True story: That entire Blockbuster/Radio Shack sequence was filmed at an old North Hollywood, CA shopping plaza that was mostly abandoned at the time. In the shot where she looks across the parking lot, in view is a movie theater. That's where I first saw this movie! When those of us inside the theater realized what she, and we, were seeing, we collectively gasped and began pointing at the screen. That is officially the most surreal movie experience of my life. A year before, I noticed filming going on in that lot, lasting weeks, but had no idea what movie it was for until that moment.

Carol got those powers when she blew up the engine because it wasn't any ordinary power...it was the cosmic power that Dr. Lawson aka "Mar Vell" extracted from the Tessaract which is nothing but an Infinity Stone!...Its just like Wanda "Scarlet Witch" and her brother Pietro "QuickSilver" getting and augmenting their powers from Mind Stone in Loki's scepter or even Vision getting his powers from the Mind Stone.

It made for a much more complex story in the big scheme of things. We all knew the Kree had nutjobs. Now we see how bad they really are. If we end up having evil Skrulls, then it's a clear case of good guys and bad guys anymore. That grey area in storytelling is fascinating.

When I went to DragonCon (Big all-around geekery convention in Atlanta every Labor Day Weekend) after this film came out, I broke out my uniform from when I used to work at Blockbuster from 1995-2000 to wear as cosplay. Any time I saw someone cosplaying as Carol, I told her she owed me a new roof. Also related to the year 1995, the script that Stan Lee is rehearsing in his cameo is from a real movie called Mallrats, one of the first theatrical movies he ever had a cameo in (he had been in a few of the made-for-TV-movie follow ups to the Incredible Hulk TV show previously). In fact, instead of asking him to try to record dialogue for his cameo in this film, they just looped in the audio from his scene in Mallrats. That way, all he had to do was sit there and look like Stan Lee on the day of filming, much more accommodating to his declining health at the time. Also, because Stan Lee was playing himself in Mallrats, that means his cameo in Captain Marvel was also as himself.

I loved this movie when it came out. There was a lot of hate among certain parties for Brie Larson herself because of how outspoken she is about female empowerment and the treatment of women in Hollywood. Some folks just can't take that. There were also complaints about "lack of emotion" in her performance, but I like how you immediately picked up on her humor and how she's not a team player. She's a soldier who's been brainwashed, and she's trying to figure out who she is. This film is set in the 80s and 90s, and it's a deliberate throwback to simpler narrative styles used in earlier superhero films. The analogy to Superman is apt: Carol Danvers is by far the most powerful superhero in the MCU, comparable only to Wanda. Of course, this presents a challenge for the narrative: like Superman, she can trivially solve problems that other characters would struggle with. So she either has to be absent (off-planet, solving other people's problems), faced with situations she can't blast, or (my least favorite) depowered to give everyone else a chance. The Marvels, which is coming in November, looks like it's going to combine the latter two: the power switching means she can't go all-out lest she put the other two in danger, so she has to learn to work as a team.

Nor is it accurate, given how Supes often does face difficult obstacles and choices. Besides, you don't really know the Marvel comics if you think Captain Marvel is above omega level threats. She is not really among the most powerful beings in the Marvel universe, if that's your thing, ranking power levels. Like even Scarlet Witch, as I mentioned above in my previous comment, could be considered more powerful. Yet, she can still have an interesting story, right? That said, what I loved about this Captain Marvel film was actually the lack of a boss battle against the trope of overcoming a more powerful foe. Instead, it was more about her overcoming the illusion of control over her and realizing her own power. The final display of just how powerful she was, which was more accurate to the comics, was just the cherry on top.

@@hansschmid5639 Really? I'm not sure I'd agree with that. While there have been a few moments where other MCU heroes have enjoyed what they can do, have they really taken *joy* in it like Captain Marvel? Their feelings are always -- understandably -- complicated by their circumstances, or their history, or their existential crises (Steve couldn't simply enjoy himself after getting the serum and discovering everything he could do b/c Erskine had just been killed and he was chasing the killer), and the fact that they're usually up against a villain who is a funhouse-mirror reflection of themselves (Tony couldn't enjoy his face-off against the Iron Monger b/c he was going up against his surrogate father-figure). Peter's enjoyment is complicated by the pressure he puts on himself due to having his powers, Stephen spends his first major victory horrifically dying over and over again, Natasha's whole motivation is to make up for the sins of her past, the audience is charged up by the newly upgraded Thor in Infinity War, but he's just lost nearly everything... it's all very understandable for them to feel the way they do, don't get me wrong. But contrast that with Carol, who comes into her full power and simply has *fun* with it. She whoops and cheers as she destroys those missiles and ships, and tests what she can do. To me, that was refreshing to see.

