I’ve long had the idea that Cap 3 (being the focus on saving Bucky) could’ve actually spawned the events of a more proper Civil War which would’ve then become Avengers 3. This breakdown let’s the movie be mostly what it is (and keeps the actor appearances under count as well) NICELY done you two.

I do like your ideas for CACW, having the story and arcs tie more to Steve. I have mixed feelings. Patrick H Wilhelm said it best when said that these movies are a lot of fun, and I go to see each one as they come out. But with the power of hindsight, thinking about how they JUST miss the mark by missing out on potential story ideas, plot beats, and character moments, leaves me feeling wanting, even if I an amazing time. In terms of Captain America, I LOVED the first avenger, and it's still one of my favorite MCU films of all time. Winter Soldier was great. But as much fun as Civil War was (and how happy I was for Peter to return to Marvel), I was disappointed at how it felt like Steve was "cheated" out of a solo movie for the sake of another avengers narrative. I would have been satisfied with the quilt demonstrated in this video, but it was not meant to be.

Considering what your ideal "Civil War" was, I think "Falcon and the Winter Soldier" ended up being a better Cap 3 than the ACTUAL Cap 3 in your eyes. LOL HOWEVER, I want to give a counterpoint to your premise that the Civil War we already had doesn't make the Cap trilogy a proper one. While coming full circle in a trilogy is certainly nice, I think another thing a trilogy does is to take the main arc of the character through the other two films and take it to its most extreme. Let me explain: The Captain America trilogy is all about Steve Rogers' relationship to the government and his evolution from blind loyalty to the government to the insurgent he becomes in Civil War. In addition, Steve also has an arc from being ready to sacrifice himself at a moment's notice, to being a little more self-interested (not exactly selfish, but more willing to march to the beat of his own drum.) First Avenger is all about establishing Steve's baseline, showing his strong sense of morality and that he is confident that the government he's fighting for also has that same string sense of morality. We also see that he's willing to die for his countrymen, whether it's by jumping on a grenade or crashing a plane. However, Steve is still just one part of a collective force, the US military. Pretty much ALL of his fellow soldiers are on the same page as him. In Winter Soldier, Steve finds his strong sense of morality (which really is the American Spirit that his Star and striped costume promotes) is in conflict with what SHIELD (the government) is doing with Project Insight. We see that because of this disillusionment, he no longer wishes to stick his neck out for the government like he once did. INSTEAD, he does so with Bucky (an individual) when he allows Bucky to beat him up. Here, Steve is now the leader of one side in a, not even, but pretty sizable split between genuine SHIELD agents and Hydra sleeper agents. It's a smaller group, meaning Steve has to rely more on himself and his own sense of right and wrong in order to guide him through, but he still has powerful people like Nick Fury, Black Widow, and half of SHIELD on his side. Then there's Civil War. Instead of facing an organization or an idea, Steve's main oppositon has a face and a name: Tony Stark. His teammate, someone he's grown to trust. Just like in Winter Soldier, a governmental act conflicts with Steve's sense of morality, which put him and Tony at odds. Then, Bucky remerges again, and Steve makes the choice to go after Bucky to try and help them, even though nearly EVERYONE with power call him a criminal for it, even sending his own former teammates to pursue him. Steve's strong sense of morality tells him that Bucky is innocent and should not be captured like a criminal, he is a victim of HYDRA and should be treated as such. The only people that support him in this endeavor are Clint, Wanda, Sam, and Scott Lang, and even THEN, they get taken off the board after the Airport fight. See, Captain America IS the protagonist of Civil War, it's just that many people see Tony Stark as a co-protaginist, when he's REALLY the primary ANTAGONIST. Think about it, Tony's guilt and fear cause him to sign and play ball with the Sokovia Accords and then he tries to STOP Steve from doing what he believes his right. He represents the opposite ideas that Steve represents. To Steve, Tony has stopped prioritizing doing the right thing above all else. Tony is the antagonist. So, what of Zemo? Well, Zemo is a secondary antagonist. He's a villain that Cap needs to stop, but Tony is hindering Cap's ability to do that, showcasing that Tony has stopped prioritizing over doing the right thing above all else. He's prioritizing being a "good soldier" that will fall in line, over a "good man" that will do the right thing, even when it's unpopular. The "right thing" that Steve is taking a stand on is about Bucky. The Sokovia Accords are kind of like Project Insight, except Steve CAN'T stop the Sokovia Accords. Instead, he has to actively disobey the governments of the world, and the law, to do the right thing, to be a "good man." How far is Steve willing to go to do the right thing? He will fight through ALL the world's governments with just Sharon, Bucky, Sam, Clint, Wanda, and Scott with only six people supporting him. Then, he would also fight against his OWN TEAMMATE and FRIEND, the SON OF HOWARD STARK, to do what he thinks is right, which is saving Bucky from a world that wants him in chains. By the time Cap defeats Tony, Stark makes Steve realize how far he's gone into the realm of the self-interested. Cap's commitment to doing what HE thinks is right, outweighed pretty much EVERYTHING. So, realizing that, he drops the shield, now owning the fact that he can't represent a government that he can't trust anymore. Trilogies don't always have to come full circle. For a character like Steve, the type of character where his beliefs and resolve never change, a story and trilogy can come to a satisfied ending when the main character manages to maintain his strong sense of morality and drive to do the right thing above all else, even when the situations he does them in are COMPLETE OPPOSITES. Steve started out as part of a large collective. His belief in doing the right thing was shared by most of all the people he knew, and he would be willing to die for his country. Now, Steve has been branded a fugitive by his country, his belief in doing what what was right (i.e. protecting a vulnerable Bucky and stopping Zemo) was supported by, at most, six people, and yet Steve still did it anyway. It's easy to do the right thing when it's popular, but Steve's arc shows that he's also willing to do the right thing when it's unpopular. THAT'S what makes the Captain America trilogy a proper trilogy, to me, anyway. TLDR: I think Civil War is a good ending to Cap's trilogy as is, and I went into a long explanation as to why I think that is the case.
@childress50002 жыл бұрын
While I agree with 95% of what you’ve stated, I disagree with the rest of “Team Cap” advocating for Bucky’s innocence as you stated. The only person behind Steve (albeit half-heartedly) who believes that Bucky is a victim is Sam. The only reason Clint, Wanda, & Scott get involved in the story is because of the Hydra supersoldiers subplot. That’s what ultimately spurs Steve & Sam to recruit Clint, who then retrieved Wanda, who then pick up Scott.

What if you looked at First Avenger as a prologue and examined Winter Soldier, Civil War and Infinity War/Endgame as the first, second and third installments of a trilogy, with the Endgame epilogue also serving as an epilogue to Steve's story as a whole? In this prologue, Steve is in his own world, a world that he's accustomed to and which makes sense to him. He rises up and becomes a figure of renown, a hero in his own right who is both respected and admired, until he's tragically pulled from this world. Winter Soldier sees him both having to confront this new world that is so different than his own and also so similar. He sees many values he shares, but also comes into conflict with worldviews that differ from his own, and ultimately he's forced to reconcile and begin to adapt, while at the same time seeking refuge in the remains of his own past and personal ties. Civil War takes those same ideas and pushes them further, almost doubling down on them you might say. Not only do his beliefs bring him into conflict with malevolent powers but also the people he has come to consider friends. He pushes further from the new world and retreats further into his own past. Infinity War serves as a sort of bridge between Civil War and Endgame. Jointly the two films kind of break Steve down before building him back up again. Infinity War sees Steve lose almost every ally he had at the time - Bucky, Sam and T'Challa - who either represented his own past or the values from it that he held onto, leaving him only with Natasha, the person who embodies adaptation, as support. The five years that he spent in the aftermath of Infinity War before Endgame are most important to the overall theme of this arc, which is basically 'coming home from war'. When Steve is pulled from his world, the last thing he's talking about is a dance with Peggy - a date that he never gets. Essentially, he doesn't get to 'come home' from his war, he just takes up the fight again in Avengers 1 and 2, Winter Soldier, Civil War, and Infinity War. It's only when he loses, when the war is lost, that he's able to stop fighting it. And yes, he does fight again in Endgame but it's important to make the distinction that at this point he's not fighting a war. He's not fighting for an ideology or country but rather to stop a single foe, to accomplish a single task. It's essentially one last battle before it's all done, and it's a battle for survival. Finally, Endgame shows him confronting his own past, both literally when he fights a past version of himself and emotionally when he sees Peggy through the large window. This is his final step toward finally being ready to 'come home', and after everything he goes through, this is exactly what he does. When Steve elects to stay in the past he has finally come home from the war and he finally gets his dance with Peggy.

