This is the sequel to The Rocketeer that we will never get from Disney, it certainly comes closer to the pulp adventure genre than every other MCU flick. Joe Johnston always had a penchant for films with that old time adventure quality, under a better regime he would have been the go-director for Star Wars and Indiana Jones.
@Peer165
@Peer165 2 жыл бұрын
I don't know about that. He did make that trainwreck called Jurassic Park III.
@oscarstainton
@oscarstainton 2 жыл бұрын
@@Peer165 Even though Jurassic Park III is my least favourite of the series, Johnston’s direction is hits a enough of the Spielbegian notes decently enough, even with the weak story and changes that rubbed me the wrong way. There weren’t many journeyman directors at the time who could have managed the same film, especially after such a messy pre-production. Ultimately, his films outside of JP3 and a few exceptions tend to be solid as far as big studio films go.

There will be a remake of the Rocketeer . .but with a progressive twist, so , yeah not close to the pulp adventure genre and neither was John Carter of Mars (also Disney)
@oscarstainton
@oscarstainton 2 жыл бұрын
@@SuperOmnicronsj44 I felt that John Carter of Mars (to give its proper name) was at least a decent swing at pulp science fiction adventure, even if the same material partly inspired Star Wars and made it’s age more apparent. Goodness knows it wasn’t affected by the current PC mindset at Disney, and I wish that it had been the space opera saga for them to bank off of, NOT the Star Wars Sequel Trilogy.

@Skeletor can I just add that Zimmer's score really got on my tits and wouldn't get off them in Rises - its constant 'escalatory' motif.... Dededededededededededededede...just felt way too much. Like being clattered over the head by him while he leans in every few minutes and shouts "the stakes are getting higher and higher... Right?!?!" That, and the ridiculous notion of the street battle between cops and robbers. Just so silly. The cops were in fine shape after being trapped underground all that time - but given they all emerged clean-shaven and fresh, perhaps they had a breakfast bar, a barbers and a gym down there. Who knows - I certainly don't think Nolan did

This was my favorite of the origin films (sans Avengers). My friends thought it was too safe and restrained in the action, relying too much on “classic” fight styles, which I understood (and I too feel the problem regarding the montage), but the story of Steve, a “good man”, has been consistent since this film, and the pay off with Endgame was worth it all. I also agree the Cap films have been the most consistent in quality.

Critics should never lower a films score because it had a 3D option. That has nothing to do with the film itself, the story, the characters, the effects, none of it. Score the move based on the movie, not on what the distributor does to make more money. That's not the fault of the film. If you want to add something in the review about the 3D conversion, whether it adds anything to the film or is awful, that's fine, but I don't agree with lowering the score because of it.

I could see a whole TV show about Cap’s time in WW2. Maybe with a style reminiscent of Inglorious Basterds or Saving Private Ryan. I’d love it. He could get stuck historical battles and meet real people. He could actually punch Hitler in the face, or kick Goebbels in the balls. He could… I dunno, rescue Werner Von Braun or other scientists, liberate concentration camps and do it all in that glorious outfit.

I mean they still have good action and Civil war was good though the fight at the airport was light but was supposed to like the comics when the X men fought the Avengers . I agree on a WW2 story but never happen since Evans contract is up and cheap Marvel wont pay him a decent wage . RDJ was making 50 million a film and the others 3 million or less .

Great review! The First Avenger is still my favorite Captain America movie and favorite MCU film overall, because of the actors and characters, the origin story, the 40s pulp adventure aesthetic, and the music, and I think its highly underrated.. I also agree that the third act feels a bit rushed because they're trying to set up for The Avengers, and i definitely wanted more, but I was satisfied just enough with what we got because of the emotional weight of Bucky's "death" and Steve's sacrifice. With Hayley Atwell coming back on board as Peggy Carter (at least in What If...), I hope Marvel gets to return to that WWII adventure aesthetic again soon.

Saw it recently and felt it improved with age. It was "Captain America and the Howling Commandos". If it has a problem, it's that it tries to put too much into one movie. It should have been a 2 chapter serial with more defined missions. Considering, the character was not often adapted, they had to cram a lot of history in a 2 hour movie.

The 1990 film version of Captain America did receive a theatrical release in the UK. I was working as a projectionist at Showcase Cinemas at the time and clearly remember screening the film. The thing I remember most was its marketing company thought it was a good idea to produce frisbees promoting the film to be distributed to kids at cinemas. As soon as kids were handed frisbees at the box office they immediately started throwing them, as you would expect, which caused no end of trouble with them hitting fellow patrons and the concession stand in our foyer. We quickly decided to stop handing them out as they were more trouble than they were worth. That said, I still have one somewhere.

