I concur. I’m not one of those people who like to claim the financial and commercial aspect of art and movies is irrelevant because it heavily is. I mean, then bills ain’t get paid by love but by love so good munny honey. However, there needs to be a balance: come with a good and heartfelt story so a good chunk of the audience becomes a dedicated fanbase. Start spamming with sequels and merchandise after people get hooked.

I ended up bringing a group of about 6 people because typing in "(insert color) Ranger" on the Atom Tickets app got you a free ticket. Everyone liked it. But before seeing the movie, I remember people not wanting to see the Power Rangers movie because they thought Power Rangers was childish. There was definitely baggage with the Power Rangers brand, was a different story than people actually respecting the Marvel brand back in 2017.

The cheesiness of MMPR is what made it iconic and kickstarted the franchise to be the success that it became. Sometimes money isn't the solution. The 2017 movie had no heart and didn't hype me up
@RonWeassly
@RonWeassly 15 күн бұрын
@@Neiri-qg2wk They didn’t even need to go for 90s cheesy nostalgia. The movie failed because they took way too many liberties with the characters. No one was the same as they were in the original series. Why aren’t Jason and Zack martial artist? And why isn’t Zack doing any of his hip hop karate? Why was Kimberly a reformed mean girl with little athletic ability? Why isn’t Trini soft and caring for everyone and still able to kick ads on her own? Billy was the only one who resembled the original character. And then there’s the actual story, which was awful. I’m not saying they should be perfect teens, but the originals were role models. Even they had their strengths and weaknesses to overcome. Just not stereotypical teen drama ones.

Honestly, I feel like that’s one of the biggest issues too. Because I hear many audiences stated that the movie was good when the more dramatic scenes between the actors were going down. Specifically, they were hanging out like the characters in Breakfast Club. Unfortunately, when you’re dealing with the whole Power Rangers part of the story, it seems like the director didn’t know how to mesh them properly.

Japan is approaching 50 years of Super Sentai while the US has 30 years of nostalgia towards Mighty Morphin Power Rangers and none of the subsequent series in the franchise. Wasting millions of dollars on a Movie adaptation of a show only seen as "cheesy" or "camp" isnt going to net you hundreds of millions of dollars on its own. Super Sentai has a movie every year too so this bloated cash grab is a hilariously unstable way to make movies.

It's funny how you mentioned they wanted to have a mega franchise like the MCU and the costumes where Iron-Man knock-offs, because that's exactly what they should've done, mimic the first Iron-Man movie! Think about it. The campy dialog but serious themes, the fun of the silly concept combined with the gritty action and aesthetic. It's almost a no-brainer. It's a damn shame they mimic everything BUT the core parts of what made the first MCU films. DC and Warner Bros are guilty of that too.

I think the want for a gritty/mature tone came from a lot of enthusiasm for the Power/Rangers fan film directed by joseph khan back in 2015. Thank you for giving this film a fair and open review even though you're not as big a fan of the whole franchise. I would be in the group that says A serious and dramatic Power Rangers story could work but it's also true it doesn't hurt to have a lot of classic humor. Either way you made a good point about this movie mixing the genres too much. I do like this movie and occasionally rewatch it sometimes but It's not a favorite and it's certainly not as good as the original Power Rangers films. Still I believe a serious Power Rangers story could work as long it had some humor in the right places too and was somewhat better written. Also next time they use Goldar in a project like this, "Let him talk!" another thing that will always bother me about this movie is slient Goldar. As a fan of the character I prefer him to have a dramatic and montrous voice.

A thing Super Sentai, Kamen Rider and even later seasons of Power Rangers show us is that this cheesy stories can have serious stories with deep and interesting characters and even dark themes. I do hope that whatever the next big Power Rangers project is embraces how silly the concept is without compromising while still telling a good story.

Your thoughts on the movie are the same as mine critique wise, except I'm also a HUGE PR fan so the movie was far below average to me. For some reason instead of adapting Mighty Morphin' properly, the writers made an action-adventure Breakfast Club. I was immediately turned off by it at the very start when the prank was happening. Consistently in every Power Rangers series the Rangers are chosen for being upstanding, moral people. In fact it's kind of a joke that the MM Rangers in particular were almost TOO perfect, always volunteering and raising money for charity. No reason why the movie cast couldn't have the same backgrounds and sweetness of the OGs.

I really enjoyed this movie- it had problems and was a very slow burn, but by the third act it just felt right- the Rangers and Zords in action went harder than it should have. Even in the slow moments, they spent it developing the characters and making them feel "real" instead of just high school stereotypes with one or two key attributes. So I appreciate it for trying.

One thing that I didn't like about this film was the time skipping; that didn't make any sense. I also didn't like how it was Mighty Morphin in modern day and how the megazord looked sooo different.

They messed up on the most important part, the design of the tech, suits and kaijus . The power ranger series where never known for great writing or dialogue but movie got that right. What they got wrong is the concept of memorable tech . If I close my eyes and try to remember one feature of the suites , i wouldn't be able to remember anything but the colors .Same with the Zords and Megazord ,weapons and Goldoon. Within seeing them morph once on the show you could pick out one or two memorable features , the teath , tusks , horns on the helmets seperate the suits and give them character. It doesn't need to be campy to project that just designed well .

Personally I felt it was a good start. The main problem was there was not much Power Rangers in a power rangers film, but somehow I was okay with it. I liked it and would have loved to see more. As it stands, I give it a see every couple of years and enjoy it. Rita was sort of weird in it and Zordon felt more nasty than a wise mentor type, but that is okay. This was thumbs up in my book.

