Marianne Williamson

2 жыл бұрын

Economist and Professor Richard Wolff analyzes the deficiencies of modern capitalism, articulating the benefits of a socialist system and the road to a more equitable society. He promotes not a radical shift in economic system, but a gradual transformation involving a shift in consciousness from profits before people to people above all else.

When you get these history lessons during a discussion, it makes you realize that what people like Bernie and Richard Wolff are really doing is reacquainting us with lost knowledge -- ideas that have been suppressed and made taboo over the decades. We owe them a great debt. And I wish and would encourage Prof Wolff, Marianne, and anyone else with a platform (and in the know) to introduce to us additional others who may share their wisdom. Because as Prof Wolff points out here, we need many to give voice to these ideas.

The biggest take-away, i.e. the most important thing mentioned, was the problem of labels. When you call someone a capitalist or socialist, there's just too much baggage to the labels. Apply these labels to someone and watch the straw man start to form in their minds. The time has come for all of us to look past labels, and look instead at ideas. If we enact and test ideas for our society, we get better as a society.

Yes. It is a problem. It doesn't help if I say that I'm a Marxist if the person I'm talking to have no idea about what Marx said about anything, sans what they hear from the mainstream media. So you have to do it the hard way. Explaining different concepts in detail and why they matter. I find many people are too emotionally invested. You might explain how the profit vs labor works, who is creating the profits and how our economics are outside democratic control. They often agree until you say 'That's what Marx saw as a problem!' then they go totally nuts. I find that many so called capitalists doesn't understand their own position.

Yes, the label is a problem. "Socialist" brings up the image of a bearded, wild-eyed bomb thrower and baby killer. "Capitalist" is an old guy with a monocle, cane, and top hat. Cartoonish but not reality. However, consider Nebraska, the solidly Republican state which twice gave Richard Nixon his greatest percentage victory over JFK. How do you match this political background with the fact that 100% of the generation and distribution of electricity in that state is by the state, in the form of "Public Power Districts" with directors elected on the general ballot? Yes, "socialist'" would be an appropriate truth-in-labeling description of the system, but the term has the smell and kiss of death, thus "Public Power." The fact that a large proportion of the male population has done military service also builds resistance to the idea of state control of anything. When you have had a serving spoon of oatmeal flung onto your metal tray and been told to move on and not delay the line while being truly grateful for what the system has provided, you become more interested in choices. Likewise in medicine. If you first have to convince a gatekeeper in the form of a sergeant or civil servant that you want to be permitted to see a doctor, you begin to question if they have your best interests as their priority. Further forced contact with the Department of Motor Vehicles, zoning boards and the Internal Revenue Service makes one rejoice that these guys are not responsible for the food or fuel supply. Adults of experience can recognize that the entrenched civil servants can be more focused on their own personal interests, their sick leave, annual leave, parental leave, coffee beaks, parking places, seniority, pensions, and hospital plans than the concerns of the citizenry. If they were in charge of a winery they would certainly produce a very sour wine, but they would meet their state quotas, measured in liters, and be promoted. The drinkability of the products would be of minor importance.

I wish you and your country all the best for the future - and by that I mean: please, USA, get down from that ridiculous imaginary exceptionalist pedestal you invented for yourself and join the rest of the world where we try to work together as equals. Libertarian will tell you that this is not capitalism, but I would suggest it is inevitable result of capitalism. One of component of Capitalism is competition and winner take all system. Winners absorb looser and become bigger. Eventually they become big enough to realize that control of government is cheaper and faster then market competition. So, you get oligarchy. You can claim that you can cut off top and regulate, but eventually is will become what it was. Theodor Roosevelt was first cut of top with antimonopoly policies, FDR was second, with 90+% taxes on top. Both attempts fall, antimonopoly laws still on books ignored, Rich pay smaller taxes then working class. You see my point?

I've been in the US for only 3 years and It's been so painful to see what a political system like capitalism has done in the US in recent years. The concept of the American Dream is no longer applicable to Europeans but to people from 3rd world countries. Understandably more Americans follow the "Portuguese dream" these days. Ah, I miss Marianne's events in NY, they had such a special ambiance full of love for every being. In my country education is free too, it's free in most of Europe... It's crazy how I can walk on a beautiful beach in Rockaway in Queens and a nice street in Brooklyn and suddenly there is a neighborhood with loads of garbage everywhere... and it's obvious that everyone there had no access to education. Back home everyone goes to school, no one would dare to throw any garbage on a street, yes people are educated but it creates another problem of not having enough jobs at their intellectual level. Either way, free education still wins. It breaks my heart to see such an obvious gap in different social levels in communities in NY. Tourists don't get to see the real NY... Back home there was no such a thing as a good or bad neighborhood when I was growing up, whereas in NY if you want to live in a clean area with educated people you have to work your ass off to afford the rent. Money over free time.

