I remember watching that and many shows in the 90s which were filmed there for it being cheaper and that's also why you saw the same Canadian actors. It simply fit sci fi or any drama. Agree. The Megazord doesn't feel at all like combining the zord, it just like a separate 6th bigger zord. Also I don't like the separated cockpit even though it makes more sense in practicality. Having unified cockpit is the symbolism of they are united and together. It's a subtle thing that reinforces the theme. And they spent too much time to enable and disable their visor helmet. Another hollywood thing that want to sell the actors faces by sacrificing the coherency of the movie. We don't need to see the faces to know how the character feeling if you can communicate it with full body language, just like, uhhh, the TV shows. Or if they want to compromise, Iron Man did it best with putting the camera "inside" IronMan helmet to see Tony's face. That way we knew Iron Man never open his mask until the situation is over.

The toy version doesn't even look like the movie version. I think this is a big part of the issue. Like Midnight says, this adaption wanted to be taken seriously, so it shot in a super depressing environment with muted color, gave everyone a CW backstory, and made Chronicle meets the Breakfast Club. I feel like a lot of issues people did have with the film could’ve been eased with a sequel. The suits could’ve evolved or just grown on people, the ranger combat could’ve gotten more martial arts-y as they have more time to learn, get a more properly seen morph (even just reverse of when Jason demorphed at the end) or zord sequence, and maybe seen the other weapons. The CGI, especially for daylight CGI, was pretty good. Felt like they banked a bit on getting a sequel, and that could be part of why the film feels a bit off in some ways.
@daniellauricella51323 жыл бұрын
Execution was definitely not ideal, but I'd really argue that the movie had the right basic idea of how to modernize/reboot the franchise; make it like The Breakfast Club meets The Avengers. Honestly, were I to reboot Power Rangers, that's pretty much how I would think to do it. So again, I think the execution was lacking, but I'd challenge the notion that the project was misguided from the start, at least insofar as their thinking of "let's combine elements of Breakfast Club and Avengers". Again, I would argue that idea at least is actually a good one.

I think the worst thing they did is make this movie "realistic" like the first iteration of the power rangers involved space wizards and advanced alien tech. Plus I think the MCU works best when they start with the crazy comic book look and work backwards to make it more realistic. The costumes have a realistic take, but they are still recognizable iron man or cap. I feel like power rangers did the opposite, where they looked at the the originals and they came up with their own take on it and then painted power rangers on it. Like the look of the zord and the Rangers and even enemies are so far divorced from the original show it might as well not be power rangers at all. You can't really bank on nostalgia if you change the look of everything.
@timhare98673 жыл бұрын
The biggest problem in my opinion was that it was a Power Ranger film that took a full hour for the first character to get his Power Ranger suit, and 90 minutes before they all actually morphed. It was 90 minutes of boring Teen bonding and 30 minutes of actual Power Ranger action. I had no problem with them going dark and gritty with the story, and I really liked the costume designs. They should should have done all the basic setup for all of the characters over the first 30 minutes, then show them actually bonding as uniformed Rangers in combat over the remaining 90 minutes.

What i find very interesting about this Power Rangers movie is that it seems to have developed a fanbase completely separate from that of the IP it was adapting. See, I hang around Power Rangers/Sentai fangroups quite often, and while the tv shows new and old are often discussed, this movie rarely, if ever, comes up. And when it does, it's usually in a dismissive "that happened, better luck next time" kind of way. but Power Rangers 2017 also seemingly has managed to develop quite a strong cult fanbase of people who specifically like this movie, and otherwise don't care about Power Rangers as a franchise. Every few months or so I'll see a tweet or post saying "2017 power rangers was underrated, didn't deserve to flop", and people in the comments will agree and say stuff along the lines of "I never watched the shows, but i really liked this movie/found myself relating to the characters/etc" so yeah, I can't think of any other movie like this where its fanbase is seemingly disconnected from the source material it's based off.

