It was the sudden change in background music that convinced Seven of Nine that Janeway was sincere.

This scene is perfect for people who don't get along. When I first saw it though I thought it a bit odd that Janeway took a more hostile approach than an empathic one. Maybe it fits with the context though because the Borg are forceful in their commands. I hadn't realized there was some difficulties between Kate Mulgrew and Jeri Ryan at the time. It sounds like Kate Mulgrew has owned up to her treatment of Jeri Ryan though and Jeri Ryan has expressed understanding so I do hope they have reconciled.

The more you look into the 7 of 9 character, the deeper it seems to go. Technically, 7 of 9 had 3 mothers: birth mother, borg queen mother, captain mother All 3 mothers were extraordinary achievers : scientist / starfleet captain / world conqueror 7 raised borg children and a futuristic borg son 7 of 9 feel in love (on voyager and in the borg virtual world) She observed first hand the omega molecule - which to the borg was like seeing God. She lived extremely full life compared to everyone else.

the only 7 episode i remember is where she wrongly accused a man of raping her. He ended up killing himself when the crew and his own people wouldnt believe him over 7 because a woman wouldnt lie. At the end its revealed 7 did lie by mistake and it ends with "the point is, he COULD of assaulted me" heroic music plays and they fly off. contrast that to the episode of TNG where Riker is accused of the same. Troi cant tell if Riker is lying or the woman he is accused of sexually assaulting. She says to him "Will I know you. I know your reputation. I sense you believe what you are saying, but she also believes that you did assault her." Geordie later says it was his fault for leaving Will alone with the woman to be wrongly accused of sexually assaulting her. Omnous music plays, Riker thanks him and it shows a sad Riker looking out the window knowing that this will effect his relationships. How can a older episode do the MeToo movement 20 years earlier, and better, than a feminist led show in the 2000's?

I love how Seven and Captain Janeways relationship kind of mirrors Data and Captain Picards. Both Janeway and Picard befriend and guide Seven and Data to dicover and grow into their humanity.
@lexsmith86896 жыл бұрын
NOT EVEN CLOSE!! Janeway was a true friend and mother figure to Seven!! All picard did was that when Data found himself in a blunder picard psychobabbled it like an annoyed teacher for him so as to jump to a logical conclusion where it was reproducted and recorded as another axiom in human social interaction science..

The relationships have many parallels and a similar trajectory. A starship Captain supports and perhaps encourages their synthetic officer in the pursuit of their own version of humanity. One key difference is that 7 was reluctant to. pursue her own humanity and few people questioned that she was at least somewhat human. Many crew members doubted she would succeed and felt she was too much of a borg to find her humanity. But it could not be denied that she was at least partially human. In contrast Data's desire to be human was entirely his own. His humanity and emotions (ignoring the emotion chip for now) were far different from what organic species were used to. Nobody could really understand Data, perhaps not even Data himself. While 7 was encouraged to find something that was lost, Data of his own volition looked to create something entirely new. The nature of their relationships was also different. I believe Picard was a good, noble, kind and emotional Captain, while remaining very stoic. Perhaps Picard could've shown more emotion, but that wasn't who he was. I believe he proved well enough that he considered his crew his friends and maybe a kind of family. Janeway was more of a mother to 7 of 9. Their relationship went much much deeper than that and we could apply a whole load of labels to their relationship. Janeway was still a captain first, but the emotional connection and support and had with 7 was very different to the friendship Picard had with Data.
@krzosu4 жыл бұрын
Pickard was not much into guiding data per say - Jordi was more into that - Pickard mostly just acknowledged and reckognised the progress as data grew. The one of the real breakthrough moments was when data asked for command of the starship and was curious why he was left out - and pickard acknowledged that it was his own line of thinking (aka data is just an android) that was the main reason why he was left out and he corrected that by giving him the command. so they could make the net to decloak the romulan convoy shipping stuf to duras sisters during their war against Gawron.

