I get that this game wanted to highlight Zelda's intelligence, but the game's finale pissed me off so bad. I didn't want the game to end up feeling too short, so I decided to find all of the might crystals. the reward for this? a statue that maxes out your sword fighter form for free. that sounds super cool on paper, except that at that point of the game, literally the only task that will be left to do at that point is the final dungeon, where you fully lose access to the sword fighter form by giving all your equipment to Link. like?????? truly what was the purpose of that final upgrade then???? like I am genuinely struggling to think of what benefit you would see from completing that quest.

@@Professor_Utonium_ What a shitty lesson. They didn't mention anywhere that they were only doing it for the reward, they just wanted to enjoy the game for longer. The reward for doing so turned out to be pointless, which was annoying since it would have been fun to use for the last stretch of the game. Doesn't mean they didn't have fun, just for them it's annoying how the reward is poorly thought out.

I’m torn on this game because on the one hand it was a return to the classic top down 2D style Zelda AND they modernized it, and it was so good! On the other hand, the game was disappointingly short and boring to play. And while I do think people hate on the puzzles in this game a little too much, I do agree they’re not the greatest and left a lot to be desired. Overall, I really liked the game for what it is but I hope the next 2D Zelda game is a lot better than this.
@nyxskip12 күн бұрын
I agree they did a pretty good job modernizing it while still mostly maintaining all the stuff that makes the 2D style good, the game wasn't great but I'm just excited that they're still making new 2D Zelda games at all (excluding the LA remake, which was very good but I want new games as well, not just remakes.) Hopefully we don't have to wait another 9 years for a new one this time lol

I liked it. For me I found that the combat is boring if you let it be boring. Sure, I could sit back and let a slime slowly kill an enemy for like 3 minutes, or I could circle around it summoning a bokoblin letting it attack, then summoning it again so the wind up period to the next attack doesn't happen. Though that said, just because I found the fun doesn't mean the game can't be faulted if a significant amount of players didn't. I think your idea of having the echoes power up over time is a great one. Would've probably increased the combat enjoy-ability for everyone and would also have probably cut down the number of echoes by allowing early game ones to stay relevant over the game. Plus rewards for exploration could be an echo power up rather than needing a billion echoes to reward exploration.

I've not been impressed with Nintendo lately.

I think Zelda's moveset should've had greater emphasis on the telekinetic abilities rather than the summoning ones. I found EoW the most engaging when I limited myself to using what objects were provided to me in the world, rather than summoning echoes. For combat, maybe Zelda could use the tri wand to cast spells that manipulate how objects interact with physics or deflective spells to turn enemies attacks against themselves. Giving her a copy-paste Link moveset that can be activated any time really defeats the purpose of playing as Zelda. On the subject on Tri, I actually kinda liked what they were going for with his writing. He's a being from beyond the mortal realm, so emotion is something of a foreign concept to him; so we get to see him learn to express himself as he spends more time travelling with Zelda.

I know Zelda’s intelligence and wit was supposed to be highlighted through the puzzle parts but what bothered me the most is they really could have explored some of the political aspects of her being a princess. I wasn’t expecting the game to have players win over and unite the other species mass effect style and then deploy them in a tactical way (which would have been cool they literally had a military general character) but I was expecting for there to atleast be turmoil in the kingdom with everyone thinking Zelda was causing the issue or for the other species to come to the main castle for help and support. Instead no one even knew who she was or even cared about Hyrule Kingdom a stark contrast from BOTW/TOTK which I think did that well. I did like hearing about Link’s achievements throughout her journey though.

Pretty comprehensive review and I can say I probably won't be getting the game, which is a shame because I've wanted a Zelda-focused game for a while now. And yeah I don't mind striking the balance between combat and focus on Wisdom but... yeah there could've been better ways of going about that I think. People saying "well you didn't HAVE to use the echo that makes everything trivial" I think kind of miss the point: it is there, ergo it means that you can skip a large amount of content. CHOOSING not to defeats the purpose of the GAME creating the challenge for the player. They could've put further limitations on summoning the cloud, for instance, and it looks like in one of your clips the little spider dude was outright climbing on the camera side? Which makes me wonder if they just. Didn't realize how far that could go. I will say though, the "girl game for girl gamers" bit got pretty old pretty fast. I understand it was supposed to be sarcastic, and I could hear that, but it really didn't add anything to the review, sorry. Just got kinda painful to listen to, a case of satire sounding... a little to close to what it's trying to make fun of to effectively be satirical. Tone alone can't do it.

