Community's Remedial Chaos Theory is the best episode the show ever did. From introducing the world to the darkest timeline, to giving us Troy and Abed's new apartment, it's kind of impossible to top. Here's why I think the episode works so well.

Yeah he says "Airplane Bathroom," but it sounds less like him setting himself up for a joke, and more just him reminiscing on a memory. (I don't care what Season 4 says, Pierce had sex with Eartha Kitt.) And even so, it'd pretty much be the only timeline he had justification to say it. It was teed up for him.

@@RemixedVoice Community's style of acknowledging meta-text through humour is much more recognized now. This was on network television when it came out, which was suited and content made for a broad audience. Which many at the time were not used to things like intertextuality in TV. Now with streaming and more ability to pick and choose what you would like to watch as well as Marvel films and other blockbusters normalizing intertext in their media. So the mode that Community uses really leans into this style.

@@RemixedVoice I think it's less that audiences have changed and more that network television draws in the wrong audience for a show like this. I watched on Hulu and torrented Community when it first ran because I didn't have a TV and even if I did wouldn't have wanted to be required to watch at a specific time. It was very popular 10 years ago, but ratings didn't show it because it never reached the people who might have been interested in it. Maybe it would have done better on Adult Swim like Rick and Morty. But then it would probably have been a completely different show.

@@fridginator I think personally that I dont like how in season 4 they act like troy has to care for abed (esp. when troy was in a relationship with britta), as in other episodes and seasons its clear the relationship is mutually beneficial, but he's still the same character and that character is a fairly good representation of an autistic person - of course, no single character can represent all autistic people but I think as a character he could help neurotypical people understand autistic ppl a little better.

But that would be so stupid, yes they make jokes about gay stuff and racism. But at the same time this show has the most exceptance. Troy is last man standing in the zomby Halloween episode. Shirly is the most badass (paintball2 and Hot Lava) everybody accepts the Dean. They even have the joke at the first christmas episode that the group is so diverse. Jewish, Christian, 5lvl laser budist, Jehova's, Muslim, atheist, Agnostic (in that order) this show is anything But racist or homophobic.

@@TheTombree that's my point. Advanced D&D wasn't racist either. It was a joke about not thinking about considering how your actions affect other people (which was the theme of the whole episode), yet Netflix and Hulu decided to remove it. This episode is so rewatchable because of how well written the script is. It isn't just 7 different stories, they did such an amazing job of having all the pieces for each time line from the start and it keeps making total sense how each of them plays out so differently. It also helps that it is a really funny episode straight through. Or that it does a great job of utilizing Community's biggest strength, it's cast and how they play off each other. You can make almost any constellation of it's characters and it makes for a unique, funny and interesting dynamic.

I think you nailed Jeff's character when you talk about not caring, but a good example of how he "wants to but is afraid to" would be from the first episode this season. the "we're gonna finally be fine" song, which is almost the "norm" for all of the other characters, but it takes place in Jeff's imagination. telling us, that he wants to let go of his inhibitions and let loose. but he's too afraid. i loved your video by the way :)

I’m just so glad that people are FINALLY watching this show! And that more videos are getting made about how good it’s episodes, characters, and writing was! I love that this episodes big takeaway is that the group is at its best when they push themselves to be their truest and best selves. They can go crazy and sing and dance their hearts out while also scolding Jeff for being manipulative. And because of that he gets to see that the group doesn’t always need a leader to police their every move. It shows that for as much as Jeff thinks the group needs him, they can be fine amounts themselves and he needs them maybe even more then he thinks. I really like what you said about Jeff and his insecurities, every other person who talks about this episode always seems to villainize Jeff and always misses the point of the ending and Jeff’s role. (And hey, my favorite episode of the show is the ass crack bandit episode, I see that dig...)

I don't think I have ever laughed so hard while simultaneously having my mind blown to the moon. I would argue this is the most entertaining 20 minute episode of any show ever made. It is the gold standard of a perfectly executed concept.

Community became my favorite show over the course of quarantine, the first paintball episode made me realize just how different it was willing to be compared to other shows i had watched, up until the 4th season it kept surprising me with new concepts and even the 5th and 6th season have redeeming and quality moments

This episode almost made me cry, at first I wasn't invested but then it evolved into a "what-if" scenarios of what would happen if any of the group goes missing, the consequenses have various degrees of dire with one exception: when Jeff goes away the mood of the group suddenly brightens, they start singing and dancing and even after Jeff comes back he doesn't join, he just sits to eat a slice of pizza, I can't help but interpret it as the show itself admiting that Jeff is the origin of all the toxicity in the group, both towards each other and outsiders, and it makes sense, Jeff constantly shuts people down the way he does with Brita when she wants to sing, the sad conclusion to take from this episode is that even the people he cares about are better off without him, the only redeeming part is that the group itself does not arrive to this conclusion. I agree that is among the best episodes, it's just a bit too tragic of a message.

