My favorite (honest) method to gauge just how often I wear a garment is to put the hangers on the rod “backwards”. After I wear the item, I return the hanger the “regular” way. After 3 months, I take out all of the backward hangers and evaluate those items. Easy!

Funnily enough, that's how your wardrobe works when you have no extra money. You know you needed jeans, a jacket, two blouses, a sweater, a cardigan etc., and you assemble minimal wardrobe that works. Because you have no spare money to waste on a whim, only planning will get you through.

I buy tee-shirts from Hanes, and wear them underneath cardigans, sweaters, or with a heavier top in the Winter months. I also layer thermals underneath tops with color. For example, a red-pinkish floral thermal top underneath, and topped with a burgundy top. Underwear tee-shirts are more versatile, especially in the winter months. Tops cost more money, so budgeting forced to be more economical.

Hi Justine! Big fan here. I wanted to share what worked for me in terms of style and number of pieces for my capsule wardrobe: instead of 30 items for each of 4 seasons, I did 10 items each for 5 categories: Work, Warm (I move between continents and climates so grouped all warm weather days together), Basics, Cool (ditto for winter+early spring+late autumn) and Event. My Basics capsule has things I wear all year like jeans, Breton striped top, chiffon/silk blouses etc, Work capsule has the suits & formal dresses/trousers, cashmere, I like to keep these two in a minimalist Parisian kind of theme & colours. My cold weather capsule has an English countryside vibe with tweed jacket, sheepskin coat etc while the Warm one is very classic with bright floral sundresses & such. The Event one has beaded, designer etc partywear. This way I have 10x5= 50 pieces instead of 30x4= 120, which means I don't have to put much away & therefore can mix & match more throughout the year= thus never get boredom same clothes or style all season!

I come from one of the Baltic states, and as I was born in Soviet times and much of my childhood and teenage years were spent during the economically hard times after the collapse of USSR, I can tell that I have always had the capsule wardrobe. Only it was driven by absolutely different reason - mainly constant deficite of clothes in the stores and lack of money. However, one thing was the same - to try to look as good as possible in any circumstances. So, it is interesting to see how people from wealthy countries are now learning these skills which I have learned from my mother. And actually since we have joined the EU and the fast fashion brands entered our market I often cought myself willing to do as THEY do meaning shop often without consideration and make impulse purchases, but somehow I still find it difficult, although sometimes I wish I could buy something just for fun (and I actually do, but still the piece usually will have a REAL use). And being in my thirties now I am kinda fascinated to see how our difficult living circumstances have actually made many of us think sustaibable and reasonable also fashionwise.

Good to hear your thoughts, Polina. You have a useful mindset that aligns with Justine's eco-friendly philosopy (and French philosophy) of dress. I hope you are able to get the quality, flattering clothing that you enjoy. Sometimes in the West, despite the impression of abundance, there is a poverty in selection of well made, well designed clothing that lasts. That's partly why I like American consignment shops (and shop in Canada when I can), because the clothing is so well made, with a flattering and stylish cuts.

I am always surprised how 120 pieces is considered a capsule wardrobe. Coming from post soviet country, I always had just a couple of garments and if something got damaged, then I would look for something new. Now that I am not so limited by money, but still 120 seems to be a lot.

@@corkaczarownicy I agree. I think having 30 items you can wear each season is reasonable but many should overlap. I have a year round capsule wardrobe and aim for 30-40 pieces of clothing and shoes. I have semi formal work wear and some seasonal items, but the seasons are not as extreme here as they are in Europe

Amazing! I want to share my wardrobe! I live in Costa Rica. Two seasons, wet and hot. No budget for clothes. Most of my clothes come from gifts and passed-down items, but I'm lucky to have a family with similar shapes and good taste :) Tops: 4 blouses, in bright colors and long sleeves, for sunny days (to avoid sunburns and excess heat). 3 formal shirts in different styles, but the blouses also work for formal wear. Around 7 t-shirts for daily wear or exercise. Over-Tops: 5 light knit sweaters, in neutral colors. 2 big, warm sweaters for cold nights. 2 large rainproof jackets. 3 "formal" jackets (one black, one gray, one brown). Bottoms: 1 blue jeans, 1 dark gray jeans. 2 shorts. 1 sports leggings. About 5 dresses. Shoes: 1 running shoes, 1 sneakers, 1 formal booties. I wear the running shoes daily as I have a problem in my feet. Hope it helps someone!

