I find it best for me to take baby steps toward something that looks more like a capsule wardrobe than the current mess. My ultimate goal is a more useful closet. As a result of your videos, I've started to limit my buying to the colors that look better on me, and items that work with what is in my closet. Thank you for your videos!

Thank you for "how to know that a capsule may not be right for you". A minimal closet has been my fantasy for years, but with so many contexts (work, celebrations, outdoor activity, cultural wear like sarees and Indian suits, four extreme Canadian seasons) AND my inability to do laundry more than once a week, I know I require more wardrobe options rather than less. The capsule remains a fantasy but who knows, after your series it might get a little closer to reality!

Hi, have you considered mini capsules? I.e. one for work, one for active wear, one for extreme winter etc etc? Of course clothes can cross over categories but it might make a large wardrobe feel more manageable if you have a sense of how much and what you need for each purpose. If you have a large storage area you could even split it up into categories to make getting dressed quicker.

I did this last year when I changed my wardrobe over from fall/winter to spring/summer. I had a mishmash of plastic hangers and when it came time for the seasonal change, I went and bought 2 sets of 25 thin black velvet hangers and told myself all my clothes for the current season had to fit those 50 hangers. I also placed them in my closet backwards', and then when I wore something, after I laundered it and was putting it away, only then could I turn the hanger to face forwards. That way, I could see at the end of the season, anything still facing backwards means it was never worn. I can count 8 hangers in my closet right now that are still facing backwards, which likely means those items are not being reached for and should be donated at the end of the season when I switch over to fall/winter, and will repeat the process. If I buy something new, I have to donate something so that it fits within the 50 hanger limit, and so far, this method is working wonderfully for me! 😊 I have a closet full of all my favourite pieces, some of which will stay through transition to fall/winter, and it looks pretty and orderly with all the nice velvet hangers too!

I've been doing capsule wardrobe 'blocks' (3-4 months at a time) for almost 3 years now ... what I've discovered is that for work, which requires more of a professional appearance, I have invested in the quality basics/pieces, in a consistent palette of navy, charcoal, and black. Where I allow myself to explore and change is with the accent pieces and colors, but I stick to ONE accent color per 'block' - since June, I've been using maroon, for instance, and love it so much that it will continue until December. Because I love fashion, but don't want to invest in anything else but the core pieces/neutrals, I do the rest of my experimental shopping (cuts, trends, colors) at thrift stores. If I really really love something I find in a thrift store, such as this maroon color, only after 6-9 months will I then invest in something quality in that color (two long sleeved knitwear items are on my wishlist for December). I also wanted to say that I went from a very jammed, crammed, 'random' wardrobe of over 350 pieces (including shoes and sports clothing pieces), to my entire wardrobe now being about 90 pieces, including shoes, sports clothing, undergarments, and outerwear. WHAT A RELIEF!!!!!!

You can still technically do capsule. I re-dye, upcycle, bedazzle and sell my clothes to change up my wardrobe. But it is always within a specific number of items at a time.

I really enjoy your practical way of addressing topics. One thing I've noticed with capsule wardrobes (at least where people use an ebook that requires certain looks every season or within the capsule one has decided on)- is how alike everyone looks. I know you can make it "your own" but honestly, they look alike overall ;-). Avoiding that look is important, I think. Also, you look lovely in that rose color and in some color in general- you look fine in black and it is so utilitarian, but it doesn't bring out your beauty like this kind of color- your eyes look amazing too! Thanks.