I haven’t seen it in a while, but I think the movie is ok. Personally I think the writers should have taken a look at some Disney Era Power Rangers, they had a knack for telling some actually serious and nuanced stories while keeping it campy and colorful. I feel like the vibes of those shows with a blockbuster budget could have been something incredible.

To put it simply they didn’t know what they want to do with it, all they did was scramble potential commercials and sell it as a movie. The biggest example is the heavy-handed use of the Krispy Kreme, when they simply could’ve just had one of them work there. Which would’ve been a decent nod to the juice bar/rec center frequented in OG Series.

This movie was way better than it should be! That is what I tell people when I recommend it. It should have been a trainwreck between the changing writers, inconsistent tone, and re-design of the suits/zords. I still watch it once a year. And it must have done something right because, to my surprise, my gf naturally put her phone down to watch it with me pretty early in the movie. It may have felt like The Breakfast Club, but it was a decent rendition of it thanks to the actors.

I’ve said this so many times and I’m glad there’s a video highlighting it. Outside of the obvious financial flop. They used the complete wrong direction and formula for this movie. You don’t need 2 hours of movie for the team to BECOME power rangers, and for them to only be power rangers for literally 25 minutes! It’s a waste! And what’s worse, the correct formula has been shown over and over and over again and they still used the wrong strategy Orgin hero movies where the hero becomes the hero mid way through the film and the big actions starts mid way through the movie and it works: Batman begins Spider-Man 1 (Tobey) Iron Man Man of Steel Superman (Reeve) All these examples and they still used 2 hours to for high schoolers to become power rangers.

I wouldn’t mind a sequel to the 2017 film, but what I really want is an animated reboot of the OG series with an X-Men ‘97 style, edge, and slight crudeness. I love how X-Men ‘97 took a 90’s show that was being held back by its target audience and matured it. Thats what I want from PR. I want it to be in between Invincible and X-Men ‘97 on both a writing quality scale and a maturity scale Edit: yes this would have Tommy Oliver

I was a huge Power Rangers fan as a kid, loved the Mighty Morphin era, and some of the newer iterations, usually involving the OG, Tommy Oliver. This film was pretty decent but it was way too slow, they also used the music from the 1995 Power Rangers movie not the Original by Ron Wasserman... in the ONLY MOMENT that felt like the classic series, when the Zords were assembling, and it was very brief. Having the lore as well of Zordon being the ancient Red Ranger and Rita being the Green one was cool, but it wasn't explored at all after the opening scene, which is rather annoying, having the Green Ranger in the film especially as a villain, maybe in the later half would've been the best way to go, because he was and still is the BEST thing the franchise ever did, it would probably have drawn more people in. I think they knew this and tried to tease it for a potential sequel but we're never getting that. Around the same time the BOOM studios comics were doing really well, and they'd managed to bring the Mighty Morphin era into the present and have it feel nostalgic but up to date, they focussed on telling really good stories... especially having their best Ranger, Tommy Oliver being the overarching villain 'Lord Drakkon'. The idea of fusing his two Ranger powers, Green and White into one was great, make him more powerful and more villainous, like he'd never turned back... That made those comics so damn good, and if they have any sense they'd adapt that into any future production they may do. Also I'm so glad you actually pronounced Saban how I would... even if it's wrong. Lol

It's very easy, stop changing things. Make exactly what people are expecting. Continuity is inviolable, it doesn't matter if it's Citizen Kane or Barney, you piss off the fans, and no one else comes either. Star Trek has been learning this lesson for the last 20 years they have failed to grow the audience from 1992 even though they're spending five times more on each film

I don’t think Power Rangers will work on the silver screen because not many people will care. Many people who watched the series as kids moved on to other things they deemed more mature and now see PR as a child’s thing compared to what they watched later in their youth. I think a big budget tv show would work better.

What is more interesting about this movie, the main cast actually have some rocket launch to their careers after they starred. The biggest star is Naomi Scott of course, but don't forget about the others. Ludi Lin has Mortal Kombat and Aquaman on his belt, Dacre Montgomery joined Stranger Things, Becky Gomez returned to her singing career, even RJ Cyler build some decent stuff in TV.

tried this : put the original suit and the remake suit side by side, and monochrome it, can you tell the difference? the original's design's pop out beautifully, you can tell which one is which even without knowing the color, the NEW one on the other hand, EVERY SINGLE ONE OF THEM LOOKS THE SAME, boring concept, boring design, they tried too hard on the cool and edgy concept but they forgot how to have fun with it. ....oh and also let's talk about the megazord, like, seriously? the fact that they transmorphing into a blob of nano-tech instead of old school gattai combiner is probably the biggest sin for power ranger franchise, which by the way, what kind of animals are those? six legged mammoth? triceratops that looks like a giant beetle? sabertooth tiger that looks like a honey badger? they really emphasize michael bay-esque weird alien design and not in a good way ivan ooze might be a bad power ranger movie, but it's interestingly bad, be as it may, they still know how to make a cool power ranger scene, and the new one is just a boring mess, i never wanted to go out from the theatre as fast as i could because of how boring the movie is, well, that and pacific rim 2

As a fan, I was able to look past them, but it was clear that the majority of audience wouldn't stop noting it. (Looking at you Krispy Kreme...) Hence why we don't care about every iteration of power rangers after the original season.. the original movie had way better auita and helmets, they knew how to upgrade and keep the basic designs
