meant to be for him to stay here after last Fall shook things up. But Markus Pettersson is a legit 2D, who can move the puck chip in with decent offence, is a big, but mobile guy who can facilitate the controlled break out, giving us 3/6 d-men who can do that, with the other 3 being pure checkers, which is fine in that ratio. And Pettersson's an upgrade on Branstrom who Tocchett couldn't trust to play his system, and will be a Lotto 649 win compared to Noah "Duh... I gotta chase hits" Juulsen!

WFT?! You call a top 4 defence that the team's been starving for nothing?! Lacking a top 4 defenceman who can play on the left side is what's been the biggest thing costing the team those leads early in the season. Or trading away millions in AAV from players who weren't really doing anything for us nothing?! that's millions in cap space to keep our players who are actually good. Or bring in someone who's just what the team needs. And we got assets we can move for our 2D if Chytil doesn't work out there. Yup, fixing problems sounds like a whole lotta nothing.

We got a cheap centre (who's expiry lines up with Quinn Hughes' UFA) who could possibly play better hockey like Kakko after moving out of NY, we got our third defensemen for the next years (assuming we are re-signing Peterson), dumped two (!!!!!) horrible contracts, and didn't give up major future assets (just Fernstrom and Branny if you count Branny as a "future") while picking up a prospect Dean who will be ready in 25/26. When it concerns the NHL roster, for this trade alone, for this year, Vancouver just got way better. While Heinen is a better finisher than DOC, DOC won’t be nearly as invisible as I remember Heinen being in his previous stint in Pittsburgh. There were times in Pittsburgh when I literally forgot Heinen was on the team. As for MPetterson, he’s worlds better than VD. I think Dubas said it best after the trade regarding both Peterson and O’Conner, “Marcus and Drew have competed day-in and day-out for the organization since the day they arrived. Both players are high-quality people, highly competitive players and zero maintenance for their fellow teammates…”

More Petterssons, More Power! First we got Pettey, then we got D-Petttey, now we got DM-Pettey, the Dungeon Master! Now the Canuck's slot will turn into the Dungeon, nobody wants to go there! EDIT, and what's more, DM-Pettey can move the puck well, giving us 3 d-men who can do that, finally! and he plays good in his own zone, and is big, so he's a Tocchett player to boot, so he'll actually get ice time rather then bench time like Branstrom got.

you missed the most important detail in this deal. Pettersson is a pending UFA on an expiring deal. Did we just pay a 1st for a rental? Just so Alvin/Rutherford could try to fix yet more of their bad signings. Seriously paying a 1st for a rental when we have very few prospects makes no sense. We could have signed him in the summer and still had the first. If we don't have an extension already done this is a horrible trade imo.

You can't simplify the value of a first round pick by saying you can't wait for a 1st round pick to develop. Regardless of if your "cup window" is now or later a 1st round pick has enormous value. Maybe not this year, but if next year the Canucks have their bleep together and it looks like they can push for a cup, that 1st round pick could help acquire a real great trade deadline piece that most cup contenders do at that time. To squander it away for a 4mil player on a 1 year contract because "we can't wait for a 1st rounder to develop" is a total waste in my books.

Yes, getting a better d-core, removing a problem, and getting good future assets and guys who can help now and are attractive trade offers for better players is just so shitty. Every team that wants to tank should try it. Trade away your locker room cancer, acquire moveable assets, flip one of them and some dudes who weren't working out for a guy who fills a huge hole in our lineup (Noah Juulsen can go down now) and some good prospects for the future too, while improving now. The perfect plan to tank and rebuild. Who knows, maybe the Canuck's tank plan will backfire catastrophically and we'll have to settle for another Cup run, and maybe even really stick the place out by actually WINNING the damn thing this time around. Oh the horror!

Dubas, in 1.5 years, has beefed up the Pens draft (2-1st round picks in 2025 AND most likey top 10 picks) also the farm system which goaltender wise is amongst the best with a number of guys knocking on the door at NHL ready. So, this trade Pitt loses Pettersson, ok I get it but he'll receive 6 million per year next year after a new contract, right? The O'Connor piece well, his best year he played 25 games with Crosby so Pens didn't lose much. The Pens receive the 1st, Heinen (better than O'Connor) a big tough defenseman who will play better in Pitt without all the drama of Van, and a prospect who may take 4-5 years still which is totally fine because Pens have a few guys ready now. I believe Pens won!

I'd rather we have 3/6 who can move the puck but are not a liability defensively, and 3/6 who are pure bruisers and checkers who'll turn the Canucks slot into the House of Pain. 3 to break it out, 3 to hurt the other team and stifle them. Getting the asset we really needed desperately for a pick that may or may not be anything makes perfect sense. Since Some of our d-men didn't work out, we've been hurting for a top 4 d-man who can move the puck, and now we got it in Pettersson. the other assets we got are not bad either, we can either use them, or flip them for more. We were never going to get what we really wanted for Miller so this is the best way to do it, get what somebody else wants for Miller and lip it for what we want. The lack of a reliable 2nd pair has been killing the team all season long. The lack of anyone outside the top line who can move the puck up ice and get more controlled break outs has been killing them too, as it leads to too much time trapped in our own zone where bad things are inevitably going to start happening sooner or later, rather then in the other team's zone where good things will be bound to happen if we keep them hemmed in for long enough. So trading a pick means they have confidence in the core that remains to make a push, and in their ability to find a 2C to take the spot before the deadline.

The game was an L, but the trades were nothing but Ws. We got that d hole fille dnow, Juulsen can go to the AHL where he belongs. We got a guy to fill in for Miller until we can do another flip for the 2C we really want, or he can develop into it, who knows, he's young. We got a 22 year old d-man who's a potential future top 4 guy in 3 or 4 years, and can be a straight upgrade on Juulsen even now. And we got a winger who scores about the same as Heinen, but is years younger and can either be developed into a middle 6 guy, or flipped for a middle 6 guy now. We dumped salary from guys who weren't working out. We dumped a major source of distraction and drama. I'd call all those huge wins. I don't know why you'd think those are losses, unless you like having the team fighting among themselves, miserable and hating life and blowing the season, and wasting a generational talent and the best player to ever don a Canucks jersey "wins".

And as for the pick, that was obviously gotten to seal the deal to get Markus Pettersson, a 2D who can move the puck that the Canucks have been looking for since last July, who just wasn't available until now.