I'll look forward to that, because I have the same feeling as @auntdj111 and that's what is keeping me from trying! I don't think I have a particularly distinctive style, but I still don't find many people wearing the same cuts and clothes that I wear in my city. Then again, I live 30km away from the Inditex original factory/offices, so people are very trendy here. The last Zara collection is basically what you see in the streets.

yes, exactly. that and it being a bit difficult to find good quality clothing basics (that are not fast Fashion) is whats keeping me from something like this. Though its not an ugly style it seems a bit like a uniform to me.

the first year I did a capsule wardrobe, I felt like a colorless drone - you're right -- it wasn't until I stopped listening to how anyone else did it and ONLY paid attention to what I loved to wear that I began to relax and really find the space to have FUN -- scarves are a big big part of my capsules (I don't count them in the number of pieces I have) ... and because I explore trends and colors via thrifting, I also get to experiment with different cuts, lengths, fabrics ... it's such a blast! and if something doesn't work out, the most I've ever spent on a mistake is $7.99 -- the other thing I just cannot stress enough in terms of MY suggestions is to forget about trying to meet anyone else's standard for how many pieces you have. I did a 35-piece capsule and by halfway through my self-assigned time block, I was in tears every morning - the variety and COLOR I wanted was not there because I wasn't defining it for myself. It's really a process, and it's always morphing and recalibrating -- if it makes me feel BAD then that's useless -- so I just ask 'what would make this breathe again for me' ... I also found that I stopped telling people I was doing a capsule wardrobe -- because then I stopped hearing all the commentary about how it 'should' be done. (smile)

I attended a university where nearly every student uproot themselves & moved to different continents every semester, like Erasmus Mundus. We learned to live out of only two 23kg suitcases (or only one suitcase, depending on your geographical region) for 4+ years, regardless of seasonal changes. Everything we kept, clothing or otherwise, had to be worth the weight in our luggage. I learned so much throughout the years and grew inspired from checking out the suitcases of my classmates. There were some really impressive, extreme capsule wardrobes, 15 pieces or less.

I started with a kind of capsule wardrobe by separating cloths. The ones I am wearing regularly and the ones I believe I would wear regularly are easily accessible. The others are put away in a different wardrobe. After a short time I realized that even from these "regularly" items I'm only using less than a third. Eye-opening experience. My next step - with Justine's help - will be STYLE and COLOR in a capsule wardrobe. Feeling very happy that i found your channel, Justine. Thanks a lot.

I would love to see this too! I started on a capsule wardrobe journey a couple months ago because I moved from a job which was very casual to one in an office. I was mostly working from home so I wore leggings and t-shirts - I had only 1 pair of office-appropriate trousers, some smart shirts, and no jacket. I didn't want to just buy an ugly suit and hate it, so I've been building my capsule slowly by sewing my clothes to exactly my taste and silhouette. I've found the 'Starting from Scratch' series from The Vivienne Files (www.theviviennefiles.com/p/starting-from-scratch_15.html) to be really helpful. I'm using neutrals of olive green and navy, with mustard, chartreuse, and plum as my accents. It's not going to be 100% streamlined as I have other accent-colour shirts that are office-appropriate already, and I'm keeping my party and home clothes separate and un-capsuled - but for the 'what on earth do I wear to the office today' issue I find the business capsule really really helpful.

I would love to start a capsule wardrobe RIGHT NOW. I lost a lot of weight in the last year (about 120 lbs / 55kg) however I still have like 20 lbs to go before I reach my goal. So I need to wait a little bit longer. It's very frustrating. I need to buy new clothes every now and then because my body changes so much (I mean it's good of course! But you know...) because I'm a student I cannot afford buying high quality clothes that I only will then wear for a few months. Therefore I buy inexpensive clothes. And it's frustrating because I would love to go completley fairtrade with my wardrobe. That's the first thing I will do when I finally reach my goal! Thanks for the motivation Justine! You not only inspired me to do a fashion change but also motivated me to lose the last bit of weight! :)

Not a question, but rather a comment. I've been looking into capsule wardrobes for a little while now, and have already culled my closet. No problems on that end :) My thinking comes down to math. I'm in college (again), and in my 30's. The math for me shows that if I get 2 high quality items per semester over the next 7 years I'll have a wonderful wardrobe for when I enter my field! This is taking into account wear and tear. Thought you'd find that interesting!

hey Justine! I just wanna say your channel is so smart, fun, relaxed and respectful. I enjoy it very much, feel inspired and have upgraded some parts of my look already. It seems that clothing industry is a lot about inducing a sense of inadequacy in women, shaming them (us) and pushing to anxiety consumption, so I tended to avoid any involvement with fashion as much as possible. You on the other hand present dressing up as something that easily compliments and improves one's life and somehow make me think that when I age I will just continue having fun with matching colours, shapes and patterns. In this sense I think your content is truly revolutionary and beautifully feminist.

