Redford was the sort of actor who got cast as the hero in thrillers of the 70s and 80s that Winter Soldier is modeled after. So casting him as the villain is a great move that subverts expectations of people familiar with the sort of roles he usually plays.
@brandyanderson3522

Yes the Russo Brothers have Saturday specifically wanted him for that purpose. And when they did have him cast, there were parts of the story that were made to pay homage to his roles in those movies

Interesting. I would say one of my few disappointments with this movie is the LACK of subversion around Redford's character. He seems like a semi-annoying political guy from the start, then it becomes clear that SHIELD is being corrupted, which ALWAYS naturally leads you to suspect the political guy at the top...and that's exactly who the bad guy was. For that to be a real surprise he would've needed to have a stronger "good guy" characterization early on. I dunno, I haven't rewatched the beginning of the movie in depth in a while, but I just don't recall much in that direction before the "twist". Perhaps they were relying on meta-feelings about the actor too much...or maybe I just forgot that they did that :P

A fun part about the directors is that they had only done comedy before this movie, and the most successful things they had been a part of were the shows Arrested Development and Community. Kevin Feige, president of Marvel Studios, contacted them about making The Winter Soldier after he watched an episode of Community with plenty of paintball action and thought that they had an eye for action. That led to these two comedy directors making one of the most celebrated superhero movies ever.

this was the movie that made people realize that these movies could be more than just superhero comic book movies, as fun and successful as they were. it had smart and engaging writing, great character studies, a crazy twist (which would've come from on high and not the russo brothers but gd does it feel completely organic unlike most decisions from on high in hollywood), and it's STILL funny on top of the spy thriller vibes. it also convinced people that captain america was actually cool, and a really interesting character--more than just a relic of the past. it's a standout in the MCU

This movie was an even bigger thing for us who were watching Agents of Shield after the Avengers movie. Even though Marvel didn't want to allow AoS to be part of the MCU, AoS went out of their way to stick to the continuity of the movies.
@anonymes2884
@anonymes2884 2 ай бұрын
I mean, AoS didn't do any of that against Marvel's wishes because, y'know, they just wouldn't have been allowed to :). You don't get appearing in the season finale of a TV show if Marvel hasn't signed off on it. (but I do agree that it's disappointing AoS has _more or less_ been shunted off into its own thing and ignored by the MCU at large because big chunks of it, S4 especially, are still some of the best stuff Marvel's done on screen IMO - keep hoping but I figure if it didn't happen in something like e.g. "Secret Invasion" it's _probably_ not gonna happen. Though some of the Netflix stuff has made it over so you never know...)

One of the technicians/scientists behind Pierce - bald guy with a beard and glasses - in the scene when Bucky is being reconditioned is Ed Brubaker, co-creator of the Winter Soldier in the comics. He didn't create Bucky - Joe Simon and Jack Kirby did - but he came up with the idea of Bucky having survived and become the Winder Soldier. Until Brubaker, there was an expression that "Nobody stays dead in comics except Uncle Ben and Bucky."

People inside the industry, no matter who they were working for, had a saying. When one of them mentioned that a character was being killed, someone else would ask, "Are they dead, or are they Bucky dead?" 'Cuz everybody figured Bucky was never coming back. In fact, his return caused one of those tempest-in-a-teacup furors that comic fans are so notorious for.

