During cap & ball era, and beyond, many utilized paper cartridges that greatly sped reloading process, eliminating need for flask and separate bullet handling. Millions of boxes of paper cartridges were used in Civil War, with the companies often employing child labor to produce them. Several good videos available on this subject. As always great video. BTW I've used surgical gloves and I'm wearing a NIOSH N95 mask while typing this, in my mountain top bunker, nearest person 6 miles away and I'm surrounded by 10,000 rolls of toilet paper. And no, I'm not hoarding, that's a 2 week supply for me since it's quite obvious what I'm so full of.

I should have mentioned paper cartridges...musta forgot. Yes, you seem to be well-prepared for...uh...whatever this is.
@BogeyTheBear
@BogeyTheBear 4 жыл бұрын
I would imagine the variety of paper cartridges would run the full gamut: You have tailed cartridges which serve little more than single-use carry containers (thick-walled paper cartridges where you tore the end open and poured the measure of powder in); to combustible cartridges of powder only (a precursor to today's pellets) to the all-up cartridge with a bullet affixed to the front.

Its perfect timing to put this online, because you can't hardly find a modern gun or ammunition, right now! Just about everyone, including Rex, is panic buying and hoarding supplies. 😷 From food to toilet paper, now its moved to guns and ammo! I guess all those gun haters are suddenly scared some bandittos' 🕵️‍♂️will steal, their hoards of toilet paper? So, learning to shot a black powder gun, may be good to know! 🤠
@ArizonaGhostriders

Yes....trying times, eh?
@BogeyTheBear
@BogeyTheBear 4 жыл бұрын
One quirk about percussion guns in these times is the fact that you can't unload them like you do with cartridge guns. Once you put the powder in and cram a round into the chamber, there's a quick way to unload it again and there is a safe way-- but there is no quick and safe way. If you load up a percussion gun for home defense, the only way to unload it again (without firing it into your back lawn) is to disassemble the gun, remove the nipples on the cylinder, wash the powder out in a bucket of water, then tap the round out with a brass or wooden rod. Both the powder and the lead round are ruined afterwards, so it's best to keep it loaded. But then you have to exercise the extra care knowing you have a loaded gun that can't be emptied without a ruckus.
@BogeyTheBear
@BogeyTheBear 4 жыл бұрын
That's all well and good for the experienced enthusiast. The fellow who thought himself clever when dropping by the local gun store after pulling Dad's old Civil War reenactment kit out of the box and loads up the revolver with live rounds isn't going to think that when he realizes that you can't just pop the unfired ammo out at the end of the day. Pouring the charge out isn't going to get all of it out, especially if you use lubricated wads, so the pail of water still comes into play in order to dissolve the nitrate out and neutralize the residual powder.

@@ArizonaGhostriders Yes, I used to have period photo's that were from a book. I'm 64 now, and that was at least 40 years ago. I too, did re-enacting, and anything you used that could be questionable had to be backed up by period documentation. Can't believe you never seen them. If you research yourself (what re-enactor doesn't?), shouldn't be too difficult. I've passed my books, and gear, on to others long ago. I'm certain though, that it was confederates, possibly raiders. Anyway, here's an example, just like the ones I made myself from my research. www.oldsouthfirearms.com/customrevolvercylinderpouch.aspx Here's an ausie using them: kzbin.info/www/bejne/aZzUdpqfn9p2q5Y If I find the period documentation again, I'll pass it on. BlockadeRunner (store) carries reproduction versions from original patterns for Union forces. www.blockaderunner.com/Catalog/catpg10.htm I don't believe they have anything that isn't verified period. BTW....you would most often find these for "mounted" personel. I believe "issue" was for western Calvary.

Loved the video. My favorite sidearm that I carried for my Confederate Cavalry reenacting was my 1851 Colt Navy. I once held Cole Youngers Starr revolver. I did not like the overall feel of it. To me it was not natural in the hand. The name you were trying to pronounce was pronounced like Shuler with the long "u". Have a great day and stay safe my friend.

I've always understood it to be pronounced "skyler" as there is a Fort Schuyler in New York and it was always pronouced skyler. A Dutch-derived word I think like so many in and around New York.

Santee, buddy, I wanted to thank you for giving me back the BP bug. Some 40 years ago I bought my first repro (Uberti) Remington 1858 which I had for a few years. Then, I went on to other interests. But the confinement had that GOOD side: I discovered your channel and bought myself a Pietta 1851 "Navy" in .44. Not enough, I decided to buy an original whenever I'd have a chance (Ye, right! That what I told mself 40 years ago!) And guess what! This morning, while I was at work, my first original 1860 Colt came in! Yes, it has been used ans abused but hey! It is in better shape that I am. And what's best is that eventhough I live in Quebec (Canada) an original CAN be shot wherever a shotgun is legal to be used. NO need for a transportation permit nor need to be member of a gun club. Now, the belt and holster will follow soon. Once again, thank you for your wonderful work and for lighting back that little flame that was still sleeping inside me. Better not spend too much too quickly on equipment or my wife is gonna hate me for that! Lol ! Jocelyn Savoie (and wife Mélanie Bolduc)

Back then, your second gun was what got you out of trouble. Makes me wonder: was dual-wielding a smart idea? At close ranges and shooting from the hip you're not fussing about with aiming down the sights, but what about horseback? Cavalry troopers issued with a pair of horse pistols-- did they empty one before picking up the second, or did they ride in both guns blazing?