The Capsule Wardrobe is such a good framework for preventing excessive purchases. I can actually put nice looking cloths, shoes and bags down now without buying them because I know I do not need them. I still buy quality items second hand, or the best quality I am willing to pay at fast fashion stores, but I only select the very basic designs that do not go out of fashion easily. I also do not feel the pressure to wear something different every day 'like a fashion model' anymore. Life is much more relaxing this way. Thank you, Justine!

Justine Leconte officiel It was wonderful! It made me see the merchandise in the store in a whole new light. I was able to ask better, more targeted questions about the existing items in my customers' wardrobes, and really zero in on the best fit for the customer. It really helped in terms of not just selling "something" but in helping the customer get what really worked for her. The book did inspire a new merchandise category called the wardrober, which sought to sell a packaged, ready-to-go capsule wardrobe, but knowing the principles behind the capsule wardrobe made it possible for me to move away from the pre made wardrobe bundles and work with my customers to help them make the most of what they already had. It helped me better guide my customers in smart wardrobe planning.

I actually remember that book! Gosh. I really did find it somewhat boring with the high necked bow tie blouses, etc., but I do recall getting (ah, the days when I was young and slim!) a peach colored three piece pantsuit- a thin vest, blazer, and pants (light spring/summer material), and to my surprise, I wore the heck out of that thing! Sometimes, when particularly daring (as again, I was young and slim and though never perky, I was "perkier!"), I would wear the vest alone with the blazer and jeans or the pants (not to work!) .

I don't miss those clothes! That was back when women were moving into new levels in the workplace, and the clothes were basically men's suits, with skirts instead of pants, and endless high necked blouses with bows, the equivalent of men's shirts and ties. The cuts were boxy too.

Seeing all my clothes laid out in my room made me realize how many garments I had accumulated throughout high school, most of which I don't even wear anymore. If you want to go for a capsule wardrobe and still want different styles, why not pick your 2 or 3 styles and go for capsule within each style. Or balancing work-private, go for a work capsule and private capsule wardrobe. It would make the styles and or work/private wardrobe organizing a bit easier too. I like both vintage, mori-girl, and casual ..... I think I could still do a capsule in all 3 and maybe even mix styles ... a vintage blouse would still look good on a modern pair of jeans I think.

It's funny, the thought of 33 pieces is too much for me 😂. I've made small moves towards having clothes in a certain colour palette and items that go with anything in black, grey and white. I've done since it since I returned from the Middle East with not many clothes, and in my late 20's I find myself going for better quality clothes. In truth, I love my autumn/winter capsule wardrobe, I might add a couple of pieces to it this year, but it works great for me. What I struggle with is my spring/summer capsule, and it doesn't help the British weather is so changeable!!! I also struggle with shoes for the summer as well. For the winter, I stick to boots, usually ankle or a bit higher... I'm looking forward to your tips on how to plan a capsule

😍 LOVE LOVE LOVE 😍 capsule is such a great wardrobe hygiene and discipline exercise. Since the collapse of Plaza building where many clothing industry over 1000 workers were killed or mutilated I became disgusted with fast fashion. Also, clothing manufacturing is the second largest pollutant after oil industry. Buying clothing with knowing they will be worn many times and match my own style, skin undertone and other pieces makes shopping easy, fast and healthy to the wallet. Well-made and well-fitted clothing made from natural materials became available even with limited budget.