He also still has an ego, so he sees some of it as "not his fault" so the other members need to be reigned in, while also thinking he can get more official clearance from the government to do what he wants after the Ultron fuck up. Guilt, paranoia, and a little ego and hubris that "he knows best" is Civil War Tony. He's still out there engaging with the public and taking crap (he still runs a business). Yeah, it kinda highlights the plot hole of each of the post-Avengers solo films. Now that the Avengers are a team, why can't they give each other a call to lend a hand (or a really strong pair of green fists) each time they encounter a major threat on their own? The movies never really have an answer for that, since it would probably mean that they'd be over in 5-10 minutes. It's the classic old plot hole of "Why didn't they do that earlier in the movie? Because then we wouldn't have a movie." So it's really just better not to think about that.
@brandyanderson3522
@brandyanderson3522 2 ай бұрын
@glennwelsh9784 they can't really do like the comic books do, which is have a little blurb at the bottom that says Iron Man is busy fighting AIM in Tennessee. Especially since in some of these movies they're supposed to happen simultaneously, or at least with some type of overlap But also, I think like, "Where is Iron Man? Well, we know he doesn't live in DC." So, while you might be able to call him, he's not just going to show up. Whereas later on when things happen in New York, it makes sense to question why Spider-Man doesn't show up.
@3Rayfire
@3Rayfire 2 ай бұрын
@@glennwelsh9784 I think this film does have the best justification. This is all secret spy stuff, the manhunt for Captain America wasn't on the news, it was a SHIELD/Hydra operation at point-blank range with SHIELD HQ. If Nat or Steve had actually called any of their friends they would've alerted SHIELD to their location and possibly caused more damage. At this stage Tony and Bruce are in Stark Tower in New York, Thor was most recently in London with Jane, Hawkeye is probably at home in Iowa. So the we didn't have time justification holds water. Also in his first appearance Nick Fury shuts down JARVIS, so SHIELD potentially has the tech or the foothold in Tony's tech to actually disable or Override the Iron Man suit, so maybe having Tony show up could make things worse. As for Bruce...I wouldn't really rely on the Hulk's IFF in this kind of situation.

Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. was half way through their first season when the producers were told about this movie. The way they incorporated this into their show was legendary. It sounds strange, bu this is the first film that nailed how Cap is portrayed to move and fight in the comics. I mean comics are 2D... they do not move. But something about the previous two Cap appearances is so inferior to his movement and fighting in this. The scene where he tears through the building and throws the shield at Winter Soldier is one of my most rewound scenes in the MCU. And the Winter Soldier "screech" score is fab. This was the best MCU movie by far.

That little run up the wall as Steve rounded the corner IS faster than just running, because he'd have had to slow down a little to take the turn properly if he'd stayed running on the floor. Much the same way that bobsleds (for example) ride up on a curve to take a turn at speed. That aside, this is - in my very humble opinion - STILL the best MCU movie ever made. It's not about the world-ending stakes, it's not about caped gods flying around destroying entire cities while trying to fight the bad guys, it's not overly fantastical, AND it's based on one of my favourite comic book arcs from Cap. It feels exactly like the sort of thing Captain America was made for. It's also just a really REALLY solidly made movie that could almost stand completely alone - separate from the MCU in general - and still be rock solid.

The Russos previously directed episodes of Arrested Development and Community. It was their work on a famous “paintball” episode of the latter that earned them this job. As a result, you’ll see multiple Community cameos in their movies and Arrested Development Easter eggs. The janitor they pulled a gun in was Danny Pudi who played Abed.

Trivia: The "Scream" that is the Winter Soldier's callsign in the film is actually a remux of Bucky's scream when he fell from the train in the first CA movie. It was meant to be both character specific; and evoke a sense of the monster appearing like in a slasher film.

Also, Winter Soldier has the Super Soldier serum just like Cap. That’s what Hydra was experimenting on him with. So he’s basically Captain America with PTSD. Bucky is my favorite MCU character. Best character arc.

Bucky was made into a super soldier when he was experimented on in the first movie. Zola was able to recreate the serum. This does get revealed in something way way later but not in as many words, definitely not as if it’s a big revelation. I don’t think I’ve seen anyone be surprised by it, honestly. I think most just assumed he was made a super soldier

Knowing that S.H.I.E.L.D. was compromised by HYDRA adds more weight to certain scenes in the earlier MCU movies. It definitely shows us what Senator Stern’s actual motivation was to get his hands on Iron Man’s suit in Iron Man 2.

Fun Fact: Chris Evans did all of his own running scenes but they did edits make him faster to make his powers accurate. They said that his running form is 100% efficient and almost impossible for a stunt double to recreate it. Apparently he did ballet as a kid and his running style is described as "a dancer's run". If you look at any of his running scenes, his head has no up-and-down movement.

"Captain America: The Winter Soldier" was released in theaters on April 4, 2014. Likewise, "Thor: The Dark World" lined up with Season 1, Episode 8 "The Well". And Extremis from "Iron Man 3" was very much a part of the first 7 episodes of the show.
