The fact that Cook came from a poor family, and excelled so high based purely on MERIT & good principles, despite the discrimination of him for not being a Gentleman, is absolutely astounding and shows what an individual can accomplish despite their position in life.

Back in the year 1999 I was in Newport Harbor S. California when a replica of the James Cook sailing ship on a world tour was docked at the Newport Marine Museum and I had a opportunity to board her. By today’s standards it was small and the living space between the deck area set up for the soldiers on board for protection was no more than five feet high. To imagine leaving port headed out on the open sea and not knowing what is over the horizon or how long before you reached land and if your food and supply’s would last etc. really made me realize how brave Captain Cook and his sailors were. While we did learn about James Cook in school, I really had no knowledge about his early life and how he worked his way up through hard work, kindness to his fellow man, and determination. A truely wonderful human being that performed at a level the rest of us can only dream of. In my opinion from going to Easter island, Peru, Mexico, Egypt, honestly believe we as modern humans are missing huge history before the great flood at the end of the ice age and way before. Too many amazing impossible engineering triumphs we cannot achieve even today with that much precision even with g.p.s.. history is written by the victors obviously, since the perceived losers, don’t get to publish and distribute lies to their subjects. A dog cud figure out that humans make up and lie to boast their theory or position for money, greed, power, safety even. Every story, human history story should be re-examined, so that we learn from the past to not repeat the mistakes by promoting lies from the start.

Thankyou for this..I am so glad you made it and I got to see it..truly. As an undergraduate in NZ in the very late 90s, one of my core papers was history..the first essay we were given was on first contact and colonisation so naturally Cook was obligatory. I went into the study of history knowing little but convinced of one thing..which you have confirmed for me.. people and cultures are essentially motivated by the same things irrespective of geography or time. I came across the directives given to Cook and was surprised..they seemed so enlightened for the time and so at odds with the popular and expected narrative. It made me wonder and like you got to looking at Rousseau. His 'noble savage' creation immediately struck me as silly because it flew in the face of what I already believed on the motivations of people. I'm surprised at how some can't seem to understand how patronising and dehumanising it was.. especially to the victims of 'nobility'. Race and culture matters not a damn, the hearts of people does matter. As silly as Rousseau might have been in this I always suspected he might have done a huge service in direct contradiction to what I just stated. If not for his views amongst 'gentle society' maybe the expedition directives wouldn't have been as enlightened ..how much effect that would have had on Cook's conduct if any, I don't know..but it certainly did no harm...with the possible exception of to Cook himself. I thought your closing remarks hugely valuable to everyone if maybe just this once we could learn from history. Thankyou again from Bank's Island.

How do all those who worship this man based on the documentary, know if this is true, it seems a lot of fake news and proven facts about history being rewritten, is a common practice in the media today. It's coincidental that it's appearance seems to co-incide with what the majority of the population would like to see and that's the tearing down of monuments, that a reminders of what occured during times that are difficult for others of culture. It's disrespectful to other people who have sufferered great loss and shows that they only worship their own instead of those that have tried to bring people together.