I agree with the points you made, teach. That version would've been VERY watchable, and I would LOVE some context as to what the serum is made of and how it differs from ALL the other variants. That said, the movie we got in Civil War, though it may be jumbled and offtrack at times, to the point where it often gets referred to as an Avengers movie, I think it did do a good job of giving us an improper trilogy. Using two examples you proposed: Cap ripping his star off of his chest, and Cap's blasé stance on his image being destroyed, I think we got both of those moments in the film in the form of Cap leaving his shield behind (though it might've been a cooler scene if he left it without input from Tony), and the various scenes of Cap prioritizing his loyalty to Bucky over his loyalty to his fellow Avengers. Also, piggybacking off of your suggestions with T'Challa, with this idea being stolen from the animated series, in addition to wanting the US to face justice for stealing the herb, they should've also made it a plot point that they stole the vibranium that made Cap's shield (as I don't recall if at any point they ever state HOW they acquired it in the first place). In the animated series, T'Challa steals Cap's shield, claiming it as stolen property of Wakanda, and later gives it back to Cap after proving himself worthy and impressing the king. They could've done the same thing here with your suggestions, teach. Especially if they found a way to tie in B'aast (I think that's how you spell her name), since in your version, the super soldier serum was made using one of the heart-shaped herbs.
@Readus1013 жыл бұрын
The only thing that kept me from going the Vibranium angle instead of the herb, was that it was such a heavy focus in Age of Ultron already. Plus linking the serum instead would have heavier implications to America's actions of things like colonialism, since Cap's existence before and after his deep freeze is more of an Exhibit A than Vibranium is.

@Charlie_Victor73 жыл бұрын
Thank you! This was fantastic. Gave me chills. You guys are brilliant. But if I could make one small addition (ha)... Civil War is the last time that Steve Rogers has the chance to do for Bucky Barnes what he did for Natasha Romanoff in The Winter Soldier, influence him and give him the opportunity to choose to be a hero. Bucky Barnes is getting a starring role in a tv series where we're supposed to believe that he is, but his character development didn't really support that. I think even the MCU recognized that, in giving the shield to Sam and not Bucky in Endgame. So, in Civil War, I feel like there should've been small scenes with Steve and Bucky akin to the scenes with Steve and Natasha in The Winter Soldier, where Steve lays out his philosophy on being a hero, tells Bucky he knows Bucky is still the good man he knew in World War Two (further connecting it to The First Avenger in the process) and letting Bucky realize that Steve is right and choose for himself to, again, follow that kid from Brooklyn who was too dumb not to run away from a fight. As it stands Bucky is dragged around by his ears by the plot and never gets the chance to decide to be a hero, and I think he needed that, and specifically from Steve. Steve was inspired by Bucky the soldier in The First Avenger, and Bucky needs to be inspired by Steve the Captain America to come back around to fighting the good fight.

Although I like what the changes suggested do for Cap; I think they weaken the reasons that Tony’s supporters have to support him. Their support of Iron man doesn’t come across as “wholehearted” to begin with but once you change the reason for fighting a civil war from “You have betrayed your country” to “I’m mad that he killed my mom and dad and you’re still his friends” the support of War Machine and Black Widow (even Vision) would disappear.
@EmethMatthew3 жыл бұрын
Why would they automatically disappear? Isn't supporting a known terrorist and former enemy operative seemingly against all evidence still a valid reason? In fact, I think you could strengthen their reasons without all the fluff about the Accords... Have Natasha be all, "He's Hydra! Didn't we just do this last movie? If he's a good guy now let him come to our side THE RIGHT WAY, like I did..." and have War Machine be all, "He's a dangerous military threat, let the military handle it. You're getting just as emotional about this as Tony, just for the opposite reason, and that's even more unacceptable..." If anything, the Accords just complicate everyone's reasons but making them not just about Winter Soldier/Bucky, but also very personal in regards to being for or against registration. And honestly, registration wouldn't really apply to top secret super agents like Winter Soldier anyway, just the public face super heroes like the Avengers, so making it about the role of covert ops in oppression around the world like the video suggests with T'Challa's and Zemo's arguments are at least more directly related to the issue at hand with Bucky than registration is.

This is definitely an interesting rewrite, but I'd personally miss the Sokovia Accords and the discussion surrounding it, _a lot._ It definitely didn't have a big impact in CA-Civil War, like you said, but I wish it did? It's a really good point of conflict imo, between a man with a guilty conscience looking to make himself accountable in the future, and one who is very much convinced there can be no good "watcher for the watchmen" within a state. I wonder how a Civil War more pulled towards exploring that conflict instead of wrapping up Cap's trilogy would look like 🤔
@Readus1013 жыл бұрын
I feel like if that's the case, then they should instead Civil War to be an Avengers-style event film instead of a solo Cap movie. That way, a proper amount of time and effort could be used to explore the divide the Accords spawn instead of trying to find a way to justify attaching Steve to it other than Bucky.

