Jason Bourne's adventure started with The Bourne Identity in 2002 and went on to two sequels directed by Paul Greengrass that redefined action cinema. But since Bourne Ultimatum, things just haven't worked for the franchise. In this video I talk about the Matt Damon character, and why he has failed to stick around like 007 and even Ethan Hunt have.

I kinda think we need to get out of this “franchise” mindset for a lot of series. I don’t see Bourne as a franchise, I see it as a great trilogy with some sad attempts at franchising years later. Sometimes, it’s good to just let things end.

That is precisely correct. The problem is not the "Bourne franchise", the problem (with Bourne and so much else) is the framing in terms of "franchise" or IP. That studios use that framing I find despicable but understandable given the prevailing incentives. That anyone else would defies understanding...

The Bourne franchise is what we call a sunday afternoon dad movie. The kind of movie you sit down and watch with your old man when you come visit home from college. You don't rent it, it just comes on on cable. I'd be lying if I said I didn't love the series when I was growing up. It just sucks that the studio felt it needed to keep this franchise going. I haven't seen any Bourne beyond the original trilogy, but I do think a continuation could work in theory. While the amnesia was a good hook for the Jason Bourne character, the real emotion behind the series was the way Bourne and his fellow operatives were humanized. This line from Identity (reused in Ultimatum), sums up the series very well IMO: "Look at us. Look at what they make you give." There's also a detail from Supremacy that I really like, where Jason's previous handler, Nikki Parsons, explains that the Treadstone operatives were prone to depression and other mental health crises. There's a real sadness to a lot of the rival operatives in the series, and the way that they're run ragged and discarded so haphazardly. The fact that Jason's first mission wasn't even legally sanctioned by the CIA, and was instead a coverup for one man's greed, really nails this point home.
@filmreviewer117
@filmreviewer117 2 жыл бұрын
You summed it up brilliantly, Bourne is about an assassin with memory loss slowly discovering he was a terrible person and the guilt he feels trying to come to terms with who he really is. once that is resolved there is no more story as he's then just another assassin working against another shady goerment.

@beno1129
@beno1129 3 жыл бұрын
I agree, it was a solid movie. Although at the end (spoilers) Rachel Weisz's character saved Aaron Cross, not the other way around. In theory a series about other Treadstone assassins and their motivations doesn't sound too bad, but it's always 50:50 with these things
@opathoris
@opathoris 3 жыл бұрын
The Bourne Legacy is actually a very intelligent film - it documents the effects of Bourne's actions. I disagree with the assessment of Aaron Cross's (Jeremy Renned) back story. He was severely injured, with significant cognitive impairment. In addition to being hunted down and targeted for elimination because of Jason Bourne's actions exposing Treadstone in the first 3 movies, Aaron is also facing a terrifying decline in profound cognitive impairment. The shaky cam from Bourne Supremacy and Ultimatum is largely gone in Legacy which is also welcome.
@rhettgedies7467
@rhettgedies7467 3 жыл бұрын
@@opathoris I agree on everything except the shaky cam point. _Legacy_ does not suffer from losing it, but also doesn't really gain either. The two previous Bourne films are excellent in part because of the cinematography choice (though that does not mean I will validate and praise all the lazy shaky cam action films that came for years after).

@@darkspeed62 By the time they reach Manila, the espionage stuff is kind of over naturally though. He's basically finished cutting his dependency on the enhancement drugs/rebooting to full strength and the next step of their plan is to disappear permanently. They are almost out of the government's grasp besides that final wet team and enhanced assassin which leads to the third act chase. There isn't really any technical stuff left to do. Rachel Weisz's character knows the truth of them "putting down" the entire operation and its agents (I don't expect every Bourne movie to end with crippling the government, sometimes it's just getting out alive) due to Jason's actions. They are simply getting ready to "ghost" while Bourne's fallout is still being dealt with by Langley back home. End of plot.

I'm gonna tell how the technical parts of those movies: The Bourne Legacy it's dog shit, with a bad write and bad direct from Tony Gilroy, if the movie hasn't the name Bourne in the title, would been more watchable, has a bad editing, only with 2 parts cool, the fight in Marta's house and the Alaska Act. Jason Bourne: a mediocre script but a good direction from Paul Greengrass, the one who directed Supremacy and Ultimatum, the most ambitious action scenes, he has fun, it's not intelligent or whatever, but watch this movie like a another conventional action-movie that you won't care.

Glad someone else sees Liman’s merit. I don’t think the shakycam is as important as people say. It’s striking but to my mind the Bourne film’s most valuable trait is the grounded but skilful fight scenes. Liman established that and Greengrass built on it. And Tom Cruise has borrowed it for the Mission Impossible films. The heroes get wounded and limp. That was the truly revolutionary contribution to mainstream action cinema.