@@ravanti5780 Capitalism is an oligarchy. It is a concentration of economic power in a few hands. If you think this has anything to do with Adam Smith's notion of a free market, then I'm not sure where you got that idea. Smith warned against the rentier class, as it could create more distortions in the economy than governments do. In his time, the creeping power of the aristocracy was his worry. Nor did he believe the Invisible Hand applied to every market. He believed that in any market where it does work, it must be allowed to work, without interference from government or any private combination of oligarchs. We have the latter, and it has captured the former. Adam Smith would be an improvement.

A beautiful, inspiring and thought provoking discussion. Thanks Marianne and Prof. Wolff. I always give Bernie a hard time for being such a weakling and always snatching defeat from the jaws of victory, but perhaps i'm being unkind - if nothing else, he did elevate the possibility of progressive policy to the national consciousness. Also, now I know why Jeremy Corbyn's Labour Party was uniformly smeared on their last run. That worker coop funding program they envisioned would have been a game changer.

Sanders never had a chance even if it looked like in moments he did. But he did reveal how the political machine works to shut people like him out. And he did raise people‘s awareness. The real revolution will happen outside of representative government. Sadly things will get worse before it gets better. Why do I say that. Here is one example. Even Sanders is obliged to say things which are false for the US empire. For example his criticism of Maduro was unfair and untrue. And Sanders knows it. But he said it out of enormous political pressure. Now ironically Maduro is no longer a viscous dictator, he according to the media „embraced capitalism“. Venezuela was always a capitalist country and Maduro was never a dictator. The entire US political machine is set up to punish leaders foreign and domestic from doing anything remotely „socialistic“. People can start cooperative now and build on it, in any way. And that can happen outside of government. And there will also be political opportunities.

Excellent conversation!!! It feels incumbent on me to add that though yes we have experienced innovation and achievements, much of that came about through exploitation of many, many countries through bribes, threats, election interference and military interventions and support for coups that have caused so much destruction and misery. The other thing is that when I returned to the U.S. in 1984 after over 4 years in Chile, I was appalled at the yuppies and consumerism and total disregard for pollution. I actually thought the middle class was decadent. Now the middle class has been disappearing and we are somewhat approaching what the rest of the world experiences. So, the military industrial complex is now treating U.S. citizens more and more like the way they treat citizens of foreign countries.

I wouldn't say 'much' of that wealth (you also have to be mindful there are two kinds of wealth, 'natural' wealth as distinct from 'social wealth'.), through bribes and corruption, I'd say bribes and corruption is the way capital accumulates itself, gets larger in quantity through conflict. All of that wealth is derived through destruction and misery. The way capitalism breaks societies up is through breaking down the old methods of production of those societies, once you break up the way people have been working for centuries, you break up the community and separate family units dependent on markets for their subsistence is what the old communities become, through crime, murder, robbery, police confrontation, riots, rebellions, drugs, prostitution, gun proliferation, at the street level and they end up like us at the political level where people are enriched when there is a drought or a catastrophe and crisis. Breaking down communal landownership property of old world communities like Afghanistan and much of the world had been working for centuries in the same manner for the production of the necessaries of life and subsistence goes through a massive conversion into private property by means of force, invasions, destabilization, corruption. The US military had been used for this purpose in all wars post WWII. The only difference between ourselves and the exploited masses of the world is our material level of life is higher indicating we are a social paradox relative to the oppressed; we have the productive power but not the will or intelligence to emancipate mankind from the relation of man's exploitation of man, how shallow we have become to abandon such a quest.

Marian Norton: In great majority of the educational systems in America we were never taught critical thinking. We were instead propagandized from a very young age (Kindergarten forward). In the 50's we were constantly propagandized and brainwashed about the so called freedom we have in America. There can be NO FREEDOM IN ANY EMPIRE. I an 78, and was taught a whole barrel full of lies in my early education. I was able to see through that on my own at the time. My parents just wanted me to focus on social acceptance. I simply never accepted the lie of the WONDER OF CAPITALISM. CAPITALISM is simply a word the rich use to hammer profits out of the other classes through the control of the" elected government," We were never beseeched to indulge in critical thinking. Perfectly paired: Marianne's nuts & bolts knowledge-base is far more vast than i'd thought, and she's a superb listener. Professor Wolf is so perfectly articulate and what makes his answers or presentations so effective in registering with such a vast spectrum of people is his built-in teaching structure of "I'm going to tell you my answer and then I'm going to immediately give you tangible explicit examples that illustrate these points". Back to Marianne. There are very few journalists, very few Q & A hosts who can adaptively flow from their originally-prepared Questions and Interview Structure into directions their interviewee may take them, respond meaningfully on-point, whilst still managing the questions she wants her guest to address. We all well know the opposite, for example Brian Stelter types who pretend to listen then mechanically nod their heads with empty pivot words like "Interesting..." before immediately segueing into next sculpted topic-point. Same with Jake Tapper, Jimmy Fallon, Stephanopolous, endless list. Both complement each other which makes the content more interesting and learnable. Kudos to both.

