Captain James Cook, a British Navigator, Cartographer and explorer was one of the pre-eminent sailors and innovators of his age. Now a controversial figure for indigenous cultures who see him as the instigator and symbol of European colonial expansion and genocide; the real James Cook was actually quite a different man to what has been imagined. Coming from abject poverty in rural Yorkshire England; raised among the pacifist and hard working Quakers, he dreamed of sailing to far off lands in the pacific since he was a boy. Working as an apprentice aboard a grubby Whitby Cat collier, he soon proved himself a hard working and competent sailor. He was later to join the Royal Navy and sail to Canada, taking part in the siege of Louisburg and Quebec, while learning the cartography and surveying skills that were to revolutionise the Navy from that time on. James Cook circumnavigated the globe three times, charted approximately a third of the unknown coastlines of the globe; beginning with his first voyage aboard the Endeavour, with Naturalists Joseph Banks and Daniel Solander. He was the first man to sail below, and above the 70th parallel, and his regime of hygiene and fresh food revolutionised the management of scurvy while at sea. For this, he was admitted as a fellow to the Royal Society, as well as raised from the rank of Master, to Lieutenant and then Post Captain -something that would otherwise have caused a scandal among the high society gentry, if it were not for his incredible reputation. In all three of his major voyages, spanning twenty years, he never lost one crew member to the disease, which was an astonishing achievement when compared to a 40% plus death rate that was typical of long range voyages in the time preceding his. His untimely murder in Hawaii robbed the world of a humble, humane and dedicated leader, whose legacy now risks being tarnished by historical revisionists more focused on political activism than historical reality.

@taneh-d4065 Funny how Tupaia didn't know about New Zealand. Funny how pottery skills were as far as Tonga and Samoa, but not New Zealand. Also, it'll be silly not to use a guide when there's one. One who's place of birth was "stolen" by other Polynesians. He was of great use in New Zealand (which Cook went to because of Tasman's discovery) as he could communicate. None of that in Australia though, nor did he know Australia existed. Cook was a great man and so was Tupaia.

@@PortugalZeroworldcup idk about the 4 other crew men but I do know that when he tried kidnapping the king of hawai'i island, (trying to make the islanders fearful) we surrounded the king innstead. to be disrespectful as was captain cook meant death. all would go through such a punishment, even another chief. and so, captain cook fell, and his throat slit. becaue he was a man of high status, tradition goes, as he was buried like that of a chief. your flesh melted from your bones, sometimes dismembered to do such, and hidden away in the caves of the chiefs. because he was foreign, not all of his body belonged on the island, so his behind and onne hand was given in respect.

Back in the year 1999 I was in Newport Harbor S. California when a replica of the James Cook sailing ship on a world tour was docked at the Newport Marine Museum and I had a opportunity to board her. By today’s standards it was small and the living space between the deck area set up for the soldiers on board for protection was no more than five feet high. To imagine leaving port headed out on the open sea and not knowing what is over the horizon or how long before you reached land and if your food and supply’s would last etc. really made me realize how brave Captain Cook and his sailors were. Truly exceptional and talented men who we owe a gratitude of thanks for expanding our knowledge of the world.😂

This was one of the most well presented documentaries I have seen in quite a while. I was born in New Zealand and came to Australia at the age of 5, in 1980. While we did learn about James Cook in school, I really had no knowledge about his early life and how he worked his way up through hard work, kindness to his fellow man, and determination. My favorite part, however, is the point that was made at the end. Being the best person you can be, and helping others. I wonder how many of those dim witted vandals would follow that path, or even understand it for that matter. Thankyou.

In my opinion from going to Easter island, Peru, Mexico, Egypt, honestly believe we as modern humans are missing huge history before the great flood at the end of the ice age and way before. Too many amazing impossible engineering triumphs we cannot achieve even today with that much precision even with g.p.s.. history is written by the victors obviously, since the perceived losers, don’t get to publish and distribute lies to their subjects. A dog cud figure out that humans make up and lie to boast their theory or position for money, greed, power, safety even. Every story, human history story should be re-examined, so that we learn from the past to not repeat the mistakes by promoting lies from the start.

