My guess is they weren’t prepared to let him lead the rescue Armada unless he had the authority of an Admiral. Alternatively Data’s death shook Picard up so much he couldn’t go on being a Captain. The two were incredibly close throughout the series and movies. I have to admit my hope before the series aired was that he led the Romulan evacuation against Starfleet’s orders. They couldn’t really punish him for it so they promoted him to keep him off the bridge of a starship.

@@xxDanRiesxx JJ's remakes should be spoken of with nothing but derision. Except for the casting. Everyone was perfect for their respective roles, but a perfect cast can never make up for a terrible script and the wrong director. JJ does spectacle well, and that's it. Good spectacle alone does not a good star trek (or star wars) movie make.

@@xxDanRiesxx no, not even close. I mean Kirk and company getting pulled into the future by Soran's first botched attempt to enter the Nexus, the future is not as drastically altered but the absence of Spock on Romulus does put the Federation closer to war with the Romulans so we can have Sela as a villain working with Soran instead of the Duras Sisters. Ultimately both crews team up to save the day and reset the timeline with Kirk being the only one who remembers and so stops Soran in the past. Then Picard gets a message from Kirk in the present to serve as that passing of the torch.

One of Shatners best performances as Kirk. That turn of the head after each jump - ‘this isn’t kosher.’ It broke my nerd heart. Kirk is and isn’t dead. Beautiful horses too. I wonder if the close up horses were Shatners.

I really enjoyed the scene when I saw the movie when it came out. Kirk is making the point that life has to have substance and that sometimes substance surpasses fruitless pleasure. In other words we shouldn’t pursue things that just make us feel good. we are called to make a difference.

This has such parallels to Star Trek Picard, cause Picard is feeling the worthless belonging at the beginning of the show when he left Starfleet. When Kirk said this to Picard, " Don't let them transfer you and don't let them do anything that takes you of the bridge of of that ship cause while your their you make a difference " This passage l feel what drives Picard to head back to space and create a new team and purchase a new ship. Cause he still wants to make a difference on the advice of what Kirk said.

I mean seriously it looks like Picard forgot Kirk's advice, his own quote about time and just wasted so many years of his life. It's so sad really.

@Street Buddha apparently Piccard was thinking in such 3 dimensional terms, that he forgot about the bottle store.
@vacuumofspace99773 жыл бұрын
@@darkshowers The thing about militaries (or in Star Trek's case, starfleet) is that once you get too old, they'll try to make you retire than having an almost elderly captain in a ship, especially if their ship is the pride of the fleet Alternatively, a good can take a promotion and work in an office. Seems like Picard chose the latter rather than leaving Starfleet alltogether
@darkshowers3 жыл бұрын
@Street Buddha I don't think it had anything to do with his bottle getting full. Picard saw an injustice happen and than out of character just quit for many years when he couldn't resolve it. If it is the Picard we all knew and loved from TNG, he would have not given up and done everything he could to correct the injustice at that moment instead of quitting. That's one of the major problems I had with the Picard series.
@darkshowers3 жыл бұрын
@@vacuumofspace9977 According to Picard, that is not the reason he left. He left to protest how the Federation handled the rescue of the Romulan people (by not acting at all) and the banning of synths. The Picard we knew from TNG would not have given up so soon or so quickly and wasted years away at his vineyard. That is the point here.

Paradox??? Picard never would have met Soran - so he'd never have gone into the nexus - so he'd never have met Kirk - so Kirk never would have left the Nexus to push Soran out of the ship

One of the best Star Trek movies. The music, employing the 1960s theme, is sad and haunting. As I get older, I can understand the attraction of the Nexus, where you can live your dreams.
@sidpheasant75852 жыл бұрын
For those of us who love it as we love it, this is the epitome - humour and gravitas mixed together, practicality and spirituality and of course the need to "make a difference". Beauty, contentment, peace and tranquility are just not quite enough. Say what you like about Shatner, but he acts this perfectly, saying those (prophetic) lines with authority and gusto, and boy does he know how to shift a horse! I could (and do) watch this again and again, and each time get new meaning in my life from it.
@insaneapples15592 жыл бұрын
This movie had so much potential and had some great themes. Picard realizing he's the last of his line. Kirk realizing he lost meaning in his life. But the script had plot holes, was rushed and so was the production quality for that matter.

1994, if we assume the characters are the same age as the actors. In 94, Shatner was 63 and Stewart 54. A bit early to retire even for Kirk.
@TheLegacyHero2 жыл бұрын
I feel like the storyline reason why Kirk retired when he did was because the Enterprise-A was being decommissioned. At that time, there wasn't another Enterprise, and also, as we come to know, the Enterprise-B was an Excelsior class vessel, not a Constitution class that Kirk commanded for decades.
