Wait, did I hear this right... Did the Venezuelan officials go on their national TV and announce they knew of the impending attack/attempt and even give the names of the American mercenaries, and these goons *still* attempted to carry out the mission?

Its called audio editing. Play edited audio while having a flow of visuals to distract you. Fake news media, whether left wing or right wing, have used this technique forever now. You can only trust that the audio wasn't spliced if you have a continuous shot of the speaker saying/doing what you're hearing. So when you hear something that sounds a bit ridiculous like this, you can bet it's probably audio splicing.

There is a quantifiable difference though. they're just trying to reinforce the distinction. Private Security Companies are defensive only - they cannot undertake offensive operations, whereas mercenaries can undertake both defensive and offensive operations. The difference between Mercenaries and privateers is that mercenaries are freelance and can be hired by any non-state actor, whereas privateers are hired by an organised government Edit: so in this case Silvercorp SA could be considered privateers

OK, first off.... Just because you may have participated in a (special) military unit or operation DOES NOT MEAN that you are qualified to organize one. Especially one like this. Special Forces, Seal or Ranger, it doesn't matter. There are guys at the top (Admirals/ Generals) who put the plan together and lower ranked Captains and Sergeants that implement them. People need to stop thinking that EVERY SEAL or SPECIAL FORCES guy is Rambo. They're not. They might be great warfighters, but that does not mean they are great war planners. Nah, I doubt it tbh. I don't think he would want to talk if he was an informant. He didn't say he was captured, he said he stayed calm (I suspect he meant stayed still to avoid detection) after he had got off the boat and was on foot in the mountains. The Americans attempted to stay in the boat and pretend to be fishermen, but the military saw through it and captured them. Just imagine... you've just heard that the op is blown and the other boat is down. What would you do in that situation? The option of trekking through the mountains for weeks - possibly without the right equipment and the army hot on your trail - isn't particularly appealing. I could understand why just pretending to pass off as fishermen might seem like a valid choice. In hindsight it wasn't - but that might just be because the military knew what boats to look for.

I dunno, the failed 1971 Coup in Morocco takes some beating for shear incompetence. After successfully surrounding King Hassan’s garden party and ordering everyone to lie on the ground, the coup leader, General Medbough called out the names of ministers one by one at which time the soldiers shot them down. When he called out a name that a guest also had, 2 people stood up. Medbough stepped forward to identify the correct one and got killed in the crossfire. Coup over. And Hassan hadn’t shown up yet.

Right? It’s worth pointing out that early on in the Iraq war (dubbas occupation?, was never a war, what’s a better name for it?) anyways during Operation Cheney Attempts to Show the Middle East he can Achieve an Erection; [CASMEAE for short] it was constantly talked about how the US was building schools and infrastructure in Iraq. In the US, contractor generally means construction. So it really flew under the public’s knowledge for far too long that these ‘security contractors’ were in fact just corporate mercenaries. It’s a subtle language choice, but certainly worked effectively for the US

Interviewer: “Mercenary work.” Mark Denman (brother of merc): “Uh… *contracting* work.” Int: “When was the next time you see him (his brother)?” MD: “After he was on TV, holding up his ‘ *supposed* ‘ confession.” Dude, can you just admit what your brother has done? You *KNOW* he did it. What is a “supposed” confession at that point? Why can’t you just say your brother did mercenary work? There is a distinction between merc and contractors. If you don’t want to admit it, it shows bias. There is a distinction between CNA, LVN, RN, MA, NP, yet the lay person would say “it is all the same.”

Overthrowing a government is not a private military contract. The difference between mercenary and private defence contractor is that the contractor is there to defend as the name says. Meaning passive support and security tasks - in contrast to active combat and conquest.
