Afro-Brazilian art form developed in Brazil, with dance, music, acrobatics, kicks and percussion elements. Salt Lake Capoeira has been teaching kids and adults for over 15 years now, under the leadership of Mestre Jamaika, a world renowned capoeira master, also a resident of Salt Lake City.
Capoeira was developed between the sixteenth and nineteenth centuries by African slaves imported to Brazil during the slave trade. Prohibited from openly practicing forms of self-defense, slaves living on Brazilian plantations disguised their training by incorporating elements of dance, acrobatics, ritual, and music to their practice.
This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at ted.com/tedx

Well done! This is a brilliant piece of choreography. I have watched dance performances my whole life and this was genuine and was a good representation of capoeira despite being presented in a non-intimate setting. Mestre Jamaika is a VERY well respected man in the capoeira world

I have mixed feelings about this. I love capoeira (I practice it since 1999) and I love listening to inspiring speeches of TEDx guests. Somehow for me this simply does not add up.

Overly raw and lacking coordination. Intro so good that promised a great performance - then they didn't deliver... Demos were pretty Ok/good.

I disagree. I feel that any type of community involvement where capoeira is showcased is extremely important for the art, especially when represented by two incredible Brazilian Mestres like in this video.

Like others, I have mixed feelings about this... Integrity of movement was sacrificed for the sake _'art'_ . but in Capoeira, the movement is the art.

Im usually a fan of Ted x Talks and the quality they bring, but this is a miss for me. Integrity of movement was sacrificed for the sake of expression. but in Capoeira, the movement itself _is_ the art.

This is beautiful but it's not capoeira. Capoeira is a martial art, it is played by two people together, facing each other. Expressive and acrobatic movements are used, but not as a solo performance, rather as a way of keeping the game dynamic and being unpredictable. Look up capoeira in the tradition of Mestre Bimba to see what capoeira really is.