How about if I WANT to search for quality over quantity but only find some of the staples I'm looking for at fast fashion stores? Mango for instance does great basics (shirts, blouses, dresses etc.) for sometimes the same quality of high-end brands without the price tag... In your opinion, is having some seemingly wellcut staples from fast fashion brands contradictory with the quality that the Capsule Wardrobe concept strives for?
@justineleconte
@justineleconte 7 жыл бұрын
I think that it is contradictory, yes: if you own less pieces and wear them more, you really need them to be of better quality, otherwise they will look old a lot faster - and fast fashion items may look good at the beginning but the fabric, the dye or sewing are cheaper (has to be, to keep up with low production costs)...

If you want to add trendy things and still have a capsule wardrobe, you can do so. I live in Michigan, U.S.A. and we have four seasons, but I simply dress in layers all year long. I also have a job where "smart casual" is dress code, but room for creativity. Therefore, I am able to wear the same things for work and after work. Not including underwear, socks, swimwear (3 pieces) and some leggings for exercise/lounge, I have about 30 pieces of clothing: skirts, pants/jeans, blazers or asymmetric sweaters, tanks or t-shirts. I now only buy clothing to replace and yes, it's usually the fast fashion that gets replaced. However, I do most of my replacements from eBay, resale stores or Poshmark for used clothing in the 1-2 brands I like. I *do* wear all black and sometimes a little gray... but that's just the "goth kid" in me. I accessorize and add color with makeup and sometimes scarves. (I have never been comfortable in bright colors.) I do one load of laundry once a week and dry clean an average of two blazers per 4-6 weeks. It was difficult at first, but now it is something that allows me to not focus on laundry -- a household chore I would rather not do often.

CJ B That sounds like my wardrobe several years ago. Before that I used to wear any color but to save time with laundry and planning/coordinating, I started to buy just black because it seemed 'quiet' and fitted my mood. Then one day, I decided : "y black? Y not another colour?" Then I realised that I have always ALWAYS loved purple and it connected with so many miraculously inexplicable moments in my life! Switching to a purple capsule wardrobe was easy peasy! I just stopped buying black and started buying purple! Purple goes well with black and vice versa! Very exciting change. Very fun.

So say we're ready to declutter and create a capsule wardrobe. How do we go about picking a color palette? I know for me, personally, this is literally one of the hardest parts so I've kind of put off creating a capsule wardrobe. I wear a lot of black, white, and grey, but also like wearing plain colored shirts. For example I have a bright neon pink, a light blue and a lime green and wear at least one every week. How would I style around that to include more than just jeans that will match (business casual work attire)?

There are quizzes you can take online to learn which colors are likely to suit you. Compare/combine those with the colors you already love wearing. I have a 9-color palette. 3 neutrals (white, black, grey), 3 mains (mid-blue, olive, navy), and 3 accent colors (cherry red, mustard yellow/gold, and burgundy). It works for me :)

Know I'll love this series and all of your well-considered ideas! You are charming! I've been trying a "reduced wardrobe" by chosing a small number of my garments each season but stashing others that I'm not quite ready to donate. Chosing one pant sillouette has helped me the most! I recently needed to invest in some new layering pieces for a travel capsule wardrobe and hope these garments will work well for years to come.

I'm in a really tricky situation right now. I generally don't own many clothes, because I've been having trouble with my weight for quite a few years and I always avoided shopping because I never felt comfortable around (and inside :D) clothing shops. I also never plan my clothes, so I've always had few clothes and even fewer possible outfits. Now I want to change that and start getting an actual, wearable wardrobe. It's the perfect time for me, because I'm losing weight, but here's my problem - I'm only halfway through my weight-loss journey, so even if I buy some clothes now, I might not be able to wear them by the end of the year, because they'll be too big. But by then my current clothes will definitely be too bit. And then there's another problem - I'm in a situation where I have to try and save money as much as possible. Plus, I have no idea what my style is. I feel like a capsule wardrobe would be perfect for me, I just have no idea where to start, because I feel like I would have to buy a lot of clothes in a very short amount of time and I don't know if I can afford that. So I honestly have no idea what to do. Any advice?

banichka What about thrift stores? I've started watching channels like 'Thrifters Anonymous' (higly entertaining, those two) a while ago and have since started going to thrift stores myself...which I never even considered doing before. I don't need to for financial reasons, but I've found that I've become far more creative with my style now. I'm more likely to try on something outside my comfort zone there (just for the fun of it) and sometimes end up loving how it looks. And while I agree, that the end of your diet would be a good point to start a capsule wardrobe, if that's what you want longterm (I'm not a fan really 😀), I think now would be the perfect time for you to experiment with different styles and colours.