I enjoyed Echoes of Wisdom. However, I'm of the opinion that it's not as good as many other Zelda games. That said, even the worst Zelda game is alright, and EoW is not the worst Zelda game. What this got me thinking about is puzzle design. I'm relatively confident making objective assessments of many other game design elements (e.g. The Echo selection menu is poorly designed, and would have been better designed if you could whitelist (favorite) or blacklist Echoes.) But I'm not confident in assessing puzzle design. I'd welcome your thoughts, dear reader. Puzzles seem to come in two breeds: logic-based ones, where the elements of the puzzle are all completely clear (e.g. rotating a room full of mirrors and push-blocks to direct a laser), and perception-based ones, where undeestanding the puzzle elements is the solution to the puzzle (e.g. once you notice the bombable wall, you have solved the puzzle). Most puzzles in EoW are logic-based, I think. You enter a room with clearly defined elements, and you use your clearly defined tools to clear the room (e.g. Room has a gap, Flying Tile time). Since Zelda has some incredibly powerful tools that can be applied to solve a great deal of puzzles in the exact same way (Flying Tile, Water, Cloud, etc), people say the puzzles are poorly designed. I'm inclined to agree; surely solving this many puzzles by "skipping" them is less than ideal. I suppose, then, that using different "skips" in TotK is more acceptable, because there aren't solutions that can be applied to solve so many different puzzles for so little effort. Some puzzles in EoW, or at least some puzzle components (almost necessarily) are perception-based. There is a chest in the Gerudo sanctum dungeon that is visible, but blocked off entirely from, a room you pass through - a tease. The hint to the puzzle's solution is a trickle of sand particles coming from the ceiling in the chest room. On the roof of the dungeon's exterior, there is a one-tile patch of sand that can be excavated by the mole Echo, allowing you to drop into the chest room. This puzzle has exactly one solution. Is this a good puzzle? I know I didn't like it, because I felt frustrated, never figured it out on my own, and eventually saw the solution in a Let's Play. But the hint was there. Maybe it is a good puzzle, because it's optional. I strongly disliked the gameplay of Ghost Trick: Phantom Detective for that reason: the entire game is composed of mandatory perception-based puzzles that I either solved very quickly or became very frustrated with. (Amazing story though). Another Zelda example is early on in Twilight Princess. If I recall correctly, you find a gap that you cannot cross, and Midna wonders if you can find something to use as a bridge. The solution is to literally backtrack to a completely different part of the map where, earlier in the game, you saw an out-of-place bridge sitting against a cliff. Once you understand the puzzle, it is solved. Until then, you wander aimlessly. I'll take a Bed Bridge over that any day. And don't get me started on how many times I tried to dig in my heels and catch that Goron before realizing that the task I thought I had to complete was literally impossible before I backtracked for the Steel Boots. But surely not all perception-based puzzles are bad. We all love hidden walls - looking out for whatever visual elements the game uses to communicate a secret and bombing/smacking it. And surely not every puzzle needs to be a room of mirrors and blocks on a tile grid, or a bunch of pipes, or switches that toggle overlapping groups of lights, some other logic puzzle in order to be good - or in order to be both challenging and not awful at the same time. Challenging logic good, challenging perception bad? Is the Deku Jail Echo-less Piece of Heart puzzle is a gold standard? Do people who think EoW needed better puzzles want more puzzles like the Deku Jail Piece of Heart? I'm running out of steam. I don't understand what makes a good or bad puzzle. Please help.

TOTK isn't a bad game. It's just not amazing if you played BotW a couple times. The great thing about BotW was exploring fresh overworld. Bafflingly, ToTk had almost no fresh overworld. Somehow the Zelda team didn't know why BotW was so awesome. The underworld was vastly inferior to the overworld. Seemingly the devs thought gamers would be blown away by a whole new map. But we realized very quickly the map was copy/paste, removed everything interesting, apply a single color scheme, and add poison everywhere. Super lazy, tedious, and uninteresting. Sky islands were so sparse they barely deserved a layer. Crafting system felt cool at first, then cumbersome. EoW team really should have taken note that large inventories of craftables isn't a positive mechanic. In TotK once you craft the 2-fan bike you basically break most of the game and no longer need to bother crafting anything. Dungeons were worse than the absolutely fantastic Divine Beasts. Bosses were better at least. The second map should have been the ancient past and you control Zelda. Zelda explores the ancient past where the Zonai ruins are alive and active cities. She activates new Divine Beasts where they appear in Links time as allies. She works with Link across time to help him reach new areas and finish his quest. The other TotK criticism is the time in dev. It was longer than BotW. This is not great looking at how much copy/paste they did. Yeah COVID happened but it didn't stop other teams from cranking out fresh open worlds. Feels like Nintendo started coasting on Switch success. If Zelda wants to get back on the radar and not slide back to pre BotW sales, I think the main team has its work cut out. Streamline or scrap the crafting. Do something impressive like liquid physics (See Astro Bot for inspiration). I would vastly increase world size and add oceans and sailing along with huge continents. Build on the army raids and allow Link to recruit hundreds of warriors and engage in epic battles, both on land and in ships. Give all NPCs voice acting. Make Zelda a full on AI companion who talks and comments on her surroundings and interacts with NPCs. Make Ganon a live AI opponent who reacts to Links progress in intelligent non-scripted ways.
@SALT-cp4eu12 күн бұрын
I agree with all these points TOTK fumbled the time travel mechanic, and I was really hoping for Zelda to be playable and more involved. My biggest criticism is it would have been so much better with still an open world but a linear story design that respected the lore and wanted to tell an actual story. Twilight Princess I felt did this phenomenally. Another thing too was side quests could have helped fleshed out major side characters saw them get involved in the war and strengthened the Hyrule army but instead was relegated to bring me this item or kill this monster which only amounted in new gear or 20 rupees and never impacted the overall story. Much like how the last level gets easier if you do other quests they should have had the world get better as you unite everyone and help out key players resulting in something changing story or even just shops getting cheaper and towns developing

