I used it only once and was about to retrieve my ancient grinder from its trip to Goodwill... What MAJOR DESIGN FLAW!! Thank you for saving the day. Since this u-tube video was made 8 years ago, I'm shocked that the manufacturer has neither redesigned this, or added proper burr repositioning to their user manual (and/or a fix).

Your video saved me from buying a new grinder. Many many thanks for explaining this condition. I actually unscrewed the bolt holding the inner burr to see if that would help. Then I said, wait a minute, You Tube and Matthew to the rescue. I should have thought of it as soon as I found that I had put the upper burr in upside down. Again, can't thank you enough.

Thanks for the kindness of putting up this video to help others. I've had this grinder for 8 years, I take the burrs out to brush them off almost every day. Never made the mistake of locking it back in wrong way until this morning. I could have easily cracked the tabs trying to force it back out if I hadn't stopped to check online for a solution. Would hardly seem difficult to design this burr set in such a way as to make it more difficult to put in upside-down, let alone lock it in place upside-down!

I'm stuck in my apartment during the Covid19 quarantine and you've saved my week. I NEVER would have figured out why the top simply would not go on after I'd cleaned the ring and put it back--as I had done many times before. But obviously, I had locked it. Thanks, man. Whoever tested my machine must not have reset the smiley face to the proper position, and when I tried to put the top cone on, it wasn't working. I was sitting around thinking I was an idiot for 30 minutes, until I saw that the smiley face position had to be WAY back. You'd never think that part moved if you didn't know already.

Don't discouraged if you managed to lock your top-burr in rightside up, like me! This sanity-saving procedure works fine in either case. I managed to lock mine today with the top burr in correctly. Turns out that either the edges of the plastic control profile on the hopper, and/or the tab on the locking mechanism, has gradually worn somewhat over tens of thousands of my hasty removals to remove the annoying leftover grounds after each grind. My careless removal today managed to remove the hopper, but just missed contact with the locking tab! MattD certainly deserves a KZbin humanitarian award for saving 25,000+ Capresso users. Thanks again!!

Thank you for showing this fix!!! We probably would have ended up breaking the grinder trying to remove the upside-down piece. It is so easy to put that piece in upside-down - Capresso should make it "idiot proof" so idiots like me don't get the piece jammed in there.

Just brilliant. After I drove my previous Capresso Burr Grinder into the ground (15+ years), I came home with a new one today. Almost identical to the previous. I unpacked it to find out the top burr was factory packed upside down, in a locked position, and had no idea what to do. I luckily found this fix while watching another video about cleaning the blades (everyday? yea, right!) and it was on a side bar feature. Very grateful to find it and for the very quick fix. Matthew, you effing saved my life with this video. I have one day to return my Capresso to Amazon and I really panicked then the top burr got stuck. I love this little grinder, but I need to spend more money and get one that grinds espresso. UPDATE: I decided to keep my Capresso, and months later once again put the stupid burr in upside down. Too easy to do! I hope Capresso works on a fix for this.

Thank so much for the video. I was at wits end trying to figure out how to remove the locked burr. The knife did not correct the problem but putting the hopper back on and turning it as you showed freed up the burr. I had contacted my local SurLaTab store about the problem and the manager suggested going on KZbin. He was familiar with the problem but could not remember what to do. My wife and I have had this Capresso since December1, 2016 and it's the first time we've experienced this problem. We always clean it after each use and really enjoy using this coffee mill. Would purchase another one in the future if required.

I watched this about a year ago and today my Capresso jammed. So I looked it up and thankfully found it. It was exactly what I needed, two seconds with a butter knife instead of taking out the toolbox to take the thing apart! Thank you!

Thanks for posting this! We had a different problem, but the trick with the knife was what we needed. Apparently after taking our unit apart for cleaning, we put the top burr back in place but then somehow things got jammed because of an unground bean somewhere inside. So a jam is possible even if the top burr is not upside down, and your method solved the problem.

That's exactly the issue I had. The top burr was installed correctly, but an unground bean created the locking problem. I'd never have figured out how to solve the problem with the KZbin post. Thanks very much @mdallas!

Thank God for your video I was taking apart the grinder for only the second time to clean it, and burr would not come out. I thought it had broken or had put it back together wrong the first time. I slid the slot back as far as it would go and the burr came right out.

Great explanation. Both concise but has everything relevant that’s needed. For others who are trying this, my housing was pretty stuck before it started sliding. I had to pull a bit harder than it looks like the author needed to in his video for it to start sliding. Probably because I was messing with it and it got a bit jammed.