bonjourJustine, I am a regular viewer of your videos. being a personal stylist and style consultant myself, I very much appreciate your stress on importance of: colouring, body shape and style/personality for one's style. really, these things (knowing oneself) are the core of great style no matter what age or ethnicity, and when one gets to really know what suits her/him, trends (or fads, to put correctly ;)) are not even important any more. thank you for sharing these important facts in your videos!

Hi Justine. I'm 77 yrs. young. I'm having fun following your master plan. I think I'm going to need several notebooks. I've already loaded up my note section in my tablet but the scrolling annoys me because I want to see it all at one glance. Age? Haha. I've always taken pride in my wardrobe, except at home. I call those clothes work clothes because I ruin clothes working in the yard, painting, building, taking care of four cats, my babies. I'm tiny so I'm blessed to be able to wear most anything I choose, but that's soon to change. Haha. I'm also blessed to have, still have a full head of brown hair. Good genes? I don't know. I love the few streaks of silver. But I have wrinkles, tho. Can't have everything can we? Love your videos. They're inspiring and fun. Thank you!

Last season I planned out a capsule wardrobe but didn't actually do it. I realized however that I was missing a long black cardigan, which I found in the meantime. This season (Fall), I decided to actually do it. I'm going for 30 items. Find by breakdown below if anyone is interested: 6 bottoms: 1 black dress, 1 long black skirt, 1 pair of blue jeans, 2 pairs of classic black pants 17 tops: 3 sweaters, 3 fancy sleeveless tops, 7 monochromatic sleeveless tops, 4 pre-combined tops (shirt+cardigan sown together) 7 over-tops: 1 spring jacket, 1 winter jacket, 2 black cardigans, 1 gray cardigan, 1 green cardigan, 1 fancy strappy brown cardigan.

After watching your videos I realized that I've curated a capsule wardrobe without realizing it. I entered into my 30s and had two kids, so a lot of stuff has been donated over the years because my body has changed, I have no money, and I am dressing a little older now. Its been a natural evolution for me. Also, I've realized that I do have certain colors I stick to for the most part. A couple outfits I have don't fit with the other colors in my wardrobe and I think this is why I don't wear them. So now I understand something about myself that I didn't before 😂 thanks, Justine!

Thank you so much for this series! So helpful! I have a suggestion for those who need to add to the wardrobe, take pictures of your items that you have on your phone and create an album you so you can make sure when you go to get the new piece to fit in, you can make sure it's the piece you need and are looking for. This helps me from buying something completely off track and something that doesn't fit with everything else. Looking forward to the rest of the series:)

This video was actually really helpful! Something I like doing is having a designated bag ALWAYS in my room, near my wardrobe (or a basket, or something to put clothes in). There I will put clothes that I'd like to donate (things I'm not wearing that much, old stuff, clothes that people gave me thinking I would wear them). I will go donate once a month if the're anything inside the basket. If I have missed any of those pieces and want to keep it before donating, I will give it a second chance. If not, it goes to the donating bin. That way I make sure I'm not keeping clothes that are too old to wear, clothes that don't fit or things I'm not wearing often. This way you're always aware of what you are actually wearing and what not. Over time, less and less clothes go into the donating bin, and often the clothes I put in there are just old or too small to wear anymore. I rarely put in there clothes I thought I would like but ended up not wearing. Very useful for my case!

Hi Justine! It was a very happy coincidence that you started this series just when I was thinking about planning a capsule wardrobe. This is what I've done so far: I didn't plan with seasons because the weather is either warm or cold in my city without middle terms. So just two piles of clothing. I discarded all the items I didn't use or love, I tried to focus in not to think 'oh, but maybe I'll use it someday' because I just don't,I know it for sure. Now I'm using what I have and deciding if I need more items or not.