It was like a concert with all the best lighting, the best pyrotechnics, the best stage, and the best sound equipment, but in service to a band that is just desperately trying to recapture the glory days after its most visible and most talented frontman left. If someone who didn’t watch the trilogy watched Legacy, I expect that they would enjoy it. As aJason Bourne movie, I kind of think the studio just wanted to cash in on Hawkeye.

Excellent analysis. Renner did a great job. This is real untapped potential. The one weakness in that storyline is the fact that he didn't collect up the blue and green snow though. Well, that and the convenient satellite feed to Weisz's remote location. These films almost always overdo that.
@akleperp
@akleperp 3 жыл бұрын
I didn't catch it til the 2nd time watching Legacy but Renner talks about how (really) stupid he was before taking the meds and how much the accelerated brain made to him. It made the movie much more interesting and explains why he's so upbeat throughout given his predicaments and line of work. Also good motivation for him but ultimately it just wasn't talked about long or deep enough to make an impresion.

I too really liked Legacy. I think maybe people are put off by it because it takes a while before the action starts. The beginning can be kind of boring and confusing if you didn’t watch the original Bourne movies but once Renner meets up with the doctor it never really slows down
@thomasraywood679
@thomasraywood679 3 жыл бұрын
@@imanoldurango8213 Its main shortcoming is that in no way can it be seen to tie into the rest of the Borne saga. Neither early nor late is there any indication Jason ever underwent these drug therapies. The only indication of it is the fact that his name was carved into the bunk in that cabin. That's very thin, and they never built on it in even the slightest way.
@thomasraywood679
@thomasraywood679 3 жыл бұрын
I do agree with the satellite feed complaint, which drove me crazy in real time. I was like, you're kidding right? And yes, that whole "available feed" thing is way overdone, even in the more comprehensible Bourne movies, but especially in other intrigue flicks of lower quality. At first I too was bothered by Renner's failure to scrape up the blue and green snow. At that stage in the movie, of course, we had no way of knowing why it was so important to him. But you could definitely infer that it was of real importance to him, which made "giving up on it so easily" seem out of place. So did even the fact that it was melted, seeing as all we'd seen of it so far was pills. Then once you learn what the blue and green actually represent, the whole thing makes even LESS sense. The agents get the pills from a lab tech, and take them on a schedule. So it makes no sense why the pills OR their related chemicals would be being air lifted to OR from a remote cabin. The whole thing is just a soupy mess. Perhaps someone could piece it all together with some elaborate explanation, but if that's what it takes to "get it" you've lost a huge swath of your audience along the way. I just think they underestimated people's intelligence. I also think they were operating with a low amount of respect for the actual legacy of the series. That's irony for you.

I get what you are saying here. Batman Begins was darker and grittier, but not 'mainstream' enough to influence beyond much beyond the superhero genre, whereas Bourne Identity showed that the over-the-top action days of the late 80s and 90s (with Schwarzenegger, Stallone, Van Damm, et al) could be down and dirty and done 'realistically' and Bourne could be said to have directly influenced Bond, and many other more-mainstream action movies going forward.

The other key component that the others are missing is the character of Marie. She adds humanity and stakes. Killing her off was really a disservice to the series. Without Marie, Bourne is basically just a dead eyed, robotic, unstoppable killer.

die another day is a truly fascinating movie. It starts off dark and gritty bond is tortured and his own country leaves him to rot. Then he is released and its a different film. Every single line is a pun, every character is named so they can be a pun, mr kill, jynx, frost etc. The villain's plan is to cross minefield using a giant space laser, because hovercrafts didnt work once. It's a hilarious masterpiece of how not to write dialogue. its actually enjoyable in how bad it is written, not a single character can converse without making a pun. it defo makes the list of films so bad they are good. but how anyone making this film thought it wasnt going to nearly kill a 40 year old franchise is a marvel. But at least we got some bourne to make up the gap.

This was an interesting watch, as your videos almost always are, and it made me think of a series of movies I've recently rewatched. And I think they might be among my favorite "spy" movies, just because they aren't really spy movies at all. The loosely connected films based on the works of Tom Clancy. Hunt for Red October, Patriot Games, Clear and Present Danger, and Sum of All Fears. While the films vary in quality, they all have this fantastic tension that takes seemingly mundane setups that manage to put you on the edge of your seat. I personally haven't watched the Amazon series based on Jack Ryan and the upcoming one about John Clark and I'm not sure I want to. I don't want them to be explosive action packed boondogles like Bourne or Bond films, I want them to maintain that grounded take on the intelligence business. No matter what those Amazon series are like, I still think it's cool that these characters are going strong even with the passing of Tom Clancy.

I saw Jason Bourne in theaters, and we got there late so we had to sit in the front row. I couldn't watch the movie most of the time, it made me so motion sick. I eventually fell asleep because I had my head down in the dark. Afterwards it didn't sound like I missed much, lol.
