I've owned and used this mill for a few years. It works well. Oily beans will result in more ground coffee bean residue accumulating in the mill that requires small, stiff bristle brushes to dislodge. Old tooth brushes work well. This video shows a mill that has been overfilled with the milled coffee having overfilled the receptacle and backed up into the actual mill area. (Ask me how I know!) The mill is powerful and will keep milling away until it's packed the exit from to mill so nothing more can get out. Only probing with stiff bristles or flexible rods will clear the mill exit. Small, stiff spiral bottle brushes work well too. Access to a high pressure airline is useful too! But once cleaned out and sparkling again the Capresso coffee mill will work line new again. I'm happy with ours.

I immediately bought a new larger 1 inch wide pastry brush that brush is basically useless. I clean/swipe the grounds left in grinder down into the hopper channel right into the ground holder every time I brew. I takes 15 seconds and I don't waste any coffee and it's clean for next use. Give the unit a couple pats and tilt it forward so the residual grounds left in the grinder fall right into the grounds holder.

I bought this grinder and was really disapointed at how hard it was to clean, and how much coffee gets waisted. They expect people to do this every day? No thanks... You need to have the coffee been hopper empty before you start as well, as it will not lock the bottom enabling you to lift the beans out with the hopper. The grinder seems like it is good quality, with a strong motor, but the cleaning is real issue. Does anyone have experience with cleaning the Baratz Encore? Thanks for the video. EDIT: I have had this grinder for over a year now, and it is still working great, the cleaning is a chore, so I dont do it very often. The machine really gets dirty if you dont clean it, but the coffee is fine. I probably clean it after about ten 16oz bags of espresso beans, maybe more :) Would recommend this as long as you're not ocd about having a clean grinder. EDIT 2: it is now 2020, and five years after my review. I am happy to say the grinder is still working fine. I had a problem with the mechanical timer for a little while, but I just exercised it a bit by turning it past the setting I use everyday, and it’s working fine now. I recommend this grinder, and will buy another if I find it on sale again. EDIT 3: welcome to 2022, and after 2 years of Covid, the grinder is still working great. I don’t even know the last time I cleaned it, lol. This thing has a great motor, and even the plastic parts still look great. See you in 2-3 years for a follow up, if we are still alive ;) ?

Unless you're grinding it into a powder, it's essentially self-cleaning anyway. The oil from the beans seems to help lube things up too, anytime I clean mine it's noisier for a couple of days. I deep clean mine once a year, it doesn't really necessitate anything beyond that if you're grinding once or twice daily for a pot. I vacuum out behind where the clear finished grounds bin goes about once a month, since grinds seem to accumulate magically there.

I've owned this grinder for over a year and overall I'm pleased with the grinder. It's a little hard to clean but nothing to get fussed about. I'm doing this cleaning for the first time in a year so doing it after every use is silly. I'll probably do it more often going forward as the coffee in there will of course get super stale and colour your brew's taste.
@vr4_955 жыл бұрын
A soft bristle toothbrush works great for cleaning the burrs too. Thanks for the video!
@jaymesguy2395 жыл бұрын
For those below complaining about how hard this looks to clean....try doing the same with a Krups! This looks MUCH easier! It also seems he's using a very fine grind, which gathers up in the burrs more. Just make sure you clean it once a day, you don't have to do it in the morning or just after you make your coffee. Do it later, when you have more time or inclination. You get used to it. The only thing I'm worried about is the amount of coffee wastage. I suppose you could compensate, as you learn how much it delivers. You can also, apparently, remove that little rubber casing surrounding the removable burr and clean it better that way.
@jaymesguy2395 жыл бұрын
I got one of these since my last remark and as far as the 'entry level' electric grinders go, (and I never had the Baratza they love to talk about), the Capresso was the best in terms of grind consistency. It's another one that's not too good for either extreme end, but the coarsest is coarse enough for my Chemex coffee, and is reasonably consistent, so I'm relatively satisfied with the machine.

You definitely don't need to do this every day. I've had mine over a year and use it every morning--and I've cleaned it this thoroughly once. It's actually a great grinder. Also, why not clean the top burr thing in the sink with water vs. all that brushing? Also--have never had a problem with coffee ground going down my disposal--so I do this all over the sink. Also!--he should have mentioned unplugging it at the beginning!! Alway unplug it before you stick your fingers in there with the grinding blades!
@viator228 жыл бұрын
If you're really concerned about coffee flavor, say because you're cupping, you need to remove all the coffee oils since they're spoil and throw off taste. Washing to top burr is a little risky, don't want to expose those to moisture, or at least re-oil the seals with a food grade oil.

I have a friend who's a barista at Starbucks and I asked her about this grinder which I own. She was AGHAST that I never clean it and that all those old grounds just stay in there for days/weeks/months until the next time you use it and some get passed through along with the fresh grounds. The manual for my ~$500 Breville espresso maker says that coffee begins to go rancid after 1hr of brewing. They had a relatively similar figure for freshly ground beans. At first I thought this was all elitist coffee snob nonsense. But after 6 months I can definitely tell when the coffee is hours-old vs when it is fresh. It is like the difference between a drive through McDonald's Premium Roast (which is surprisingly good), vs a typical hotel lounge room or auto dealership waiting room coffee pot that's been sitting there for who knows how many hours, and who knows how many days/months since it's last been cleaned. The bottom line is, I simply spend 5 seconds brushing the bottom of the top burr while I hold it in the air, and 10 seconds brushing the grounds on the yellow floor of the grinder , into the hole nearest yourself. Finally, I lift the grinder in the air and tilt it front-down, and give the back several good firm taps to dislodge any remaining grounds, into the chute. This is one of the easiest parts of my Latte making routine and I get literally 20-40% more grounds!! I can't believe I spent so many years unaware of this!
@ThorMaxx4 жыл бұрын
I have had this grinder for about two years now and it seems to work quite well. If I could recommend one thing it would be to avoid using oily beans inside this grinder as it will quickly jam up the chute. I made that mistake once and only once and boy was it a huge mess.

