I remembered many years ago reading a behind-the-scenes story about how Jeri Ryan was brought on to Voyager because ratings were dropping and the cast became stale. When she came on board, the ratings - for better or for worst - went off the chart. I think 7of9 was one of the best characters of Voyager. It says a lot about her eventual return on "Picard". Great to see Jeri Ryan back on the screen. She has aged beautifully.
@mikereger11864 жыл бұрын
Gmon750 - agree that the first few seasons of Voyager were not massively inspiring especially when compared to TNG or DS9, both of which were heavily character driven. It seemed bland, and driven by what we would nowadays call SJW or feminist casting and writing. Shifting thins up a notch with a new character and more action was the right thing to do. It worked for DS9 when Warf joined the cast and the Dominion War started to ramp up, and for Farscape when Chiana joined the show. Both the above also went for a darker approach to the feel of the show at the same time. You can even point to the third season of Babylon 5 being its breakout, where the action goes up a gear. Yeah. This was the right thing for Voyager, it probably saved it.
@candacebordelonph.d.88904 жыл бұрын

I remember one of Seven's problems when she was first disconnected from the Borg was that she was unused to the quiet. She needed to hear the constant chatter of the rest of the collective. I often wondered why the crew didn't connect her via audio only to the ship's computer. That way she could have continually listened in on life support, stellar cartography, navigation, maintenance, and a few hundred other communication routines. This could easily have led to episodes of her either causing problems or rescues from literal inside information.

The thing about Jeri Ryan is that she plays 7 of 9 so consistently and convincingly well.. Every gesture, every eye movement reveals the conflict and complexity going on within her character. And you don't sit there and think this is an actress playing a part, but somehow you're also thinking, "Wow, is she ever good at this." Janeway (Kate Mulgrew) is the ideal ship captain and always played an essential role in the show, and I can see where there might be friction between Mulgrew and Ryan, because, let's face it, Ryan (no doubt unintentionally) upstaged her, and with Ryan's attributes, who can blame Mulgrew?

Admiral Janeway knew her younger self well. Her previous attempts to get her younger self on board with the idea of using the Borg's trans warp technology to get home were failing. But, then the Admiral Janeway said the one thing that triggered Captain Janeway to change her mind. She said "SEVEN OF NINE IS GOING TO DIE" And then, Bam! Captain Janeway went into full protective mom mode. Legal consequences of violating the temporal prime directive be damned. I just got to say, I love seven of nine, always have. She was a great add on to the voyager series, not because she was "eye-candy" but she had a really good character arc where she struggled to become more human. And she has real acting skills too. I feel bad hearing she and the captain Janway did not get along behind the scens because I really liked the both ass star trek characters. I hope they have had and are friends now.

Anybody can say anything they want but she saved that show just like Urkel saved family matters. On both shows cast members mistreated the very person who kept their checks coming in. Actors seem to have a little bit of an ego situation going on. I love the entire Star Trek franchise even Galaxy Quest! 7 became my favorite character and liked that she fell in love and I would have been pissed if she had died. And yes, she was and still is GORGEOUS! I can't believe she's in her 50's.

The biggest issue with the 7 of 9 character for me was the fact that her parents went out to study the Borg race before humans actually knew about them in the Star Trek timeline. There were a lot of inconsistencies on the show Voyager, particularly with Janeway's character. Though 7 of 9 was very consistent. Her character was also developed properly, as was the doctor's character. Everyone else was either cardboard or inconsistent, save a few. I honestly think without 7 of 9, this show wouldn't have made it past 4 or 5 seasons. Jeri Ryan's entry not only saved the show, but made it worthwhile.

I think Mulgrew was exactly right about why the character of Seven of Nine was so popular. ...And she was the new kid. Me, I stilll missed Kes. I was surprised you didn't mention how she got her name. Perhaps tellingly, the character was named after the android robot played by Julie Numar in the mid-'60s sitcom "My Living Doll". The robot was referred to in public as "Rhoda," a relative of Bob Cumming's character, but her official designation was AF-709.

@@Voodoowolfe Still not a valid reason to treat her like shit. Even less so if she had no talent. She didn't write the show. She didn't run the show. She didn't produce the show. When a young woman comes in to revitalize your show and comes into conflict with your Feminist ideals (Kate Mulgrew), there's going to be some ruffled feathers. As for the sidelining of characters, I think they did what they could. I like that Seven's observation of B'Elanna and Tom bothered the former. A human/Klingon pairing was already weighing heavily on B'Elanna despite Tom's reassurances (if I remember correctly) to deal with a former Borg member living on the ship and taking notes on how interspecies relationships work. The doctor's emerging interest in Seven, I think, was a nod to Data being interested in human emotion and showing that even a hologram could start to have an approximation of feeling towards another individual. Going back to Kate Mulgrew, I think it's funny that she probably didn't realize that as Borg, Seven would probably have the most physical coordination of most on the ship and would wear the least impactful clothing she could to keep up appearances while not encumbering her movements.

If memory serves, Voyager was starting to drop in the ratings and "7 of 9" was created and "Jeri Ryan" was put in that role, I remember seeing petitions on line to help keep the show going, as well as "enterprise with Scott Bakula" yes a bit off topic, but just looking at how they costumed up "Jeri Ryan - aka 7 of 9" it was meant to draw attention to her. They did what they could to try and develop the other main characters with their own little stories, but it was "Jeri Ryan - aka 7 of 9" that helped save the show, again it's been a long time.

7 of 9 was one of the best written character in the Star Trek Universe. Its unfortunate Ryan was poorly received. She certainly was helped by being beautiful, but i think it made her character more interesting, particularly through her suffering. I make no knocks on other actors with more tenure or ostensibly talent, but you really plum the depths of humanity when you see someone beautiful twisted in agony. You can still see this develop in Picard, the suffering and the failure to come to grips with life...and a good amount of just human darkness forged from a place that few people come back from. And..i know this wont win me any points with the Trekkers, but if Ryan took screen time away from the Neelix character then that alone justifies her presence.