I'm fully expecting 4K re-releases for both games on Switch 2. Not sure I have yet another playthrough of this map in me though. It's going to take a very compelling DLC (not 10 shrines and a dungeon) to get me to play again. Mario Odyssey 2 and Mario Kart 9 will need to carry. Smells like WiiU.

Man, Tears of the Kingdom should have been Zelda's game. Like instead of staying with Link in the present, you should have followed Zelda to the past. It would be a reason to start at 3 hearts again, since Zelda isn't as seasoned as link. And it could be more of a reason to reuse the map (which I wasn't even bothered by) because it's in the past. So the floating sky islands and the underground wouldn't feel as out of place. Sure some of the story stuff would have needed to have been shuffled around, but all of the Zonai devices and contraption making feels like it gels with Zelda's intelligence more. Link would climb a mountain with his bare hands, Zelda would build a hot air balloon to ascend. Every time I watched one of the dragons tear cutscenes about what Zelda was doing I felt like "these should have just been the cutscenes of the regular game." Zelda deserves a genuine mainline game to herself, not an okay spinoff

Truly a wisdomless showing on combat. There are a few mechanics to combat you didn't really seem to be using that allows you to not just wait around. Hell, even some echoes do that job, sword moblins attack near instantly, you can just spam summon them to make them hit fast. It's like discount swordfighter form! Also about fighting stronger enemies, there's just situations where if using an echo doesn't work, using another one can work absolute wonders, and I don't talk about crows. That big sword and shield moblin is tough but there are some echoes that fight it very well, and it's certainly NOT the sword moblin lv2. Same for that fire shitass boss, there's literally rock golem that can walk on lava and get increased attack speed that way, they're fun to use AND efficient. Clearly thy wisdom hath been a little lacking, or at the least for that point. Now if you're excuse is the echo selection system is horrible, uh, accepted, that system is indeed horrendous 👍

Honestly it could've been a 10/10 short and sweet game if it was just a little harder and had less cheese strats.

I have, in fact, seen Eternals. But buddy boy, even I don't have the intelligence to tell you wtf that movie's plot was about, so I still can't judge the veracity of anything you're saying, Cap'n.

I have to disagree with you here. I actually love this game a lot. The whole " A girl game for girl gamers ", and " feminism " stuff in this video kind of bothers me. I hate DEI and Woke games, but this is just not that, like at all!? This is a great example of how to make a female lead, I just don't understand the hate. Personally, after the utter and absolute failure of a game that was tears of the kingdom, this was a very fun title.

13:50 I love you captain but I disagree with combat being this tedious. There is such a large variety of echos and a lot of enemies are designed around a specific echo being used to counter the other (flying enemies are good against short range, armored echos are good against range, magic goes through armor etc.) The combat isn't perfect but I didn't find it as cumbersome as you did.

I don't get way everyone was so hyped about Null, Bellum was a better villain, Malladus was a better villain, and people are saying this dollar-store Yami is some "New interesting villain that re recontextualize's the entire Zelda naritive" by making the trinity heroes akin to Hylia instead of the amoral beings they have been painted as since they where introduced! Plus, be honest: WE ARE NEVER GOING TO EITHER SEE OR HEAR OF HIM EVER AGAIN! Also, they don't even call the Triforce the Triforce, Instead everyone call's it "the prime energy" the entire game! Because apparently we can't have the Triforce, you know, the LITERAL LOGO FOR THE FRANCHISE in modern Zelda games anymore!
