Private Security Companies are defensive only - they cannot undertake offensive operations, whereas mercenaries can undertake both defensive and offensive operations. He didn't say he was captured, he said he stayed calm (I suspect he meant stayed still to avoid detection) after he had got off the boat and was on foot in the mountains. The Americans attempted to stay in the boat and pretend to be fishermen, but the military saw through it and captured them. Just imagine... you've just heard that the op is blown and the other boat is down. What would you do in that situation? The option of trekking through the mountains for weeks - possibly without the right equipment and the army hot on your trail - isn't particularly appealing. I could understand why just pretending to pass off as fishermen might seem like a valid choice. In hindsight it wasn't - but that might just be because the military knew what boats to look for.
