I was scared of becoming a captain and now, I feel better about it knowing I can practice decision making in the sim. Thanks Garrett!

Hey Garrett, could you please make a video on how you schedule your vacations with the airline? Do you add a vacation day to like a 3 day weekend or something like that? It’d be awesome to have someone explain how pilots actually do it. Also are you in a rewards club for all these great hotels? Just curious if it comes in handy as a pilot. Thanks for the great content!

Thanks for your effort and yes setting the appropriate tone as the PIC is the leader and Flight Boss is paramount. Your proactive, positive, safety oriented and efficient but congenial and inclusive attitude should be infectious to the rest of your crew as well as all agents you contact in connection with the trip or voyage. Notice my choice of the two adverbs in lieu of merely "flight".P.S. Two stripes outside USA means junior First Officer.1 stripe means Second Officer.2.5 and 3 stripes mean more senior FO and 3.5 stripes(more rare) means Senior FO in Command training. IROs or Relief FOs usually are Senior FOs who have received some level of Command Upgrade training for cruise phases. They do ve him during merely occupy the Captain's seat to provide relief during rest periods but is expected to make Command decisions as situations demand unless beyond their capacity in which case the Captain shall be recalled from his rest.He ofcourse can also relieve the FO when the latter's rest period is due. Both Crew are supposed to wear a cap but the Captain's hat is now distinguished by scrambled eggs toppings on the brim of his cap.It was not aways the case in the past but it started trending since late 1950s and caught on by 1970s.Sometimes additional to the 4 stripes a Captain is conferred a star! They are usually Management Pilots or High Status Training Captains.To distinguish between ground staff or Cabin crews that wear stripes and Pilots, the stripes for pilots are wider and if they are the same width the ground staff will be silver while Pilots are golden.Most low cost carriers for some reason choose to unform their epaulettes for pilots in silver.Other airlines that incorporates the one stripe Second Officer role are British Airways(where it originated), Cathay Pacific, Singapore Airlines and Qantas. and possibly a few others.

At my airline two stripes mean that you are a junior first officer. They do exactly the same things as a three-stripe including take offs and landings. Especially, because most of the times it’s just them and a captain are on the flight deck. After a few years they eventually become senior first officers and this is a natural progression, no extra exams needed.

Hi Garret, I loooooove your flywithgarret episodes... could you please please make an episode on why (in your opinion) there is such a low number of female pilots even in countries like the US? It would be really helpful and amazing to watch especially for the aspiring female pilots ✨

Great stuff! There is a lot of things PIC has to be aware of that many don’t think about. I’ve always been big on the decision making of an Abort. How fast they have to analyze a situation and make a safe decision. Also, heard anything from the future career where you interviewed?

Yes, I saw the Miracle on the Hudson, Captain's job is not an easy one far from it and making decisions regarding peoples lives. Being in any kind of situation must be extremely difficult.

On your next Q&A can you please answer how long it takes to go from first officer to captain
@sabrinasmith50884 жыл бұрын
Miguel Perez it’s completely dependent on seniority/demand. In the USA there used to be like a 20 year wait for the left seat because up until the early 00s flying was the least popular way to travel and also the most expensive so most FOs waited a LOOOOOOOOOONG time. The pilot shortage is bumping people up faster than ever. The company my school is with says upgrades are 10-15 months which is kind of crazy

Hey can you make a video on what happens if a captain and an FO has disagreements during the flight and what happens
@zippyman8184 жыл бұрын
Some famous passenger jet crashes with cockpit voice recorder data, have shown that 100% deference to the captain can be deadly. Sometimes cultural differences may be responsible. Good observation & Discussion here about the Asiana flight at SFO: www.cnbc.com/id/100869966

Hey Garrett, how long did it take you to get from a first officer to captain?
@byronhenry65182 жыл бұрын
Not Garret (sorry!) but I am a first officer at a different company. It really depends heavily on the airline/aircraft. At my regional airline you can become a captain as soon as you hit 1,000 hours. However at mainline United or American it might be 10 years on one airplane or 5 years on another. It also depends on the base. You might get to be a captain sooner if you’re based at LAX rather than IAH or DFW. At the very legal minimum to become a captain you just need 3 things: Be 23 years old, have an ATP certificate, and have 1,000 hours of flying in part 121 airlines. Most regionals will let you upgrade to Captain as soon as you meet those requirements. Since most mainline pilots are hired from regionals, they typically have already been a captain before in their careers. They’re usually limited by their respective seniority lists.