"They're not great shows" I am sorry but I am gonna have to disagree with this. Have we had Power ranger shows that feel weaker than others? sure. Is this franchise very goofy and campy at times? absolutely. However, I feel like writing off most of Powers Rangers as just silly fun is a disrespectful to this franchise. Over the years especially in some of the best seasons like Time Force, Space, or Dino Thunder, Power Rangers has managed to to fine a fine balance of being goofy and over the top at times yet still manage to tell exciting, fun, and serious stories with very memorable characters that still stick with us to this day. Even early seasons like Mighty Morphin had high stakes and emotional rich moments with characters. Serious situations were taken very seriously and that was very surprising for a kid's show. Power rangers is not perfect but I do think people tend to get too comfy oversimplifying its impact on kid's shows or just oversimplifying it in general. We have for sure had more quality shows over the years than lackluster ones and I feel Linkara and Disney brain perfectly understand/break down why very well. Me and my friends (who grew up on the MMPR) really loved this movie. We went into the theater with no expectations and we had a blast - the more mature tone and story were interesting and the fights were fun. We were really bummed out when we realized the movie failed and there'll be no sequels

I think you should take a look at the Boom! comics they are a great blueprint for a modern MMPR team especially because I think most PR fans have lost hope that they will create their own team unless that 'leak' is true and it'll be a new team with time travel to still pull in the MMPR fans.

Was never a big Power Rangers fan, but watched enough versions from the late 90's to early 2000's as a kid to know this version wasn't gonna set the world on fire. I know there is a DIE HARD fan base for this movie (I used to know someone who annoyingly never shut up about it, trying to keep it relevant), but it really took the wrong lessons from YA adaptations, the MCU, and Transformers to try and modernize this franchise that maybe around, but a far cry from it's 90's hey day, and yet, they keep trying to make it happen.
@TeamTowers13 жыл бұрын
To be honest the Tokusatsu genre in general is pretty fun. Kamen Rider is great. But for Power Rangers in particular, I don't think the franchise needs to be modernised, because it had already more or less modernised itself on the small screen. Don't forget it's more than a 90's franchise, it's been around since the 70's if you count super sentai.
@heroicgangster99813 жыл бұрын
@@TeamTowers1 Honestly all Power Rangers needs to be modernized is some better voice direction for the suit action scenes and just having some more serious stories now and then between the episodic content. Also for the music to be better because I really do want Power Rangers music to be worthy of getting an actual OST for because music can boost scenes and not just blend in.
@TeamTowers13 жыл бұрын
@@heroicgangster9981 I would say Power Rangers kind of already the whole more serious stories part in the second half of the Saban era and throughout most the Disney era. It wasn't until Neo Saban were it really started to backslide, back to the level it started at.

I thought the movie was pretty solid. Nothing amazing. But not as bad as you make it sound. The one thing I’ll agree with is that it could have been more colorful. I think it has potential of being the character driven story it tried to be. Simply saying that it should not have tried to be anything above what it already was with the tv shows is the kind of thinking that keeps franchises from evolving.

As someone who is a HUGE fan of Power Rangers and Super Sentai I can easily say my favorite part of the movie is the very beginning when they showed Zordon and Rita's backstory. SPOILERS!!!!!!!! I thought it was really cool showing that Zordan was the original red ranger, Rita was the Green Ranger, and that she was looking for the Zeo Crystal. It was a really cool way tying all those elements together while giving them backstory in my opinion.

Power Rangers 2017 felt fun when I watched it. I even got excited when the Zeo crystals were mentioned because I had hope for sequels. But days after when I had time to process the movie, I realized several issues with it. And yes, the "let's be modern, grimdark etc." take on the movie just didn't mesh well. I'm not saying it can't happen. In fact, many episodes of the Power Rangers' seasons/series got dark and grim during the climax before the season finale like in Time Force, Wild Force, Turbo, In Space and Lost Galaxy.

I have a soft spot for this movie and wish we got a sequel to smooth out the issues with this one. I like the direction the franchise is going on all fronts with the recent seasons being fun, the video game being a blast, and the comics being legit some of the best coming of from any publisher. As long as they don't go overly grim or dark with the Netflix films, I think I'll enjoy those as well. Also hoping they give some love to the over seasons aside Mighty Morphin.

Miscellaneous thoughts: 1. The setting of a rock quarry, tho boring, is a callback to how the later seasons, mainly the Disney ones, heavily used rock quarries for their battles for better or worse. 2. I hated Kimberly destroying the car of the girls SHE wronged. 3. Whoever kept the deleted scenes out of the movie can fight me, they make the movie so much better. 4. I would die for Billy Cranston. 5. When they said “tommy Oliver” in the credit scene made me say OUT LOUD in the theater “WHAT THE FUCK”

The entire time I was watching this movie I kept saying, "why aren't they playing the theme song?" The music from the show, the theme, the background music, Bulk and Skull's theme, all iconic. All add to, what is otherwise a very cheesy and silly show and legitimize it a little bit. When they finally do play the song, it's for ~10 seconds in the middle of the 3rd act and it's too little too late. This isn't the only problem with the movie... but it's just another example of what they could have done but didn't do to make the movie fun and a little less droll.

