I never managed to right mine, always thinking I was not doing it Wright. Now I can see that is impossible Liked your tip to use the trapeze to get back to the boat. I recently capsized in a windy day and the boat started sailing by it self I had to let go and grab the rear cross beam and by that time I was exhausted for trying to climb back from the front . The water resistance was two much

Yes, when the traveller is out and the jib is in the boat will naturally turn downwind.

Thank you for this vid! Reminds me of being 15 yrs old, sailing with my dad, in Hurricane gulch, Cabrillo Beach YC. We were reaching with spinnaker on a Pacificic Catamaran, and turtled in the harbor entrance (tankers, container vessels, crazy tides. Anyway, we righted the boat by doing most of what you did too. We swam to each corner, un-did the clews on all corners, and stood on the center boards. Fun fun fun. A great experience.. . . .

Awesome video. I had a similar experience in 11kt wind. Gust got me, was falling from windward side and made sure I didn't hit and damage the boom, unfortunately I fell on the carbon daggerboard and broke two ribs. Was able to do almost the exact same righting you demonstrated except no bag. Was able to right my Nacra Infusion by myself with broken ribs hanging out. I stood on daggerboard and lowered myself just above the water for more leverage. Climbed back on same way you did. I noticed the newer boats with tall flat sides will come up and sit with flat side in water with mast tip out of the water. A puff was what got under the mainsail and helped right the boat.

yes, that could work but, the F18 has a lot of rig tension, not sure how i'd get it back on.

@@JoyriderTV you would have to be on the opposite tack for the wind to help give slack...worse case, limp it back to shore

I'm glad that the guy managed to survive, but I wouldn't call the process good-looking. To my mind the very first what is to be made is to disconnect (to open) all the sails so they wouldn't grab water. And for sure you must know in advance if you really have enough weight (either with water bag or not) to right the boat regardless the wind. And I'd also recommend to hook yourself to the righting line to avoid the boat run away upon righting up without you - especially if you haven't got the sails full open like we see in this Video.

Id loose sails and pull a fender in the mast so that the mast remains afloat. And under your catamaran an aluminum tube and when it turns put the tube under 45 degrees where you can climb in you always get it right

@@davebeekvan8125 Just a few days ago I found out that mast of my catamaran (Dart-18) is filled with foam, so for sure it stays floatable because it can't get filled with water. It was a very positive news for me.

So the 10-Euro garden bag with 125 Liter and a plastic ring to keep the mouth open might be the better alternative - only trouble is that it is rather bulky. I could image fastening it on the no-bag side of the spinnaker boom would be a good place where it is out of the way.
@JoyriderTV3 жыл бұрын
yes, i think your had superior weight - mine is good for the 16.

a good tip for getting on a f18 that moves after righting is to go on the windward side, put a foot on the daggerboard under the hull, swing underneath while holding the hull, grab the stay and the trapeze and let your body drag on his back. after that you can swing a feet on the rear beam and pull yourself up with little effort
@JoyriderTV3 жыл бұрын
I'll have to see that manoeuvre.

Great video! I am 15 year old and learning catamaran sailing with the help of your videos. It is really great to learn from you! I have a question about the rudders and the Daggerboards(the plates in the middle that keep the boat stead but I do not know what they are called in English). When you capsized, is there a possibility that if you had moved the daggerboards and the rudders up that the boat could have rightend itself better up? My second question is about positioning the boats trampoline that is on the side of the mast. You stood at the front of the hull to rotate the boat. Why didnt you jumped into the water and moved it by hand? Keep up the great videos!
@JoyriderTV Жыл бұрын
Q 1 - no, that wouldn't make a difference. Q 2 - Usually, by sinking the front it's enough to turn the boat - it's generally too big to swim around unless the wind is very light. I'm glad that the videos are helping. Keep up the cat sailing - maybe when you're 18 you should come and teach at Wildwind!!

I was thought to extend the boards all the way out and walk on them (both crew and helm) to get more leverage. We did not see any failure of the boards in years.

Traveler down on the capsize rigting is really tricky. I had to let go of the dolphin striker one time and let the boat sail past me to grab onto the rudder and jam the boat up into the wind. That traveler out will always point your boat downwind and have it sail away very quickly!

I could imagine that undoing the jib sheet would be the safe way. The self-tacking jib is simply bound to make the boat bear away. I was happy that on my 3 Tiger capsizes at Wildwind this years I made it onto the boat each time - even though the boat was making massive way. I was surprised it was me who got on first, untrained as I am. But 25 years of practice at Wildwind slowly show effect...

People that don't sail downwind under spinnaker often enough find that their upwind mind-muscle memory does them in. I watch guys get overpowered and they want to turn up on the wind and sheet out, which almost guarantees them a swim. You have to do the opposite - sheet in and steer down. And you do go over, may sure the spinnaker isn't cleated or you'll never get the thing back upright. If you can snuff the sail underwater, so much the better. Regardless, that's a lot of boat for a single handed sailor to right, particularly without wind to get under the sail and help out.