Captain America is and will always be a symbol of a good man, using his heart and couscous as his compass, and being the expectation of how Americans should strive to be (this will cause debate as sadly many.... just use it for their own purpose). Always been a fan of Cap, but feared the boy scout personal might turn people off. With Chris Evans, Joe Johnson, later Russo's and how MCU overall portrayed him, he was shown how I have seen him to so many others. He is hope, compassion, and looking to do the right thing. He will get knocked down at times, but he will always get back up. This movie was great. Not perfect, but it did Cap right, and the montage is quite fun.

Fantastic as always, and fantastic choice for your first forte into the "MCU". I remember seeing both "Thor" and this movie in the Theaters. While I thought "Thor" was a visually good looking movie, this film was more of a traditional and more well done film that really explored the character's origin, something that "Thor" really lacked. I'll admit, I was a bit iffy on the casting of Chris Evens as Captain America, but he really nailed the role. Also, I can never forget the music, especially the "Captain America March", such an amazing theme. It really fits with the old time setting and the whole superhero motif. This year, I attended my very first "Free Comic Book Day" at my local comic book shop, and while me and my Dad were there, the Shop was playing some comic book movie music, and a slower version of the Captain America March played as one of them. Been such a long time since I've seen this movie, and now its 10 years old. What a milestone.

I liked this film as the director knew the era and gave us a good origin film with the Red Skull as the bad guy . I liked Caps outfit and helmet since wasnt hokey like the Avengers film. Wasnt much screen time for the Howling Comandos made me wonder why to include them but still nice touch . I bought the bluray as soon as it came out with the side cover with the first Captain America comic cover on the back . I have the ps3 game Captain America Super Soldier and still have my ps3 console and when the made Winter Soldier the way Cap fights at the beginning is like the game .

I like this movie, it feels like an innocent little period piece compared to some later Marvel movies. The scene where Bucky watches Stark on stage at the expo is a bit creepy now considering!

I remember hearing about the '90s movie for a couple years before it finally came out .... and knowing it would suck the entire time. That was miserable. Waited 25yrs for the 2012 movie, and loved it, loved it taking my son to it, still love watching it today :)

To me, Cap became a relatable character and really the heart of the Avengers with the 3 movies inside the MCU. All 3 excellently crafted, character-driven stories which can stand without the action scenes. In his deepest core, in the words of Dr. Erskine, Steve was a good man. Not perfect, but good. And that was enough. And the Winter Solider expanded and redefined the icon. I am looking forward for the Winter Soldier review, which is to me, is the best MCU movie of all time. 1:42 oof, that musical queue from Endgame as well.

I love this movie not sure why there is so much hate towards it. I think that Cap had the best 3 solo movies of anyone other in the MCU.

As the guy who made the video never read the comics and perhaps dont enjoy it as fans do . Its different from Ironmans origin but still good . I wish mcu could had made a film with Cap and Bucky in another adventure in WW2 .

I think the Hydra futuristic aesthetic worked as a benefit for the movie. I do agree that it made the film feel more like fantasy' at took me out of the 40's feel; however, it helped establish consistency within the MCU. Across the over 20 films, when we've seen the stones or where they're referenced, high tech was commonly involved: the portal device in Avengers 1, the gauntlets in 3 and 4, holograms in Gotg and Thor 2. Yes, there are other times where the stones were used by other means, like magic in Doctor Strange. I'm just saying the aesthetic in the first cap movie set the tone for how the stones will be interacted with. Either magic or advanced technology.

Chris and Hugo playing Cap and the Red Skull respectively ( Tucci is also great as Dr Erskine) made this movie top teir MCU for me. Marvels success has been rooted in their excellent casting choices and their understanding of the characters.

28:50 that is true. People hated how Wyatt Russel looked as the new Cap. Or even the Avengers game, where it doesn't feel right. The suit and a new face for Steve is something we are not ready for any replacements

Captain America was the character that I least wanted to see on film outta of the avengers but mainly because of Chris Evans acting and likeability he is now my favorite avenger and all 3 of his are awesome, especially civil war!!!

Caps got The Best film Trilogy of The Holy Trinity of Cap Thor n Iron Man! With CAWS being the Best followed by CACW! Iron Man 1 is Quality then 2 & 3 weren't Great! Thor 1, 2 are Meh but Ragnarok was Excellent (Can't wait for TL&T) Also I'd Love It if Marvel Remade Thor the 1st one, coz there's Too Many Dutch Tilts (I Think Kenneth Branagh tried to make it look like a Comic?) Which for me was a Hard watch! Thanks again Oliver for another fantastic upload! Cheers