Thank you for this series Justine. I'm actually at a place where I hate almost all my clothes and want a wardrobe makeover! This is really going to help me decide, if I actually do need a new wardrobe. I work in an environment where I have to wear full business attire (full business suit actually) three days a week, and business casual twice a week. I'm learning so much, because I realized half my closet does not make any sense to have whatsoever! I also don't like shopping so timeless pieces would be my ideal wardrobe choices. I'm lucky on one aspect though. I live in the tropics, the weather is perfect here! :)

Dilemma: migrating to Europe from a tropical country I've started sorting out my stuff and the concepts of minimalism and capsule wardrobe have helped a bit but I'm still a bit lost. Somehow I need to get rid of clothes that are redundant but now I also need to buy clothes that would help me survive winter. Thanks Justine, your videos are always helpful and informative.

I think you explain this concept really well. I’m leaning on doing my wardrobe this way from now on. It’s quite a challenge, I must say, since I tend to often shop impulsively. But I see that it’s not just about being organized and not being wasteful. I realized that having a capsule wardrobe will save me plenty of time of digging through my clothes and money spent on throw away fashion items. It made me redirect my time and money on more important things. So thank you for sharing this. 🙂

For the last month, I've been taking a long, hard look at the way I dress and the way I shop for clothes. While preparing for a family vacation, I discovered how much minimalist packing appealed to me (a month with 3 bottoms! 4 tops! lightweight luggage!) and I was driven to expand the principles beyond the luggage. My wardrobe was all over the place: I'm mostly a thrift shop shopper and I'd buy anything that caught my eye - without trying it on! - because if it didn't fit, no matter, it cost almost nothing. I also had 2 babies in 3 years and my body shape was all over the place for the last 5 years; there was lots of things too small and lots of things too big among my clothes. It needed a good overhaul. I've watched a lot of your videos lately and this week-end, I did the big purge (with an eye for my skin tone, undertone and body shape; thanks Justine!). I'm down to 114 pieces (including shoes) for 4 seasons. The particularities: - Here the winter takes up much of the year so the ratio warm weather clothes - cold weather clothes is 1/3 -2/3. Also, my summer wardrobe stays out year long because I use many items as underlayer in winter. Aaaand my vests and blazers get lots of use in summer since the a/c at work is so freakin' frigid.- I'm very, very, particular about the feel of fabric against my skin. Everything I kept feels soft or silky. All of my pure wool stuff got the shaft (including my cashmere turtleneck); I only kept a few merino blend that don't feel like wool at all. - I work in an office so most of it (I'd say... 90% ?) is formal wear, and the rest is camping clothes/travel clothes. Of my 9 pants, I only have 1 pair of jeans :-((( I miss jeans. But for the travel clothes, I chose pants in a not too campy style, that I can wear to work (like Icebreaker's Shasta pants, and Mountain Hardwear's black yuma) (does the idea of wicking fabric pants as "formal" wear make the Parisian in you shudder...? I wonder ;-)- I got rid of everything that wrinkle or won't go into the washing machine since I don't have time for hand washing or ironing. Steam cycle is a very good friend.- I have over 10 dresses because I love how hassle free wearing a dress is - no wondering which top, which sweater, which blazer to wear with which pants. This may change as, while skimming my wardrobe, I made a list of outfits. I'm thinking of sticking that list to my wardrobe wall as easy reminder... riding herd on the kids in the morning, I don't have the mental space to think about my outfit so a pre-done kit list would be just the thing. - The only cardigan I kept got relegated to sleepwear... I probably don't know how to shop for/take care of cardigans because all those I owned turned into shapeless rags in under a month. Conclusion: I got rid of more pieces of clothes than I kept. It is so liberating! My objectives for the next year : - buy no more than 5 items (4 already decided, 1 spot left open); - get down to less than a hundred items (the number of dresses will probably get cut in half; I want each piece of clothing staying in my wardrobe to fit with at least two other items)- Travel with carry on only... And for a long week-end in NYC, travel with only a 4L bag, ie: a medium purse (sorry, had to plug some minimalist luggage stuff in here ^^) Phew, that turned into a long post... Et ce sera encore plus long car je tiens absolument à vous dire combien j'apprécie vos vidéos, Justine. Vous êtes réellement sympathique, vous n'avez aucune condescension, vous êtes encourageante et naturelle... J'adore votre style! Merci!

