Wish this was true in the real world. Such a difficult landing when the pilots cannot see where they are landing. I could not do it, no way. A ride in a taxi to the hotel is different from a ride landing a 747-400 in zero visibility. I admire the pilots who have the training and discipline to be able to land in zero visibility. Love all pilots!

It’s even more impressive that the design architecture for zero visibility landings was established in the 1970s and 1980s, but it did not see wide scale adoption by airlines until the 1980s and 90s

@John Smith adapted infers change, I think you meant adopted, and you would be correct as the gentleman stated above. Although the tech was available commercially in the 60s it was not heavily adopted until later as many carriers did not feel the need to put it on their planes. The people who wanted it most, as Mark pointed out was UK carriers because of the dense fog that had caused so many accidents in the UK.

Reminds me of submarines, there is no window, and at greater than 200 feet -- we normally operate a LOT deeper than that, I am allowed to say "greater than 800 feet" -- there is no sunlight penetration, and even if we had a light on the boat, we only be able to see a couple yards ahead. So we navigate with passive sonar and a lot of math. (I was a sonar tech.) :)

I appreciate the comment with respect to instruments, but it further appeared the pilots were doing were doing nothing more than closely monitoring what the autopilot and automated systems were doing. From a layman's perspective the whole approach and landing appeared to be a fully autonomous operation. It didn't appear as if the pilots were actively doing anything in any "hands on" sense. Am I speaking from a place of ignorance? Did I miss something? It almost appeared like the pilots could have gotten up out of their seats and joined the passengers in the rear cabin during this approach and landing. This seemed like something far beyond actively flying on instruments in IFR conditions.
@amritlohia82402 ай бұрын
@@petertownsend252 Indeed, all the pilots are supposed to be doing is monitoring the automated systems - they only need to actively do something/touch the controls if there's a problem (e.g. a sudden gust of wind makes it unsafe to continue, or the autopilot fails to maintain the plane on the centre line of the runway).

Cat III autoland is useful when the weather dictates its use. The pilots are very much interested in watching the glide slope and the localizer and the radar altimeter. Love to hear autopilot disengaged well after landing. If you know what you just heard it is very interesting. Funny if the 747 required a tow tug to find the terminal and parking spot.
