My two PASSIONS - Catholicism and Superheroes! I literally teared up when you got to Captain America. This is the best, deeply theological examination of our Faith using modern, everyday examples that I've ever heard and borders on what Jesus did with parables. I can't thank you enough for this amazing homily... Right when I needed it most... At the start of this Lent 2016. God bless!

Peter Parker/Spider-Man is a great example. He is changed from within & made a better version of himself by accepting an external force. With great power must come great responsibility. Peter still struggles to take the gift (grace) he was given & apply it best to help others. However, just because he has this gift doesn't mean Peter doesn't continue to struggle in his relationships with women, with work, with paying his bills or keeping Aunt May safe.

When I was collecting comic books, Cap was one of my unspoken favorites - I admired his righteousness and never-say-die attitude. While many other Marvel characters eventually made a decision or acted in a manner that was morally wrong or ambiguous, I always saw Cap do the right thing. I was especially touched by his reflection on the value of life after Machinesmith revealed that he had duped Cap into helping him commit suicide in "Captain America" volume 1 issue 249. (Machinesmith survived Cap's attack and apparently gave up on committing suicide and resumed his criminal career.)

Captain america is protestant but he is a great example of a good Christian. He go to the church, he respect his chastity and never sleep with any woman. He develop his virtues to the best. My favourite hero is Daredevil, he is catholic. He has a lot of wounds and he heal all his wounds. Devoted Catholic that go to reconciliation because we are not perfect. Everyone knows that Daredevil is Matt Murdock and he does not have secrets. He is the new batman. Catholicism shows how we you go down, continue, recovery and being with God. By the way, the alter-ego of Clark Ken is Superman.

Father Mike, look into Marvel's Daredevil character. In the comic book he is actually Catholic and struggles constantly with having to protect the city but hurting those he is protecting against; there is an actual priest character which Daredevil consistently goes to for confession. His Actual sanctuary, hide out, is a Catholic church in Hell's kitchen, NY. Actually, i personally feel that the writers for the Daredevil Netflix series did a great job incorporating the church and the character's struggles with his Catholic faith. Season 2 actually amplifies the moral strufgle when he is confronted with his antagonist, the Punisher, who just wants to blow everyone away. Please check it out. It is truly a great, moral Character and awesome story

Thank you Fr. Mike I see what you are saying about Captain America and he actually is one of my favorites in the Marvel Universe. But I find that each hero has elements of Christ rather than one being the best representation of Christ. In Avengers 1, I thought that at the end it was Iron Man that exemplified Christ on the Cross when he was flying into the portal to launch the rocket into outter space. For me that reminded me of Christ giving his last breath on the cross....giving his all. I think Steve Rogers has valor and loyalty, but I don't know if he is the necessary the best Christian. I'm thinking that he is probably the best model of what an American Soldier should be (give me liberty or give me death). My argument; furthermore, to this would be the fact that Steve Rogers likes to fight physically. And in many cases, Captain Rogers says "we fight (literally not just spiritually)." If Steve Rogers was a good Christian he would literally lay down his shield and turn the other cheek. In this sense, I think Superman has the best model of "If you live by the sword, you shall die by the sword"; if you notice in most Superman comics, he doesn't throw the first punch or kick or laser beams. Superman stands there and acts as a barrier rather than an attacker. He subdues the opponent rather than pummeling the opponent. And he literally takes hits from that of Darkseid and Doomsday. I think Green Lantern exercises the Thomastic virtue of the "will" where Hal Jordan strength is based on his will power to keep focus or in a sense to "to keep the faith" or "to hold on." What I do find very Christian for the Justice League is that there is an underlying rule: "we do not kill" These are my thoughts. Your video Fr. Mike got me super excited as I am a fan of the Marvel and DC comics.

I would argue that, when Batman's written well, he's not as heretical. Batman is a broken but virtuous man. He has rules he follows, but it's not just Batman's own will that he pulled himself up by. First of all, it's the gifts he was born with (his money, his intelligence, and the people who care about him), as well as other people whom he guides. In a way, Batman's a lot like Peter, because he denies the good in a lot of ways, but in the end he's one of the greatest heroes.