Take some stuff from Kamen Rider Kuuga which is a rather serious but very simple tokusatsu hero story. Where people get injured or killed every episode, it relates back to the lives of the characters and factors into their growth of power throughout the story in someway, and by then you'll have a pumping action scene that you really want to see the heroes struggle and win at. Power Rangers needs a composer also that makes memorable music.

In France there is a film series called OSS 117, which is based off of the novels it gets its name from. It is similar to a French James Bond, but the books came out before the James Bond books. In 2006 the reintroduced the character, but made him a farce of the original character. I love the first movie (the 2 sequels not as much), and I think PowerRangers could easily replicate this and make it funny/a farce of the superhero landscape in an original way. I know there are a lot of these sort of films, but I think Power Rangers has more pull and capability with its established IP

I wanted SO BADLY to love this movie. I even convinced myself that it was going to get sequels out the wazoo. Eventually though, I saw it for what it is; a lot of wasted potential. I don't hate it though, and some things about it do really work for me, mainly anything involving their version of Billy. As someone on the spectrum, it was pretty cool seeing him interpreted like that, since many of Billy's tendencies and behaviors in the old show could be viewed that way even though I'm sure that wasn't the show's intention. Plus, Billy was easily the best character in the film, so there's that. The worst parts of this film are both the Megazord design, and Angel Grove being some little nowhere town. The world doesn't seem to be in jeopardy when such a lame and little place is the one being destroyed instead of a major city. They could have used the old stock footage from the original show of buildings blowing up and it would have worked better than what they did. I actually went to the dinky harbor village in British Columbia where they filed the town scenes, and for the record, the Krispy Kreme is actually a drug store. Oh and of course the place is only a few miles away from Lionsgate studios.

I was and still am a huge power rangers fan. All of my friends kept asking me about the movie and ultimately I had to tell them I wish it embraced the franchise more. You touched on that and really that’s the crux of the argument. I also hate the designs of the zords, goldar, and the putties. I wanted them to take a step down from the hard alien or machine look you’d see in Michael bay transformers or something. What I love about the movie is their take on billy, zordon, alpha, and the cheesiness of Rita and the krispy keem donuts. Hearing the power rangers theme as the zords come stomping through the field to fight goldar still makes me smile.

While I haven't seen the movie, this seems like a decent review. I'd just say I didn't think the acting in the original series was not wooden. It did as you said know exactly what it was trying to be and the actors followed through with that perfectly. To be honest I don't know what I'd do for a live action rangers movie. The over the acting, cheesiness, over the top nature, humor, action and bright aesthetic (and typically bright tone) was what and the original series so good. There's only so much of that you can tone down before it STOPS BEING POWER RANGERS. Like I want a more adult version of the show but... how do you that without killing what made power rangers so widely loved in the first place? The comic book series (of what I've seen) has been pretty neat but that too had it's flaws. I didn't connect so much with the original team the way they were written - Tommy shouldn't be the only character I really like.

The movie doesn't allow itself to have fun with the source material. They tried to mimic Zack Snyder, not Marvel, and we got this movie. I do think if they were allowed to have themselves to have fun and embrace the “stupid“ we would have a really refreshing movie. Although I didn't like it very much, Shazam(Captain Marvel) movie is the Power Rangers movie that we should have got from them, is light, but doesn't shy away from heavy stuff, but allows the kids to have fun, allows the stupid aspects of the source material and it knows that, it OWNS that.

I know that no one asked me...But I believe I have the _perfect_ idea to make a modern-day Power Rangers movies that not only pleases fans but opens it up to accessibility to a wider-audience. How? You use similar writing to the original Ghostbusters movie. That to me is the perfect example of a comedic character-driven movie that showcases how normal people can become heroes. Plus it shows _escalation_ in a masterful way; not only of the villainous threat but also as the Heroes grow in competence to combat that threat. Emulate the sarcastic sense of humor and serious devotion to the concept. Take all those concepts and apply them to Power Rangers and you've got not only a hit, you've got a sequel-generator.