I am not good of thinking of a capsule wardrobe as a whole. I found an example of using five of my favorite items and builing three outfits around each one. This worked so well for me and I found that many of those mini capsules actually fit together when I used my favorite color palette. This way of going about it was so much easier for me than trying to find 1 item that coordinated with my entire capsule.

I always used to be told to buy summer dresses because I will need them. In reality I own one summer dress now, after years of giving them away. I prefer loose pants and tank tops/oversized tees. Or shorts. Capsule wardrobes are so helpful, trying to figure out exactly what you use and what works. There isn't a set style for anyone. :) I also found I love black white and other neutrals, simple look. I appreciate all fashion and others styles but it took a few years to figure out what I like on myself! Your styling videos are perfect, and informative 👌

I discovered your channel yesterday afternoon, and was immediately addicted! Your wonderfully bright, positive, energetic attitude is a delight. I'm always a huge fan of people who make an effort to share their knowledge and expertise. Especially when that individual is Parisian....... Lol! I spent quite some time in Paris in my early 20's. In other European cities too, but Paris was, and is my favorite! I am without a doubt a huge lover of fashion, and over the years, (many year), have developed my own distinct and unique style. I have pieces in my closet that are at least 20 yrs old, classics, extremely well made, and timeless. To say I got my moneys worth out of them, would be an underestimation! I may be wrong, but it seems to me, that I would hard pushed to find clothes of the same quality as those older pieces today, am I imagining this? Thank you so much

Bonjour, Justine! I really love your practical videos. I am in my mid-40s and I feel like I've never learned how to dress. I am a nurse, so I wear scrub uniforms at work. At home, I feel like I never have the right thing to wear. Yet at the same time, I have entirely too many clothes. Thank you for these guidelines. I am thinning my clothes out already, and thinking about what I really need in terms of the way my mother (who knows how to tailor clothes, learning from my aunt, who was a professional tailor in the WWII era) taught me to analyze quality. I love your channel!

I do like your take on the 2 bold colours for each season. I don't quite do that because I love colour, but I have organized my wardrobe into colour categories, with a few pieces that fit in several categories. For example when I was visiting family for a week I packed all my green/pink category with a secondary brown accent.

Hi Justine, You are so organized and details are right on point. I have changed so much on how I look at my wardrobe. I am buying smarter I have more room in my closet. but still have some purging to do. But I am getting there. Who says you can't teach and old dog something knew lol talking about myself I am more than likely your oldest knew friend here. I love the time listening and learning. Now that I am retired it will be easier because causal is what I go for these days very little reason to go dressy. Thank you for sharing your knowledge and expertise, it is so helpful with making life much easier other than the organized chaos I was living in. Now I can look in my closet and see what is there. That a plus. Love and hugs from Shirley see you Sunday

Regarding your point number 5--Add colors you enjoy. For me, I like to add a range of shades and related tones for my accent pieces in my wardrobe. For example, for Fall I have 2nd layer sweaters and jackets in citron, green and turquoise, as well as in apricot, rust and orange, to complement neutral pants in black, brown and indigo (jeans) as well as 1st layer tops in white or beige. I have scarves in these colors too, to accessorize. Yes, I fit this all into my 30 pieces. Friends and strangers alike frequently comment on how good these colors look with my red hair.

In Italy you "technically" have 4 seasons, but the temperatures in spring and autumn vary SO much that you can have winter cold mornings and summer hot afternoons in the same day, so that really sucks.. But I'm moving to Norway in a few months (yay!) and I'm really looking forward to starting a capsule wardrobe. I've never been a compulsive shopper and I don't own many things, but yes, i do have a full closet and i never have anything to wear. I can't wait to sort the things I'll bring with me when moving, and the things I'll get rid of. Fresh start, so so awesome!