This scene is one of my all-time favorite Captain Janeway moments, especially from 2:38-4:50. Captain Janeway was such a mother-figure to Seven of Nine and truly helped her on her road to individuality. Janeway was loving, caring, compassionate and loyal to Seven; truly treating her as a daughter and taking her under her wings. Such a beautiful and moving scene between the two, with great acting by Kate Mulgrew and Jeri Ryan. Additionally, the strings that play when Janeway recites her captain's logs is a lovely piece of music and makes the scene even more poignant ❤

@thatlonewolfguy28784 жыл бұрын
Why did they hate each other? Surely that would have spelled doom for the show
@@andreap9869 That article doesn't imply anything with them hating each other. It just talks about how Kate didn't want herself to be sexualized in the show which resulted in Jeri Ryan being recruited to take that spot. She was just uncomfortable with having a female character being sexualized for the sake of the nerdy audiences.
@DocDarkness3 жыл бұрын
They didn't hate each other persey, but they didn't work well together all the time and Kate Mulgrew did make Jeri Ryan feel very uncomfortable on set at times and Jeri admits that she sometimes hated doing scenes with kate. The main sticking point was Kate didn't like the injection of Jeri's sex appeal. She felt that the show didn't need it and was counterproductive to the message that strong female leads don't need to be wrapped in skin tight spandex to be strong and effective. Most people realize that Jeri was brought on to help with ratings but her character became a fan favorite not just because she was beautiful but also because of smart writing and great character development. Most people agree that the strong points of the final few seasons of the show were the relationship between the doctor and seven which was something they leaned heavily on. I think things improved on set over time and I they get along now.

That's not ironic, by the way. That's even more awesome. Kate Mulgrew and Jery Ryan were feuding, but both knew that captain Janeway and Seven of Nine did not, and thus they found strength to put aside their hostilities and do the right thing. Few have this kind of virtue.

People rag on Voyager's writing, and I concede that the episode concepts were often formulaic and repetitive, but it never lost sight of the true vision of Star Trek: not a journey of convoluted space politics and masturbatory worldbuilding, but about what it means to be human. How the bonds of friendship, loyalty, and love persist, revealed through metaphors of aliens and tachyons and subspace distortions. Sadly, it went downhill after this. Enterprise was too enamoured with Star Trek history and put too much focus on the events that led to the founding of the Federation, and Discovery is all "this replicated food is literally our own shit" and "Oh, look, Michael is crying for the sixth time in thirteen episodes". Even Picard was terrible. "Hey, let's devote a whole series to this beloved character, but rather than make him important we'll just have him along for the ride, being subjected to ruthless character assassination the entire fucking time and then in the end we kill him." What utter garbage. I am so sad for the state of Trek. Scenes like this just don't happen anymore. The writers today have no appreciation for the identity of the series.

It helps Seven is cybernetically hardwired against the neuroses that get humans caught up. Even if she can't handle the data, she doesn't attach any sentimental value to her theories. Humans are far more vulnerable to sunk cost fixation-if they are deep enough in their rabbit hole, they can't handle realizing it was all for nothing. Seven lacks this insecurity.

I always regretted the producers didn't take this episode and run with it as true... up to a point. The idea that Janeway was on, or that Starfleet had a branch that knew of the Collector and stole his power core could have given the series the shot in the arm it needed. Instead they went with the cute ending where emotional appeals to authority sway characters out of what they think is right. The worst one was when Janeway stopped a crewman from doing something dangerous, heard their speech about 'needing to do this for X reason,' and Janeway folds without any pushback or giving the crewman better survival odds.

I'm expecting the honor system. Otherwise, what's the fun?

Well I know I'm a bit late but Seven's my ultimate favourite Star Trek character (it's only been a few months that I've really gotten into this, dunno why I never bothered before) and I know it off by heart lol, still confused about what it means though. Apparently Unimatrix 01 are drones that work for the Queen but I'm confused as to how it works because, just 9? Just 9 drones in Unimatrix 01? Surely there'd be tons of them. I don't know I wish the Borg were easier to understand sometimes, even though they're cool mysterious... IDK