Well done you! If it helps, for quality and saving money, I can tell you I buy my classic quality clothing second hand. Charity shops are fun to rummage in, some better quality than others. Visit a few and expect to find only a few good items. Dress agencies are great for quality, prices and often have discounts. And vintage shops can be cheaper and great quality, after all, it has lasted long enough to be called vintage. The items I buy new are t-shirts as they are most used so generally not very good secondhand, and luckily not a very expensive item, even when quality, as well will fit you through several size changes. These places also offer a variety of styles under one roof, so it can help you decide what you are drawn to, eg what your style is.

banichka i would advise on thrift/second hand stores, charity shops (the latter are really cheap). I don't know where you live, but here in Europe we have humana, emaus and the red cross, just to name a few i like to go to. ☺ Some thrift stores actually sell clothes by the weight (like 10-15€/kilo). As for style, i would advise on flowy, oversized and streachable (like jersey), that way you don't have to worry about your clothes if your weight fluctuates 😊 (as it tends to do when we diet) Good luck with and let us know how it goes! 😘

banichka, if you are in the U.S., try Rent the Runway and/or Le Tote. Both offer clothing rental. In your case, it might be helpful to get a few basics -- a pair of jeans or dress pants, depending on what you do doing the day, and 1 nice and 1 casual shirt. It's not everything you need, but it will get you by, and you can get new clothes every week or month, your choice. LeTote has different monthly rates based on how many items you choose; between $40-$80/month. I'm using two LeTote subscriptions. One is for 4 items of clothing that I can exchange any time. I usually mail items back every week. The other subscription is 3 items plus 2 accessories that I exchange once a month, for a lower subscription rate. I'm on medical treatment that caused me to gain weight and I just can't bear to buy bigger clothes. So for my monthly picks, I have 2 pairs of ginormous shorts, beige and black, and a summery dress, that I keep all month, while getting new shirts, dresses, other shorts, every week with the other Le Tote subscription. I've actually bought a few pieces. I found my favorite pair of jeans (Lucky Lolita) through LeTote. I don't have a 9-5 job, so I can't justify spending a lot of money on clothes I don't wear every week. Plus, I don't like wearing the same clothes, and LeTote solves that. They allow members to gift FREE totes. You can try LeTote FREE! Yes, free clothes to wear (for a week; not forever). You do have to provide a credit card number because if you don't return the clothes, you have to pay. That creates another perk. Subscribers who buy all of the clothes in a Tote, get the next month subscription free. Here's my code for a FREE Tote. letote.com/free-tote/u/576E1D/default/referrals_page/FreeTote/ Rent the Runway has better quality clothes, designer pieces, and the prices are higher. RTR has monthly subscriptions, or short-term rentals of a few days. If you need a special occasion dress that WOWS the crowd, there's no better place than RTR. I've worn $3k dresses for less than $75.

Hi Justine! Looking forward to this series! In my opinion, all capsule wardrobe videos forget to stress that it is a work in progress, on the longer run. Fast fashion makes us want things fast; we have to learn patience... I have been working on a work and adult woman wardrobe (since the end of my student years ;)) for years now, adding few quality pieces here and there, according to my budget. I certainly cannot keep up with the hauls we see on YT... I certainly "want" more things because we are all lured into thinking we lack things; but objectively I am very happy with what I already have (and much more than say a decade ago because I learned about which style I loved more). Samah Perhaps focus on garments with short shoulder seams. I know I made my ex's cousin look like she had shoulders when she really didn't much! When I feel for my shoulder joint, it is 3.5" - 4" away from my neck. Most people's shoulder joints are away from neck! Her's was 1" away!! I swear it!! She can't sew and asked me to make a straight dress for her. I couldn't make a normal length shoulder seam because all her clothes were droopy at shoulders and she was blaming the tailoring!! So I made her dress according to her tiny shoulder seam. I made sleeves that were big and puffy at shoulders. This was very flattering on her. So maybe it works the other way round too. If u wear garments with short shoulder seams and sleeves that are puffy at top, I think u will b surprised :)