Coming from a town of 50% Maori I am well aware of anti Cook sentiment and the lack back fill knowledge of his history. We have been trying to raise education of all navigators particularly the skill of the Polynesians. A Maori friend of mine promoted this with building and sailing from Tahiti to New Zealand in a traditional waka. But we need to realise that there are two cultures and understanding each is important.

It's funny actually because for a long time Hawaii was known as the "Sandwich Islands", and the British Empire respected Hawaiian sovereignty. Then the United States came and just took it by force. To this day, Hawaii has a Union Jack on their state flag, as a sign of deep respect and admiration of the British, because of Captain Cook. It is good to see someone bothered to research and put out the facts of this extraordinary man. He worked hard for everything he earned. Much respect must be paid to him. The best way to stop false stories about historical figures is to research their lives. Reporting it to back everyone who cares to know the truth. Captain James Cook certainly does not need to be misjudged by people who did not even live in his time period.

While on summer vacations on the Black Sea side during 1975 - 1980), I had a chance to find in the special library, dedicated to wars on the sea, in Sevastopol (a port in Crimea) a translated version of captain's journal during his journey's. It was amazing experience reading Cook's daily notes, I remember to these days.

Thank you for telling the full story of Captain Cook. As an Australian, I have to admire Captain Cook's bravery, intelligence and humanity. Any racial smearing of his achievment is not benifiting anyone's interests. Politcal correctness may have blinded a lot of people's conscience.

Full of admiration for him, a man ahead of the times. I've sailed on the UK's exposed east coast, New Zealand's Marlborough Sounds where he laid up the Endeavour and seen some of his Alaskan waters, a forbidding patch of water it there ever was one. Until GPS I was still using charts based on his recordings. His observations must have saved so many lives.

Cook is paraded and held up in lights with history recorded very much in his favour. I have always thought cook was a glorified pirate and a remarkable fraud, with a lot of talent boosters. He had use of the chronometer before it was publically available, (and may well have tested its accuracy), and he had aquired unpublished maybe even stolen maps, from the french and dutch, who had already made detailed maps that gave him prior knowledge.

Russ. You are close to the mark except Cook was good man. It was his superiors that turned his many failures into lies and hero worship to ensure more funds for future voyages. The Dutch maps he was given were not stolen as everyone in Europe had access to them. The Spanish maps were stolen. My reply to reply on 10,000 Dutch ships, today above for more info.

The last series of Australian charts in fathoms & feet still had some with "authority J Cook, RN" in their margins. I'm told some of present NZ charts still have this. An old skipper told me that none of these were more than 1nm out. Cook also trained a whole generation of great navigators, including Flinders & Bligh.

He left a huge legacy of being a man with vast humanity, who cared for his men with such dedication for their wellbeing, ensuring they had good healthy food, cleanliness and consideration for all they met. A very clever, self motivated and humble man. He was never a slave owner or a conquerer of any island. A man before his time. Thank you for sharing this very interesting video

I was a teacher in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada and taught English. One of my assignments for the students was to talk to a family member, preferably an elderly one, about their family tree. One young lady wrote about how she was related, on her mother's side, to Captain Cook. What a coincidence! I visited the town of Whitby where fishing boats still ply their trade; a wonderful resort town full of history.

You just can't get a good hamburger anywhere here, so please have a Fatboy for me, at one of the several restaraunts that are called The Greeks, preferably either the Dairy Whip on Marion, or Mrs Mike's on Tache, both in St Boniface. I'd give my right arm for one of those! All the best to you and to Winnipegers!

One thing I learned in university, keep so-called, "progressive" historians away from anything to do with history, they'll turn it around to fit their own prejudices & hatreds. I learned a long time back, that the truest treatment of our history were books written before these faux-historians were born.
