The Office had a lot of great story lines through the years, but perhaps none were better than the Michael Scott Paper Company. Still, that story may have had some seriously untapped potential.

I've always thought a fun episode would have been one featuring the other tenants of the Scranton Business Park. Instead of the clip show of "The Banker", I'd have loved seeing things from the point of view from businesses above and below Dunder Mifflin. Dwight firing the gun into the floor? Let's see the reaction from whoever was a floor down. The fire drill including Oscar climbing into the ceiling? What did that sound like from above? I just feel like it was a huge missed opportunity and I'll never get over it.

I personally don't mind clip shows. It is just a break for the writers to overcome writer's block, and in this age, we can completely skip it. The clip shows done by Community are the opposite examples, where they shoot entirely new scenes for the episodes instead of recycling old ones.

While I admire the idea of splitting the office in two rival units for the latter seasons, the producers were working on an exit strategy for Steve Carell for a while. Perhaps that factored into some of their thinking, to keep the office unified for a heart-warming goodbye.
@exoticxwhitekid2073
@exoticxwhitekid2073 4 жыл бұрын
Ideas and Men But on the contrary, what if they used this storyline to send Michael off. They spend a season doing the rivalry, then when Michael finds out he has to go to colorado for Holly that’s when he sells Michael Scott paper company and everyone goes back to Dunder Mifflin and everything goes back to normal

I love Pam and Michael's relationship and dynamic - she is the only one in the Office who really gets him and knows all the details about his behaviour and personality - and she was the only one who followed him and quit! she wasn't bland, she was just very insecure about herself and her own abilities. being a receptionist made her feel like she wasn't capable of doing anything more. however, after getting a taste of being a salesman in the Michael Scott Paper Company, she became more confident and assertive, which is why for example she gave herself the office administrator job.

Michael was a genius in these episodes “I don’t think I have to wait out dundermifflin , I think I have to wait out you .”
@nealkriesterer
@nealkriesterer 4 жыл бұрын
It wouldn't work. Michael Scott is not some secret genius. He does have some sales skill and intuition, but there is absolutely no way he could have handled running his own company in a market as competitive as paper. He was very poor with finances, terrible with time management, and had no source of upfront capital. The end. Company dead. Going on for even a full season would not have been believable AT ALL, and the storyline would have killed the show even faster. The Office was at it's best when it was relatable and realistic. Like you said, in the later seasons they became cartoons and it died. The idea of Michael Scott actually running a successful paper company for more than a few weeks is cartoonish.
@logprb5048
@logprb5048 4 жыл бұрын
The entire show is cartoonish. Dwight started a fire in the office causing stanley to have a heart attack and he was not fired. Michael had 3 vasectomies. Realistic stuff isn't really what this show is known for, though it is grounded in reality. Michael having a successful company would not be a stretch.
@nealkriesterer
@nealkriesterer 4 жыл бұрын
No, the "entire" show is not cartoonish. As I said before, The Office was at its best when it tried to be grounded and realistic. Those episodes are the funniest for a reason, because they are believable. The first few seasons were much more grounded than later on. Michael Scott running a successful paper company is not believable.
@logprb5048
@logprb5048 4 жыл бұрын
@@nealkriesterer Why is that not believable yet it's believeable that his branch is the most profitable in the entire company, that David Wallace invited him down to talk about his strategies? Why is it so difficult for you to stretch just a bit further
@nealkriesterer
@nealkriesterer 4 жыл бұрын
It's not a "little" stretch forward it's a giant leap. Branches doing better than each other is very complex and could be down to the simple fact that Dwight is the best salesman in the company.
@DcThaDon
@DcThaDon 4 жыл бұрын
Gotta say that Michael running a successful business was not going to be believable. The whole show kind of revolved around the goofy antics of Michael. It was later on showing you that the branch actually functioned well in spite of Michael’s lack of skills as a boss. Michael had two unreliable employees when it came to sales in Ryan and Pam. Getting clients is one thing but keeping your business afloat is another

Nah that would have been too hokey to do a whole series or serieses. A 3 or 4 part story is big enough. I personally don't think the series got old. I binged it on amazon rather than seeing it when it was out, so it's fresh to me. It didn't get old to me, but maybe weekly viewing was different.

This. Obviously you can see a slight deep in quality in seasons 8 & 9, but it's still not as huge difference as people make it out to be (like you said, maybe it was more visible to people who watched it on a weekly basis, rather than binge watched it like us). And some of my most favourite episodes are in seasons 5-7 (and I'm not talking about Micheal's Goodbye only).

I see a lot of people saying how having the office split up like that wouldn’t have worked but I personally love the idea. The Michael Scott Paper Company arc was always one of my favs but I agree the ending was a little lackluster and I think your version opens up a lot more opportunities for character moments, especially with having Dwight take over as manager, and then maybe when Michael comes back he replaces Dwight again and that’s a place for even more tension between them. I love your idea lol I wish that’s how it happened

I like it the way it is. Personally, I wouldn't have been able to buy the story any other way. I remember watching that arc when it was new thinking "how are they going to get out of this?" Had the company not been bought out it would have just sunk immediately. There's no way I would have been able to believe that a character like Michael Scott could start a successful enough paper company based on nothing to compete. If anything, that would have undermined his character.

I... Cannot say it's still going strong... I loved the Figgis Agency, but was not a fan of the coma seasons much. The best thing about the show is a combination of great script-writing and amazingly well-written characters, and if you reset them every year, they lose a major clog which made Archer one of the best written shows ever.
@Storyograph

Archer Vice was great and flipped the status quo (and the whole aesthetic) without compromising the plot Contrast directly with the coma stuff which was fine as a standalone but really frustrating since it stalled the main story for a full 3 seasons(!) following a major cliffhanger