I binged all of Community up into the fourth season, and didn’t realize it wasn’t a full season. So when the last episode was called “intro to finality” or whatever, I almost cried. It hit out of nowhere. It wasn’t ever the same since, I waiting weeks before starting season 5 This was one of my favorites. The first two paintball episodes, the zombie Halloween, stop motion Christmas, and one other I can’t remember were my favorite

Season 4 was definitely a lot worse than the other 3 seasons, but I do agree that people pick on it too much, in my opinion season 6 was so much worse than season 4 (with a few exceptions like the last episode). Season 6 for me had so many episodes that I was almost skipping because of how bad they were, plus I really feel they had no idea on what to do with Abed on season 6. I'm just glad that even though season 6 was truly awful, they managed to make a pretty good last episode, and give this amazing show a good ending.

I think it felt like it was trying to be Community too hard, if that makes any sense. It just over all felt a little surface level I guess. Plus I just think it is the most forgettable, though I'm not done with season 6 yet. But it does have one of my favorite episodes, Alternative History of the German Invasion
@Realmfaker

For me it's so much the other way around. Season 4 is has some funny/not bad episodes (Around 5). It would be a good season (not great) if it was a stand alone series instead of a season of pre-established Community. But as a Community season, homages happen randomly instead of organically (and feel a lot more like parodies), all main characters regress to their season 1 selfs like they didn't have arcs or mature through the last three years (or are even more one-note), jokes per scene are reduced, full of continuity issues (one which includes creating backstories for characters you didn't create), and even waaay more. While season 6 is one of my favourites, feels more grounded like season 1. Has one of the best pairings in Abed and Annie. Loved Frankie especially her dynamic with Jeff and the Dean. Britta gets some backstory which I liked. And the finale was very good. Shirley, Pierce and Troy were great but they didn't make the show for me and story wise it felt semi-good that they shouldn't be there anymore. Shirley gone was to out of nowhere yes, but that's only because it was as unexpected in real life.

The end of this episode always made me kind of sad because the group all gets along together so well when Jeff leaves. Granted, they all like him, but it seems that sometimes they operate better when he's not around.

But he's also responsible to keep the group together, like the time where everyone though that they had told their secrets, but actually only Shirley did, he was the one who came up to encourage everyone to also tell their secrets so Shirley wouldn't be ashamed and possibly leave. He does that a lot

Season 3 starts to make you despise the study group a little bit, as they become less of characters and more of caricatures, but then there's episodes like this that give me season 1 vibes, and I remember why I love the show.

This episode was brilliant, humorous and heartwarming at times - it perfectly captures the group dynamics and takes the show in a direction that sets up the tone for the rest of season 3. The Paintball episode was good as well, but for some reason this episode was where Community was at it's best.

This is the show for people who don't like sitcoms meant for the "general" audience, but instead made for a specific viewer in mind. The jokes on community aren't just surface level chit chat, but they explore deep concepts, perfects for nerds like us.

Dude, I started this video and was struggling to remember the episode even though I just binged the entire series on Netflix over a week. I paused it and watched the episode and somehow I missed the episode in my watch-through. I can't believe it, it was like the episode was skipped somehow. I must be in the darkest timeline. Good thing I watched this video or I would have never seen it. That makes the episode about the dark timeline attacking the prime timeline make so much more sense now.

Loved this episode so much because underneath this sci-fi plot is really just a character dynamic study about what happens to the group when one member leaves. And as we all discovered the absence of Jeff's cynicism had the best impact to the group, while Troy's being the worst one.

The 'deeper' part of Pierce's airplane bathroom joke is that he continues to bring it up out of nowhere. He even tried to say in one timeline that it came up 'organically', which it didn't. In the final timeline, someone says airplane bathroom, bringing it up organically. Pierce mutters 'airplane bathroom' to himself, but doesn't actually tell the story when he's given an opening too. It is a great episode, and this was a great video too!

Some of my favorite episodes of Community are: Abed's Uncontrollable Christmas - the one where they're all claymation animated Basic Rocket Science - where they fly the KFC flight simulator Digital Estate Planning - the only episode I actually feel any sympathy for Pierce Epidemiology - a classic Halloween episode that has become a staple for me every October Remedial Chaos Theory - like the Cap said, it's a perfect episode, But my personal favorite of them all is, Advanced Dungeons and Dragons - I had never even seen a game played before the episode aired, and it actually got me interested in trying it out for myself. It made one of the background characters the central focus, and explored the themes of bullying and mental health, and yeah, ... blackface. Also how could anyone not die laughing as Annie pantomimes a very graphic sex scene with Abed's elf maiden?

The third season of Community is peak Community. Its season opener aptly sets up how bonkers the rest of it is going to be. Personally, the third season is also my favorite one. So many great episodes in addition to this: Pillows and Blankets, Basic Lupine Urology, Documentary Filmmaking: Redux, Digital Estate Planning. All clear examples of how Community is a genius both comedically and creatively. The show has always been streets ahead, and I love how whenever the cast gets a reaction of “Oh, this show is one of the best shows!!” The cast’s response is always, “That’s what we’ve been telling you!!!!” Community is a gem. I love this show to bits.
