Summary of this video: 1. Humor is a skill that you can learn through practice 2. Humour is a way through which you can connect with other people but starting a conversation 3. It helps you look at the world with a less serious attitude and it can be a great companion no matter where you stand in your life right now 4. The world's not going to fall apart due to your bad jokes, so go ahead and let it out, you surely will get better with practice 5. Humor allows you to vent out your stress, even if you do not want to say anything out loud you could always be funny in your head 6. It all starts with a choice, a choice to be funny to look at the whole wide world with a different lens

Personally I think comedy is the key to anyone’s heart. I used to be that guy in the corner, sad, and didn’t want anything to do with anyone in school. Then I told a joke to someone, they laughed. It felt so good to have someone take notice and have a positive reaction to me. Then I tried it again, and then I realised I had something with comedy and making people laugh. Comedy taught me confidence, and to just try. My saying is life is “If you have something funny to do or say, just do it.”

That's exactly how teaching works. You need a familiar topic, known to everyone and then present a twist to it, something that matches the same pattern but people didn't know about it. What really happens is that we got confused for a moment, trying to make the connections and see the pattern, and when we "get it" - brain gives us cookies, because brain wants us to learn new things. Children learn new things every day, laughing up to 200 times a day. Because they're discovering something new. Jokes teach us a new perspective, and it makes us happy. This is the same reason that will make you smile, because you've learned something new... Wait for it...........

What most teachers aspire to is the ability to be entertaining while they educate. Andrew is trying to educate, while being entertaining and he succeeds. Love the rhythm, it draws us along and while delivery is a matter of taste and not everybody busts a rib listening to John Cleese, the dry, factual way that Andrew delivers his punch lines is powerful yet understated, or perhaps, powerfully understated. This is also a TED talk that is inspirational because if I tech nerd can come up with successful lines, there is hope for all of us. Well done, Andrew

He does not express himself like an average engineer, and I don't say it as an stereotype, but rather as my perception, since I am an engineer and know that engineers tend not to have much humor, or iniciative in general, we just solve problems and talk to a computer all day long. It's pretty cool when people realize that they can improve in certain areas, such as humor and attitude, and just go for it. I think I am one of the few engineers who want to have a different attitude to people and life in general, just like this guy. Well done!

I used to work for a wedding photographer, and I learned that if you take enough pictures (a ton of them, really) then you'll always end up with some great gems. The same thing applies to cracking jokes, at least in my experience. Just let them out, and you will land some great ones even if there are some duds.

One element to being better at humour is being able to see the funny in your own life. This was a non-verbal point that he made throughout his presentation. From showing old photos of himself to listing the famous people he has been told he resembles (can totally see the Justin Timberlake one btw lol), he constantly demonstrated how he uses his own life experiences and peculiarities to generate a laugh. We all have something about us that's funny. It's about opening our eyes to it, owning it and sharing that with others.

Depends on the culture. A lot of it is wit and in some cases people don't respond positively to some jokes. It sounds like I'm restating the obvious, no, I *am* doing so. Humor is often a reflection of how much you understand a person/people's culture. Personally normal jokes don't really work unless they're done in conjunction with the odd random event in life, or in quick back-and-forth banter. Some people laugh easily, some almost never budge. When people don't laugh, we might take it personally or dismiss their culture when it might just be different. It's the humor version of rejection. I don't think it's that people lack a sense of humor, it just doesn't match up with another people's humor. Different strokes for different folks.
@paulhilder72492 жыл бұрын
This is so true. I have worked in a number of different environments, including managing my own IT company and being a London Policeman. In both of those environments, humour was very much a part of everyday life. It was used as a mechanism to cope with the stressful moments that occurred in very different circumstances. I don't remember much of the difficult times in the police but I can recall many of the humorous ones.

I was not just an introverted melancholic depressed girl who loves overthinks stuff. I was not someone who couldn't go out there and being the first who initiated to talk first to stranger. I was not excluded from the society, I was excluded myself from them. I was not rejected. And I was not special, neither I was different. I am just a girl, who still finds out who she is, and willing to learn and explore more about her world. This is such a precious talk. I love it.