My arms are not fat, but they are very muscular, and my shoulders and chest and back are very wide. (I can readily wear a man's size 40 jacket and it fits just fine except if it has to "break" over my bosom - then it's a no-go.) My hips are too small. So I wear rather baggy shorts and trousers, and full skirts, and my figure is balanced. I think 3/4 length sleeves are the most flattering length - when I am not going sleeveless, I chose 3/4 length sleeves. They are much more flattering than "cap" sleeves or elbow-length sleeves, and more feminine than full-length sleeves (on me, at least).

I live near Chicago. I do two capsules one Spring /Summer which is Navy Blue And White. Fall /Winter which is Black and Taupe. I add color with shoes, scarves, jewelry etc. I love the simplicity especially when traveling.

You just blew my mind with the fact that I can have a capsule wardrobe with 120 items. I do need a work wardrobe that is a bit different from casual wear, and I live somewhere that has at least 3 seasons, so even though I always entertained the idea of a capsule wardrobe, I never imagined I could have goals that I could actually keep. Looking forward to your next videos

I've been trying to create a capsule wardrobe for about a year now, the reason I am taking too long is because I don't want to be drastic and get rid of clothes I'll regret later, at the end of the season I took out all of my cloth and analyze what I really wore and like that season and get rid of the rest, I think by the end of fall I'll have a closet I really like, I think that if you are new to the concept is better to take your time and analyze carefully what we wear and why and don't get attached to things that we don't really use, I've been applying the concept to my whole house not just my closet and I am really happy about it, I can't wait to see the new episodes in your series.

Perfect timing! I'm just starting to go through all my clothes and redo my wardrobe into a capsule! Biggest reason for me is making it easy to choose what to wear. I have too many clothes that dont go together and i have to spend so much time deciding what to wear. Looking forward to this series!

Hi Justine. I started to "monitor" what I tend to go for in my closet and to downsize my wardrobe 10 months ago. It's not easy but defining a colour palette was a game changer for me. I am enjoying styling my clothes more and more, and almost everything seems to match together now. I find that my outfits are more fun and really say something about my personality. i also set some rules that prevent me from falling into old traps. For example, I don't buy black clothes anymore. And I use Pinterest to check if the items I want to buy will match with what I already have. I am very excited about this new series, thank you.

Hi Banichka! First of all congratulations for your journey to your weight loss! Maybe before any purchase you can check everything you own, it is very satisfiying to fit in an old item that used to be too small for you. After that, if you have to buy new clothes, you can choose the less tailored ones, perhaps with some strech fabrics, or/and elastic waist, and more lose shapes rather than skinny ones. They will adapt better to a changing body, I guess. Hope that help!

I answered yes to almost all of the questions. I am starting my first ever "adult" job in September after graduating college a couple of months ago, and it will be a business casual environment. I definitely don't have enough good quality items, so a good capsule wardrobe for work has been on my mind for a super long time. Can't wait for the rest of your video series!

I'm really glad you're doing this series, Justine. I'm moving from a larger appartment into a smaller one with less closet space and taking the opportunity to reduce and refine my wardrobe. I'm not sure it will end up being a real capsule wardrobe because I'm one of those people with very different roles in life but I'm sure I will be able to apply some of the principles.

Hi, Justine. I have been watching for a while, but have never commented. I am really excited for this series. I have been thinking about a capsule for at least a couple of years and haven't worked up the courage. So thank you for this.
