Those are mule deer in the background. I was shooting 30 grains of FFFg for both because in my revolver it's an accurate charge and it's the max charge that will allow the conical bullet to fit.

Paul, long time fan here, perhaps you recognize my name. I noticed you very slowly lower the gun before each shot. Is this something you do intentionally or instinctively? Judging by your ability to shoot so well, it seems to be an effective technique and it intrigues me. It makes sense, you gently (or naturally) decrease the tension in your shoulders or arms or back, seems much more stable and reliable than say trying to slowly raise the gun as this would require activating/contracting said muscles which I would imagine would lead to much less controlled movement.

I found it interesting that you didn't mention the difference in percussive force applied to the target. I know you mentioned that the foot pounds on target were significantly different, but you didn't mention it after the meat target. The conical projectiles knocked the meat target clean off of the table. Do you suppose that would make a difference, say if you were deer hunting? ..perhaps obliterating a whole lung, instead of just punching a hole through it?

I shoot 200gr LSWCs in my 1911....for target work..... being almost pure lead, they would be really nasty on a "meat target"..... Those 200 grainers do similar velocities to my 200gr Conicals in my Remington percussion revolvers (around 1000fps) and I see no reason for he terminal effect to be significantly different between the two. I'd certainly not feel undergunned with my BP revolvers compared to my 1911, although the Remington only holds six rounds (one or two less than the 1911), but if I have a loaded and capped spare cylinder handy, I can change the cylinders in about 6 or 7 seconds and be ready to go again... slower than a mag change, but in the real world, not that much difference.

@BogeyTheBear3 жыл бұрын
Old Italian repros have a slower twist 'cuz they figured customers were just going to use round ball (if they use a projectile at all-- remember these companies started up to supply reenactors). Then folks graduated to casting conical bullets (modern or historical) and those 1 in 30" twists weren't working. Nowawdays they're 1 in 16 to give conicals better accuracy.

OK, this is something I can relate to! I too have an Old Army, love the thing, and no its not for sale, you will have to talk with my kid when the time comes! I also have done very similar testing in my history with this awesome pistol, and I have found that my pistol seems to favor round balls over the cast conical bullets for paper targets, but when hunting with this pistol, yes I have hunted successfully with it a few times, I do prefer that harder punch that the conical projectiles provide. Thank You Paul for taking the time to do this testing, I am all too familiar with the time consuming task of reloading as well as the mechanical frustrations (darned #10 caps) that come with the territory when you use one of these awesome pistols!

When conical bullets were introduced and used in muzzle-loading RIFLES users noticed significant if not dramatic improvements in accuracy at long range. The fact that such differences are not apparent here is a testament to the inherent differences between pistols and rifles and how they are used.

I think there might be some help to conical vs round balls, but a well fitting patched round ball is plenty accurate. The big change came from a smooth bore compared to a rifle that using mini balls could be loaded as fast as a smooth bore

You are talking my language Paul. I cut some willow in the fall. I just put a load in my cooker and making another batch of powder. When I was young and running my coon dogs, I carried a 36 cal Navy replica cap and ball. I was allowed to carry a reduced load. Good enough to pop a coon in the head and knock them out of a tree. It would not break the hide. Kept me in jeans and boots all year. In those days, $25 for a big hide. Black powder is awesome, pain to clean. Oh well. It works. I knew old timers that carried cap and ball revolvers concealed when they went to town, when I was a kid. Love the video. As always, a very good one.

Traditional conicals often don’t do as much soft tissue damage because their long noses don’t cut through like a RB; Kaido Ojamaa has designed RFN conicals for C&B revolvers, however, that address this issue. I’d love to see a video comparing the traditional conical to Kaido’s. His bullets have found much favor among BP hunters

Superb editing for such an extended shoot. Reading through the chapter on Cap & Ball revolvers in Elmer Keith's book SIXGUNS, Keith had a lot of respect for the older wheel guns. Early in his life he knew a number of men that used those weapons from the previous century. A previous presentation made by Paul six years ago makes for a good primer on the loading and shooting of C & B revolvers; highly recommend it.

Thank you Paul for sticking it out and putting together this video. I had a Navy Arms, 1858 Remington revolver in .44 caliber many years ago and it was the most relaxing and fun way to spend a day out in the field. Hunting jack rabbits with a cap and ball revolver is mostly an exercise in loading and unloading it, but what fun! Take care and thank yo again.

You should try using the Kaido LFN bullet series. They have been used to cleanly take wild boar, deer and even a 2000lb bull that went crazy and dropped each animal cleanly with a single shot out of percussion revolvers.. the Kaido bullets are the pinnacle of conical bullets for percussion guns made today.

Not with a revolver at short distances. At longer ranges, with a rifled barrel, the difference is huge.
@tommylitchfield34503 жыл бұрын
Most likely, the rifling twist was optimized for round balls. There is a big difference in rate of twist for a round ball and an elongated bullet. Like 1 turn in 60 inches vs 1 turn in 24, for instance. The patched round ball needs a really slow rate of twist, or accuracy just disappears. More people shoot round balls, so the gun makers compensate. A 1 in 48 twist or thereabouts is a good compromise for both, but not optimized for either. Hope this helps

I did NOT expect the roundballs to be anything like that accurate, coming from having only shot roundball out of a colt reproduction before. As usual, your pistol shooting is top notch, I wish I could be that consistently good with my 1911. If nothing else, this has definitely made a good show of black powder still being totally capable of darn good performance in the right hands. Wish cleaning after it wasn't quite such a pain.

I’m curious Paul: If you used a black powder rifle, would the conical bullet make a large difference in accuracy? And if you had a more consistent grain (I doubt a few grains makes a large difference) cast conical bullet selection, would it be more accurate or have a better velocity (with a rifle)?
@ironhead20083 жыл бұрын
I suspect it'll depend on the twist rate of the barrel. Faster twist, I suspect Minie balls will work better (they'll also be much faster to load, which is why they replaced round balls in long arms). Slower twist, properly sized round balls will work better I think (much more velocity, but slower to load because you're engraving the rifling on the ball when you ram it down). You don't see much of an accuracy difference in the Ruger because of the shorter distances (which is why round balls hung around longer in pistols).
@bullthrush3 жыл бұрын
1 in 66 barrel = round ball probably most accurate, 1 in 48 barrel = cast bullet, 1 in 28 or faster = sabot with modern bullet.

I learned the difference between "accuracy" and "repeatability" years ago, while trying to get an honest answer from a robot manufacturer. They will hide under a blanket to avoid the term "accuracy". Size of a group is referred to as repeatability. Location on first attempt is known as accuracy. Statistically it's CP , vs CPK. Fortunately they also make vision systems to compensate for a little of both.
