CLIP DESCRIPTION:
When the Navy sends some officers to check on Captain Phillips (Tom Hanks) in the lifeboat, Najee (Faysal Ahmed) gets nervous and shoots his gun right near the Captain's head.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
Two-time Academy Award winner Tom Hanks teams with Oscar-nominated director Paul Greengrass and screenwriter Billy Ray to tell the true story of Richard Phillips, a U.S. cargo-ship captain who surrendered himself to Somali pirates so that his crew would be freed. Captain Richard Phillips (Hanks) and his crew are carrying freight around the Horn of Africa when four Somali pirates forcefully take over their ship, the MV Maersk Alabama. While Phillips' team follow his orders to hide until they hear him give the safe word, the captain and a few essential crew members remain on the bridge as the heavily armed pirates make their way up to seize control of the ship. But the interlopers soon discover something that sends them into a furious rage: After effectively shutting down the ship, Phillips explains that the Maersk had malfunctioned when the crew pushed it too hard in an attempt to evade the attackers. In order to appease their leader, the ruthless Muse (Barkhad Abdi), Phillips offers them the $30,000 that's been locked in the ship safe. But that isn't enough, and Muse demands that Phillips help him search every corner of the ship to root out the terrified crew. When that plan fails, the pirates agree to take the cash from the safe and flee in the Maersk's lifeboat. At the last minute, however, they kidnap Phillips in the hope of supplementing their take with a sizable ransom -- a decision that leads to a tense standoff with the U.S. Navy, who would sooner see the lifeboat sunk with Phillips inside than allow it to reach Somalia.

Prior to the bridge takeover scene, Paul Greengrass told Barkhad Abdi to "own it." Abdi lost sleep the previous night in anticipation of his first acting experience. The next day, his improvisation of the line "look at me, look at me, I'm the captain now" was the clip used in his awards considerations. After Abdi and his fellow actors dropped character, Tom Hanks' first words to Barkhad were "so, you're from Minnesota."

Lol @ the Arab guy speaking broken somali Edit: lol just came back to this comment to see lots of replies. Lots of idiots in this comment chain so let me clarify things. The Arab guy was speaking broken Somali aswell as some Arabic. But I am talking about his Somali. Second Somali people speak Somali as a native language but Arabic is also taught in schools so many Somalis are bilingual. Nonetheless Somali is used in both formal and informal circumstances and Arabic is usually used in religious matters similar to most Muslim countries aswell as communicating with people from the Arab world. In short all Somalis speak Somali as a first language, most Somalis additionally know basic Arabic (enough to read and write) and roughly a quarter are fluent in it.

@artanjubba6208
@artanjubba6208 6 жыл бұрын
You're an idiot, Somalis do not speak Arabic, in fact 99% of Somali only speak the Somali language. The Eurasian guy offering food and drinks is actually speaking broken Somali. Not Arabic. Although Somali is an Afro-Asiatic p Language, meaning it predates Arabic. Both Somali and Arabic are related languages (Afro-Asiatic) The Somali language predates Arabic and is thought Arabic derived from Cushitic languages in the Horn of Africa. Arabic only became a language after the conquest of Abyssinians (Ethio-Somali) expansion into Arabia where Arabs were kept as slaved before the arrival of Mohamed (The Islamic prophet and father of the Muslim's) Although the Abyssinians were predominantly Habasha (Of Christian faith) This conquest was later mentioned in the Quran with a Surah in the Holy Quran. "Al'am tara keyfa fa'ala rabika bi'ashabul fiil " in other words, (The companions of the elephant) who were of Horn of African decent. This empire wanted to abolish the kaba in Mecca. Keep in mind, Arabs were kept as slaves by the Ethio-Cushitic people of what today is, Somalia, Ethiopia, and Eritrea. After centuries these communities began fighting one another. Due to difference in religion and languages. Even though they shared a common culture, phenotype, tradition and territory. Hence (Somalia, Eritrea, Ethiopia and Djibouti) Same people, new Nations. With that being said, there's one more thing I should certainty add to this history lesson. I'm the captain now lol

The gunshot seriously injured Captain Phillips, even if the bullet didn't strike him. A gun shot at point blank will do serious damage to your ears, if you aren't wearing ear protection. Captains gonna be deaf for a day or two after that, and maybe a ruptured eardrum too.
