I met Capt. Phillips when he was the Capt. of the m/v "Green Lake", a ro/ro ship at the port of Jacksonville, Fl. back in 1999 or 2000. We were the agent for the ship. He was a hands on Capt. and it was a real pleasure to help out the entire crew.

I had just watched the movie about Captain Phillips last night and it was quite dramatic and gripping. The hijacking of Phillips' cargo ship happened when I was 14 years old, just when I was starting high school.

He had received messages warning him about pirate activity and suggesting a different route, however the Somalian pirates operated in such a large area that a diverted route would still cut through that territory and would have caused them to spend a lot more time in dangerous waters, though this question is still under debate

@@caderauen988 I believe the territory of Somali pirates spanned of the cost for about 1000 miles more or less, so a diversion of course, increasing the amount of time on waters, in mind with a Somali mothership containing refueling, would be of no difference. Captain Philips choose the most efficient and fastest route out of that territory, so I say his decision made no factor in the endangerment or not, give or take.

If you investigate further, the crew members said the movie did not depict it accurately there are many things in the movie that were not accurate, Captain Phillips actually ignored Maritime warnings that he should stay 600 or more miles from the coastline and that he put crew members in danger because he was determined to travel close to the coast line to save time and money at one point he was as close as 250 miles from the coast when the boat was taken hostage, others say he did not offer himself up to be shot instead of the crew members that was all fake for Hollywood as was other parts of the movie.