I picked the model 560 up at a thrift store for $8 and found online that it didn't have its upper plastic burr housing making it worthless. After this video shows how difficult it is to clean with all the build up of powder fine grounds I'm not going to pay over $80 for this product new or even buy the replacement "upper burr" (even if available) because this video told me that burr grinders aren't so coffee dust free. I thought my Krupps blade grinder was difficult to clean and produced more coffee dust but I stand corrected with this video. I'm not going to spend that much time cleaning a device that expensive just to grind coffee. I'll either buy already ground bags of coffee which has been working pretty well with no coffee dust at all or just use my Krupps blade grinder. I may look into a hand crank burr grinder that easily comes apart for thorough cleaning.
@ytyehyeh Жыл бұрын
I'm glad I found this video--it's convinced me to stick with my hand-cranked coffee grinder for my one-cup-a-day coffee habit. With this cleaning process, it looks like I'd end up spending more time using the machine than grinding by hand. And jeez, so much of the grounds get left in the machine unless you empty/clean it and add the dregs to your brewing setup.

To the folks clutching their pearls over 'wasted' grounds, I've used a kitchen scale to measure it, both measuring it directly and comparing the pre-grind beans to what winds up in the little cup. The 'waste' isn't even enough to register on the scale. It looks like a bigger problem than it is.

With a 7/64 hex head wrench you can remove the center spindle (taking care to catch the three springs/bearings under the spindle), remove the entire lower chamber tray and wash all of it with soap and water. Let dry completely, then reverse the procedure to reassemble. The cleaning in the video isn't very thorough and missing a significant amount of grounds under the lower grinding chamber tray.

I bought a Brigii M2 mini vacuum that has an attachment with a brush. On the other end it blows out air and it has an attachment that you can focus the air right where you want it to blow. I take it out on the porch to clean it. Blows everything out in the yard. My biggest problem is getting the hopper to go back on straight. Even though I line up the dots it takes a few tries before it fits right. Plus buy some Urnex Grindz Professional Coffee Grinder Cleaning Tablets.

I've had this same grinder for about 5 years and use it a couple of times a day. I clean it about every 6 months or so. In the time I have owned it I have never seen this quantity of wastage. It looks like they stopped it in the middle of a grind, or maybe they induced that amount of blockage to the down tube to make a point.

I love my Capresso grinder, does exactly what I need it to do, but I would have to say the only downside of this grinder is the amount of coffee that is wasted that doesn't drop into the bucket when grinding. You normally lose as much as a half gram up to 1.5 every grind. I try and give it a few light taps and tilts to remedy this, but it still keeps much of it. The best thing you can do is just clean it every couple of days to minimize the buildup. I normally clean it every weekend. This video has some pretty heavy buildup, I would bet this is after about a months worth of grinding without cleanup.
@larrydunn46265 жыл бұрын
I've cleaned mine twice in ten years... only twice when it got clogged enough in the channel from the grinder to the collector to cause a backup. I use an oily French roast also. So you don't technically have to clean this at all until it starts backing up or you want the collector and bean holder to be clear. To clean the bean holder and collector, had to use almost boiling water, dawn, and a sink dish brush with handle since the bean oil builds up into a thick brown gunk in both the collector, and the bean holder. I wonder if this guy brushes and flosses his teeth between every bite at dinner?

I've had mind for about 10 years, never cleaned it once. Works fine. A few grounds down the sink won't do anything. Why all the worry?
@bobkoure5 жыл бұрын
The worry is that coffee grounds are very BAD for septic systems. OTOH, it might take a lot of coffee grounds to mess up a septic system (like all the coffee you use every day). I dunno, but at our lake house, where we do have a septic system I'm pretty careful about all grounds going into the compost. The last time we had an issue, it was thousands of dollars so IMO not worth taking a chance. Not on a septic system? Eh, who cares what you do with your used grounds. However, they're really good for acid loving plants (rhododendrons, raspberries, blackberries, etc.), so why throw 'em away?
@laurac45769 жыл бұрын
Can you brew the grounds that you clean out if you're cleaning immediately after grinding?
@abtelectronics9 жыл бұрын
Lo C As long as it's freshly cleaned, it should be fine to brew. All of those grounds are the same stuff that would have landed in the ground coffee receptacle anyway, they just didn't get all the way through the machine.

I really liked the grinder,,, until I had to do this. Folgers preground coffee in the three pound can makes this needless. This is a monumental pain. Extremely poor design. Right angles, narrow passages, heat build up if you do more than one a day, too easy to put it in backwards and lock up the whole thing. Static build up. Coffee grounds everywhere. For people who like knitting, you will revel in this one.
