You turned off the comments on your popular vintage Eddy Merckx rebuild. In 1988 I was working at a bicycle shop and I was overhauling the BB on an Eddy Merckx, the adjusting cup was stuck in the frame. The person who built it did not grease the threads enough. It was the destruction of such a beautiful piece of equipment. When assembling a bicycle that is at the apex of technology and price; what limit or level of care should be taken when assembling such a bike? Should all of the components be fully adjustable throughout the service life of the bicycle? Pros have team mechanics and new bikes, but what about people who are going to ride a bike for 20 or 30 years? Is it acceptable for the barrel adjusters on the brakes to quickly corrode and lose adjustability? You were using what we call the open end of a wrench (2 sided grip) rather than the "box" socket end A steel bolt threading into an aluminum component, that is corroded, the aluminum is weaker than steel and is likely to tear away. People have torn the threads out of their crank arms. You should have shown the viewer your use of penetrating oil before disassembly. I noticed the ultrasound bucket in one of your videos. That is really helpful for recovering corroded parts. This is why I like to grease every possible thread on a Campagnolo/Dura Ace bike. So that it can be disabled not destroyed in the future. I have to point out that I work 3k from the ocean and we have mountain bikers who ride through salt water. You used pliers to tighten the screws on the friction shifters - the braze on could have been cleaned with a tap and some grease painted on the threads to prevent corrosion. Back in the 70s it was the industry standard to grease the threads on the caps that cover the crankarm bolts The wedge on a quill stem can become stuck and grease where the wedge touches the aluminum stem and the treads for the bolt is a good idea. Use a 3 pin spanner wrench on the lock ring for the BB. Do not grease the BB spindle/axle, the crank arms will slide too far up the taper. Did you disassemble, clean and lubricate the pivot points on the brakes and derailleurs? We use cyanoacrylate super glue to hold the handlebar tape instead of vinyl electrical tape. It looks cleaner. It might have melted the Benotto tape ? Your assembly met the professional standard for a bicycle industry, but did that Merckx deserve two days of labor to reassemble it? (and would the customer be willing to pay for that?) Note to mechanics: I used a shop vac to remove loose spoke nipples from inside a rim and it worked in less than 60 seconds.