Christian Bale has put himself on record as believing that American culture would be 'much richer' if the people in power weren't mostly white men. The actor made the comments during an interview with AOL Build this past Monday as he sat with Rosamund Pike and Wes Studi to promote the upcoming Wild West drama film Hostiles. "Our culture will be so much richer the day that we stop saying, 'Hey, it's all white dudes who are running things," Bale said. "Whether that be Hollywood, whether that be Washington, you know?" "We're going to get, in Hollywood, so much better films and so much more interesting stories being told, and America will become the America that the rest of the world sees it as, that makes it unique... that we recognise makes this such a beautiful, brilliant country." Bale went on to call the US a 'country of inclusion', explaining that he moved his family to the States because he fell in love with the country. Bale, who has two young children Emmaline and Joseph with the American make-up artist Sandra 'Sibi' Blažić, applied for US citizenship in 2010. "It's the reason why I moved here," he said. I'd say it's a bit two fold as to why a lot didn't like this film. 1st, well.. it's just a reality that there are a lot of guys out there that feel threatened or whatever you want to call it when there's a strong female main character, it's something that we see constantly within our society time and time again and I've no doubt that this was a big weighed down by it. 2nd, it touches a bit on the first part, but not so much as being outright threatened, it comes to being able to connect with a character, to see yourself in this character. I worked in a comic shop for about ten years when I was younger, and the vast majority of the people buying were white males, while I can't say if the same still applies (I'd not be surprised), I recall that Wonder Woman couldn't hold down an on going title because it just wasn't getting the sales that titles like Batman and Superman were for DC, and she's one of their "Big Three". I don't feel that there's a right or wrong here, I think it's just how we are as humans, far more easily able to connect with that which we identify with, but it puts a light on the reason that representation is important, so those that can identify with them have someone to root on and feel that they have these characters that in a way can represent them.. It's a tough thing, DC, Marvel and every other company that churns out movies, shows and the like.. they will ultimately look at profits and that doesn't always mesh well with seeing that everyone gets representation... Well, that went on longer than I would have liked.. anyways, enjoyed your review of the movie!

I think while talking about misogyny propaganda u missed some points why movie got lots of dislike. They introduced Carol too late, right before grand finale and suggested she is gonna overshadow characters we watched grow and got attached to for years. If her movie came earlier plus she was given some good cameo people would consider her more part of a team and even accepted her taking leading role in endgame. Second thing is actress herself who did everything she could to antagonise as much potential viewiers as she could. Third while i get that she was supposed to fight more restrictions forced on her then villains in this movie, having someone powerful enough to if not threaten her to at least make her serious would do wonders. Its superhero genre and superpowerful character, people expected some spectacular battle.

@pieceofgosa
@pieceofgosa 2 жыл бұрын
@@LordVolkov kind of irrelevant that Korath was Kree, it was established in GotG that he worked for Ronan (the bad guy) then one of the good guys (Drax) killed him in the 3rd act. Ergo, he was a total bad guy goon & alarms should have been going off the second you saw Carol on a team with him.

Coulson was introducing himself to Pepper in Iron Man while saying what S.H.I.E.L.D. stood for. Think of it as a proper introduction. Calling it S.H.I.E.L.D. was already normal way before that.

Guys it's really just a movie I didn't know it was that big of a deal 😭 More of a civil war in the comments for this than for captain america: civil war

I think the hate for the film is pretty stupid. Even though I grew up in an era where Captain Marvel was a guy (way back) I really like the film and the gender change. Marvel Comics and DC were due for better inclusion. Something Stan lee always pushed for.

Ignore the incels. But you can now see why it got the reviews it did. When a man plays a strong dominant type who speaks little, he's "stoic" and "strong". Characters like Batman. When a woman does it she's "wooden" and "lacks personality". Every single person who hates on this movie is a sign it did its job. Because it means there's a girl out there who watches it and sees through them and laughs and growls back just like Carol did.

@@Saphthings I think you're blinded by the culture war aspect of this. You've chosen your side so you'll parrot the tropes and defend the movie just for the sake of it. If the protagonist were male you'd have no problem admitting this was garbage. Marvel recognise it, that's why they haven't given her a sequel.

@@Nemophilist850 If the protagonist was male it wouldn't make sense with the message of the movie... You're clearly biased and just parroting the tropes to defend the sexism for the sake of it. The sequel comes out July 23, 2023 btw, and you not knowing that just highlights the fact that you have a preconceived notion. Captain Marvel was the 7th highest profit MCU movie. Budget: $152-175 million Box office: $1.128 billion. It's #10 best MCU money wise. They're SUPER excited to give a sequel to a movie that made double what Doctor Strange did. More than Guardians of the galaxy, spider, iron man. It's one of their high tier IPs lol. And again, you not knowing that clearly shows your bias.

@@Saphthings What tropes am I defending? Do you even know what that words means? There is no sequel. There is "The Marvels", a small all-female team up move with Ms. Marvel and Monica Rambeau that Carol Danvers is also in. This is the route they decided to go after Captain Marvel became such a divisive character. Bad writing and worse casting lead the franchise there.
