yeah the stripes version is kind of an insult to this Beefheart grossly underrated masterpiece. As far as rocking out this version is rocky as it gets while Stripes version is a bratty noise.

@@partytill10 Being bratty noise is what makes The Stripe's version cool. Jack brought a fuck ton of attitude. Not to mention the ear rattling fuzz. Beefheart got the groove tho and is more in line with old school rock. Theyre both good in their own ways.

As an old timer...Frank Zappa brought me to the captain many many years ago! You can't mention the captain without mentioning Frank Zappa in same sentence in my opinion😊

Old timer ? Not old enough it seems.. Frank´s only real contribution to Don was studio time for Trout Mask recording, for which he was credited as a Producer, but he never even touched the sliders on the console there.. he literally slept at the wheel.. Magic Band did not need him at all. Later, he stole the Bat Chain Puller master tapes from Don .. So much for Zappa. Yeah, Bongo Fury, ok ok 😉

The captain and frank went to antelope valley high school together in lancaster california...I lived in lancaster california for 20 years,but even years before that...I knew most everything about both great men of music,artistry and genius!...I own everything released by both great composers as well! I know more than even the most hardcore zappa freaks still alive out there today!!

Zappa recorded two or three numbers from laterTMR before the album was even rehearsed.. see if I can remeber.. Moonlight on Vermont, Veterans Day Poppy.. and the one with Doug Moon ? Harkleroad complained Frank turned treble on that silverface fender all the way up.. he had a Tele with Gretsch pickup and you can clearly hear that searing sound on Vermont.... not bad really, but different from the rest of TMR album proper...

Someone else is trying to figure out what is the lyrics meaning? I'm not an native english speaker, so it's harder to guess what he meant to say... It seems that he found a true love that convinced him to get a job just to look like a nice man and get along with her family. But he found out that the "real life" (the party of special things to do) is kinda disgusting because of the Mirror Man (ego), Elixir Sue (id maybe?), Red Queen (maybe someone hierarchically superior who used upset him just for fun). So, for me, this song it's about a grasshopper who tried to be an ant to impress a girl, but it get mad at how strange its life has become. But wtf is a camel wering a nightie? Lol

it's good for what it is.. captain is my favorite, and this and the previous albums are good examples of how you would feel when you try to do something just for money and not for your intention.. captain really cries in some tracks like 'i don't want to do this pop sh*t.. wish everybody can perform their artistry in their own professions without financial anxiety but that's how the world is i guess. rest artistic captain.. :()

Agree. I got into the Captain a few years ago and this album as well as Unconditionally Guaranteed were just blasted by people. I bought them both not expecting much, but they are in heavy rotation with the rest of my Beefheart vinyl.

Anyone's talking about Replica and my only Album by him that I bought because my father talked about how he practiced his band in slavery for every false note and every stoned joke. I have so tried to like it or get it but I just don't. I've really tried for over 20 years but I can't stand it. Some arty snobs will say that I just don't have the skill to get it or the education to really feel it. What a sad way to look at others who are not into the same stuff. I really loved Safe as Milk and some blues compilation I heard from his career. He seemed to be a truly unique, judging by a documentary about him, those albums i've heard and and by how many artists say him a direct inspiration.

Beefheart is all you need here... i just could never take Jack White's voice. And he doesn't have an original bone in his body of work...so there's no comparison... i like some of his songs and that he works with vinyl i would give him mucho props for the 1st record. But there is only one Captain
