Listening to Dr. Fraad is like having a very compassionate friend who talks about your secret shame and the hurt you feel every day. Some bad times I've played her over and over because it's not just what she says, which is straight on intellectually, it's the feeling of being understood. She also has the best voice since my Aunt Dorothy. She's just wonderful in every way. Thank you so much, Dr. Fraad.

That humiliation Doctor Fraad mentioned is compounded by the ideology (even among kids) that poorness is YOUR fault. It's a sick way of organizing culture and society. We desperately need to change.

I've got neurodegenerative epilepsy. Just paying for my meds in Idaho cost hundreds of dollars. My son was a toddler. The local bus drivers memorized my stops so they could help me remember where I worked after seizures. I survived working two jobs because I was surrounded by attentive, compassionate, and protective working class people. Colleagues, clinicians, bosses, bus drivers, etc. They were overwhelmed, overworked, and underpaid. But they each researched first aid protocol for seizures. After awhile the team could communicate and spring into action without saying a word or alerting customers. They were so perceptive. Eventually they knew I was glitching before I even felt it. I typically realize that I'm short circuiting because i hear myself speak a disordered sentence or sudden vertigo like airplane turbulence. Exceptionally gifted, intelligent, thoughtful people. But America subjugated and impoverished them instead of cultivating their talents or providing means for upward mobility. Let's replace "in god we trust". A new slogan: "Deaths of despair and relentless destruction of human potential." The authentically heroic individuals I've met lived in poverty. True altruistic generosity seems to die in rich people.

"No private money is allowed in elections..., and they have many parties to choose from" that is lacking in this country and is the main reason why so many people are struggling. We really need to stop shooting ourselves in the foot by supporting the two parties having always favored the wealthy people and corporations for the last several decades.

You have lost the plot: you're living in the past. These kids are impoverished. They are not the ones who need to understand about consumerism. It's the sadistic obscenely wealthy who rule over us, THEY need to understand that their consumeristic GREED model isn't working any more and it's not going to work, ever again, because these children are impoverished, malnourished, and being forced into slums because of the greed of those greedy uber-rich

The problem is no one can believe any of this thanks to Hollywood!!! Brainwashing is hard to overcome, may be some genius psychologists should work on a way to undo it. As for myself, taoist meditation is all I know of, and it works wonders. One has to use any means at disposal to shake off the brain shackIes we've been submitted to since early age, don't we? What matters the most is : does the means serves us to grow as a human being.

An interesting aspect to the significant portion of our population living under such dire circumstances can be its effect on the people who are actually doing well. The reason being they see the despair around them and fear it can happen in their life or to people they care about. This makes them angry and cynical refusing to acknowledge the people who are suffering in a compassionate way due to their own self-centered fear. Even billionaires live in fear. knowing everybody is after them and their money. Society would be doing them a favor if it put a cap on income so once you get to a certain level of income there's no incentive in being greedy. What's an individual "maxes out" on their income they could spend the rest of their life helping others achieve their own financial success.

I wonder what the world would be like if we stopped praising people with money and instead honored and respected well being? We don't even know what wellbeing is. I own only 13 pounds of "stuff" and a little dog and live soooooo well spending only $645 a month for everything... including rent!!! I know I probably spend less on food because I only eat a plant-based diet and i don't drink alcohol. I live in a beautiful city with 36 beaches and all renewable energy and all the water in cleaned before it goes into the ocean. Of course, I won't tell you where I live since I don't want people swarming our city but life is oh sooo beautiful.

Harriet-- With all due respect, why are these people living in an expensive city, why aren't both parents working, why were children had without adequate planning and support? Seems like a case of doing what one wants without anticipating (taking responsibility) for the consequences. Sorry, not sorry. People don't take enough reponsibility in our society.

Many things are better elsewhere than in the US, it's true, but Americans on the left sometimes have a rose-tinted view. Things are getting worse in Europe. Good housing in Portugal? Lisbon has the most expensive rents compared to income in the whole of Europe. Social democracy in Scandinavia and elsewhere has been steadily chipped away over decades by neoliberals. Working hours are increasing. The gig economy is becoming the norm. Retirement ages are rising as average life expectancy is falling. Taxes on the wealthy are going down as taxes on workers and consumers are going up. European economies are worsened by being held to ransom by US power. There are many other examples.