In other words are markets/voluntary exchanges free/open or restricted by force? At one point he asks, "who is actually in charge (parphrased)?" The answer is obvious: it is the folks with guns, the state. Well, that has nothing to do with the freedom of association and exchange. A central bank certainly isn't. He never deals with that fundamental reality. He mentions corporations with never mentioning that corporations are first and foremost a legal creation: they are commercial enterprises that have been granted privileges by the political class that effectively shields them from the 'anarchism' of freed/open markets.

Promotion of the internet among the general population has been shaped by PR advertising and bizzness propaganda of this product of the military industrial complex as liberating and democratizing (thanks to the PC revolution begun Silicon Valley garages, for instance), and with no historical memory of how any communications technologies from telegraph and radio to TV and computers within a capitalist social system have all been subject to corporate state monopolization and control. With a majority of people now getting their 'news' of the world from F*ckbook and having their 'research' rigged by Goolag algorithms, the digital (c)age is the latest locus of lies on behalf of bought and paid for mis/disinformation. None more asleep than the woke. (See the doc "Stare into the Lights, My Pretties".)

Thank you for the engaging and informative interview Ms. Williamson and professor Wolf! Two things I want to mention: 1) employee-owned businesses that you mentioned, professor, sound like natural replacement for current small businesses. I’m afraid all it will do is reshuffle middle class, but won’t touch main wealth distribution channels. Someone, let me know if you see it differently. 2) Even if it’s possible to co-op truly giant business, like Amazon Web Services for example, the quality of products would decline with time because innovation will not be one of the main focuses. It’s not that I think low about skills of regular people, but under Bezos constant innovation is a matter of survival, which will not be the case under employees’ ownership. Thanks.

@tenisalot 2 жыл бұрын
don't know why but you are assuming a very simplistic implementation of Wolff's ideas....no one suggests transforming Amazon into a co-op....it will take a few generations for his ideas to start transforming society...the Azermendi Mondragon worker- directed co-op in Spain, started in '57, now has over 100,000 employees, and very effectively competes with traditional corporations...turns out people who are creative (and haven't been turned into automatons by the workplace) innovate...they don't need financial incentive...your notion reflects disdain for human nature and is typical of the financial elite!

While I wholeheartedly embrace Marianne’s consciousness model, not until she ran for office did I really become familiar with her and recognize how fully she lives her truth. She’s a beautiful role model for anyone who’s discovered the oneness of all - which, by the way, is the critical discovery upon which all else rests. There’s a reason it’s said the highest wisdom we can obtain is to know thyself. Until then, we’ll be operating on the false premise of ego and therefore engaging with the world from the wrong place.

I love this conversation. In my opinion, capitalism isn't the enemy of the good (nor is conservatism although I disagree with overcaution). The enemy is greed and corruption. Democratic socialist capitalist societies refuse to allow corruption (money in politics for example) and refuse greed, via progressive tax regimes with NO loopholes, including taxing inheritance as income, which it is.

EVOLUTION! Ever heard of it? He nailed it in the first 4 minutes re: we better get used to the idea, or rather fact, that we're 'in decline'. That's a polite way to describe 'imploding'. It isn't something new that a tiny minority controlled and owned practically "everything". Look back at Roman times and countless other cultures. The masses never had much, if anything at all. So far the ever greedier owners of this world needed 'numbers', consumers, to "keep the economy growing" and stock holders happy. Can that continue as our population is growing while the planet keeps shrinking androbots are doing the work, eliminating jobs, but the - soon to be jobless - people keep making more people? One doesn't have to be an economist to realize that say: your ship lost power in the middle of the Pacific, but you have enough supplies to get by for a while, hoping to get the ship running again soon. Is it smart then to entertain yourself with games like food-eating-contests? That's how we have behaved for a long time, and sped up the process once the industrial revolution (humanity's savior) got up to speed. What kind of solution can be expected from a species that lives so far in the future, that it trades in soybean and pork futures? We began losing ground since we first decided to no longer live IN balance with our environment, but to manipulate it to serve us. That might have seemed like a good idea then, when the world population was a mere 4 million. Little could we imagine THEN, that today, shy of 8 BILLION people, the system of raping the environment would come to an end. EVOLUTION, in spite of all our scientific achievements, we have completely unlearned to live intelligently. No passing grade for behavior like this :- /

Plus, we paid very little for meals which were healthy, fresh, n delicious. You could be student at any age. There is a saying: communists n capitalists are oppositions n enemy, but they unite in opposing socialism! Why?? Because the control n power of a minority is not the case in socialism. However, names are only part of the systems, within each there can be more of the other isms...in practice. Thank you both for discussing such subjects that are becoming too late to transform n make positive changes...