Yeah, Civil War really was an Avengers film in all but name. They could have done a Cap film focused on Bucky and Zemo, and then had an Avengers film focused on the Sokovia accords and the conflict between Cap and Iron Man.

0:21 I know! Cap become more relevant as time went on.

I'm sorry, but the changing of Zemo to connect to Irskin... It's so Whiplash in Iron Man 2, Sandman in Spider-Man 3, Palpatine in Rise of Skywalker I'm only halfway through the video tho

no Repercussions? if the avengers were all together in infinity war would there have been an endgame?

these Proper Movie trilogy videos are great. part of me wants to do this for the Blade Trilogy, however I do not have a editor or camera :(. but I have a few ideas though. if i shared them with you, would u be willing to talk about them?

I actually did like Civil War. That said, my absolutely least favorite member of the Avengers in both the comics and movies is Iron Man/Tony Stark, so my bias was emphatically indulged by the movie, though I admit that the set up is clunky and nonsensical.

Releasing a film which opens with a Nazi attack on Norwegian soil on the 22nd of July 2011 would have been roughly equivalent to releasing an airplane disaster movie on the 11th of September ten years earlier. I hope you realize that.

I personally don’t think that the third Cap movie should have been Civil War. Zemo is good, and the focus around protecting Bucky is good, but something about making the Civil War concept a blatantly Cap-centric story doesn’t sit right with me.

So this version of Zemo's motivation is basically the same as Vanko's in Iron Man 2? Got it.
@Readus1013 жыл бұрын
Only Zemo will be more involved, unlike Vanko. So he's immediately better. 👍🏾

I'd love to see your take on Thor
@ryanmcawesome17383 жыл бұрын
This is pretty cool, but doesn't it effectively just make Zemo's story and motivation the same as Vanko's motivation in Ironman 2?
@Readus1013 жыл бұрын
It is and it does. But considering Vanko is contained by Hammer after his first fight up until his final fight with Iron Man and War Machine, Zemo's involvement is more involved over the course of the movie in comparison.

Omg YES with the super soldier serum being bootlegged from the heart shaped herb/ vibranium. That's been a fan theory of mine for years now.

I'm not into it. I think this takes away the more interesting aspect the character of Zemo has, to me, and makes a reskin of Whiplash. A product that an ancestor developed being taken, and then that ancestor being punished, leading to their descendant trying to destroy the protagonists legacy. I think it takes off the uniqueness of Zemo as a villain. I like some the background additions. But I don't prefer this. I also think it opens up the idea that Cap may have had rose colored glasses about america, but I don't think he has, as far as developed in the movies. I think he's maintained an attitude of doing what he thinks is right, whether it aligns with the orders he's given or not. Why would he rip the star off now after that? Wouldn't he keep as a symbolic gesture of wanting to represent what america should be, as opposed to what it does? I also think this makes a lot of the characters seem not reasonable. Hunting down Bucky, without the sokovia accords, why would they? Tony, maybe Rhodey and maybe Vision. But the others? "Oh sure, golly gee mr stark, let me help you imprison a man for crimes he was brainwashed to commit." Why would Natasha side with that, with her history? And why would Vision and Rhodey support Tony in what is essentially a vengeance mission? I think this also all takes away the ideological divide in the movie between the characters, and I think it minimizes the civil war aspects. Where's Tony at the end? What does he have to do with what happens? I also think this can lead to frontloading Black Panther's movie. Where there you'd have to not only have the plot of the movie, but also his dad's death. And it retcons Wanda's place with the avengers at the end of AOU.

Idk how I feel about this, I didn't finish the video but in my head it's like who cares if it's a trilogy it's awesome. AM I crazy?

ugh, i love this. now fix endgame! (jk, jk, but seriously. idk if you've talked about it yet, since i don't have time to look through your previous videos right now, but endgame made me mad and this video makes me think you'd know exactly how to fix steve's arc in endgame.)

Having a hard time getting on board with this video at all. Sorry, but Captain America is absolutely the focus of Civil War. Not sure what movie you were watching.

This feels like a worse idea that disregards Steve's arc for the idea of tying it to the first movie

"No matter what the politicians, the press or the mob says, you should do whatever you think it's the right thing"? Kinda makes Cap sounds like a 'benevolent' dictator.

personally i think the civil war movie is better then that dreaded civil war 2 storyline but i think the civil war comic and mua 2 are better then the civil war movie because mark millar is way better then brian michael bendis and mua2 was a better civil war adaptation and thankfully way better then the original civil war comic
