I had a 17' bowrider on Riffe Lake, SW Washington state. This is a mountain lake 23 miles long with a dogleg ⅔ of the way uplake. It creates a venturi effect... you can have 5mph of wind on the west end of the lake and 35mph on the east end. This creates steep short-interval wave sets that can reach 4ft high in a matter of minutes. I had to put my boat right at the edge of the step, plowing its way along, then trim the bow up as high as it would go. My wife sat in the back seat to ballast the stern down even further... that was a gas-guzzling, soaking wet hour ride to get down to the point. We rounded "Venturi Point" and within a mile the waves dropped to mere inches. Funniest part of all this... NAS Whidbey Island uses the three dams in this area... Mayfield, Mossyrock, and Cowlitz Falls... for low level bombing practice. They have laser recievers on the dams, and they are WAY below the ridge tops as they come up the Cowlitz River canyon. Maybe 200-300ft AGL at most. This particular day while I was pounding west in these waves, I suddenly see an F-18 coming east barely ¼ mile off my port side. He was at best 200ft up, doing .9 Mach (I couldn't hear him at all until he was directly abeam my port side!!!). I pulled the throttle off so I didn't plow into a log while I watched him... and looked back forward just in time to see 6-8 inches of green water come over the bow. Oops!!!!! Got distracted.... I'm really glad I had a good bilge pump. All our gear in the bilge locker was floating. I pulled the power off, the bow dropped, and a wave just walked right over the bow. Got back into the power, bow came up, all the water went aft to the pump, and we were pounding away again.

Most skippers of small vessels have no comprehension of the principle to tilt an engine to lift the bow to compensate sea conditions, typical of your videos I watch. Speed is not essential but enough power to keep the bow up makes the difference. Then in the calmer sea yes tilt the engine to lower the bow to compensate. That's over 30yrs of being at sea.

Why does everyone insist in heading out Haulover directly down the middle??? It's so clear to go along the south seawall and cut to the right and head southeast until you are out far away from the waves breaking at the entrance.

Is it me or are the captains of many of the smaller and less expensive boats, much more cautious and seem to have much more respect for the water and boats. Maybe because they're not loaded and actually care to take care of their vessels? Whatever the answer, I've seen MANY good pilots and all in smaller, less expensive boats. It's good to have respect for the water. If you don't, it'll take you, and your boat OUT!!!😳👍🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻
