It's *BC & AD* For Before Christ & After Death The Catholic Church invented the modern calendar we use today. We should continue to use their terminologies. Especially since the before and after dates are the same coinciding with Jesus Christ's death. This wouldn't even be a debate if we were using a Muslim or Chinese calendar

I think I understand where you're coming from. I looked up and did some light reading about the Normans. I know I'm a year late to this comment thread, but would you mind explaining what you thought was missed in this video? When I was reading about the Normans, it seemed like they were the "filling"/"bread" in a boiling pot of a culture that was foreign to them. It intrigued me a lot when I read about how quickly and naturally the Normas adapted and modified external cultures to their own. I don't know anything on the topic other than what I've just quickly skim read, but were you dissapointed that the Normans' cultural impact was left out?

The Renaissance Humanists and the Conciliar movement both challenged the autocratic Roman view of authority. The humanists, among other things, showed that the Donation of Constantine was a forgery, and the Conciliar movement argued that the Pope was not so much the ruler of the Church as its spokesman.

Quite a few facts have been left out due to the focus on religulous conflicts. The call for a crusade started over 4.5 centuries after the Arab conquest of the region because the Turks had conquered the Arabs in the 1070s and reports of severe torture of pilgrims to Jerusalem reached the west. Yet the Arabs reconquered the region in the late 1090s, and reinstituted their policy of tolerance and protection for pilgrims- but it was too late, the bloodthirsty hordes of the west were closing in and they could not be dissuaded from their bloodlust...

Great video. I'd like to say though that after Rome cities and towns for the most part lost their importance and faded away. Europe was in a constant state of warfare and eventually became divided up into feudal states. The crusades disrupted the feudal system and were what gave way to the rise of towns, and the renaissance.
@danielgremio3
@danielgremio3 3 жыл бұрын
what primarily gave birth to towns was the agricultural revolution that happened by the end of the first mileniumm, the renaissence was heavely influenced by the fall of constantinopla the loss of power by the church and a new middle class ascension.
@martinschulz9381
@martinschulz9381 3 жыл бұрын
@@danielgremio3 Thanks for the reply, but I have to somewhat disagree. It was the crusades that initially got the ball rolling, and brought about the winds of change. Masses of Ignorant medieval country bumpkins seeing the outside world, cities, open markets, among many other things just opened up their backwards tradition bound closed off minds. Many European cities and towns like in Germany began in 1100s 12,00s and 13 in that time frame. The beginning of new secular world, knowledge, and new economic activity over time lessened peoples dependency on the church. Most of the Medieval Churches power was based on ignorance, and dogma; Knowledge was their worst enemy. I believe the Crusaders were first in Constantinople in 1000's, but did not conquer it until 1200s. I can only imagine what they must have thought having seen this advance city. When it comes to world history, farming is seldom mentioned, but has always played a huge role. The real agriculture revolution was started by the Dutch during the industrial revolution. The Dutch introduced modern mechanized scientific farming techniques that was leaps and bounds ahead of any other country. They developed advanced methods of tilling, crop rotation, as well as building up infertile soil where crops previously could not be grown. Their output per acre (or hectare) was was unfathomable by the backwards medieval farming minds of that time. Another thing that was introduced in that time that changed the world was food transport. Regions were no longer at the mercy of crop failure, famine caused by bad weather, pests or bights. Food could suddenly be transported in from other places. Off the subject, but I enjoy talking about it. I come from the farm, and I spent time in Europe traveling when I was young.
@sloaiza81
@sloaiza81 3 жыл бұрын
@@martinschulz9381 very eurocentric. The ball has been rolling for a loooong time. Before the crusades, muslims brought back greek thought and the Indian number system. Before them Alexander the great spread babylonian matemátics and greek thought to the east. Before them the phonecians invented the alphabet and spread it, before them...etc Bipedalism got the ball rolling.

Towns, villages and cities existed before, during and after the Renaissance. One can agree that the Crusades led to an increase in the size and importance of some of these areas but certainly did not give rise to them...as most were already there.

@martinschulz9381 3 жыл бұрын
@@joelspaulding5964 thanks for the comment. The first Crusade started 350 years before the Renaissance and the last Crusade ended nearly 100 years before the Renaissance. They failed to create a Holy land, but they succeeded in bringing back knowledge to backwards Fuedal Europe. including map making, ship building warfare, castle designs and building, farming, etc. etc. as well as the idea if towns, markets and commerce. Many of the towns and cities began in that period.

How did u get all the way to the renaissance and still call this a summary of the dark ages? The dark ages end at around 1000 AD. It's the post apocalyptic era that follows the collapse of the western roman Empire during which Europe begins to coalesce into empires of their own. It's fascinating and seldom explored in depth as it deserves. You tackled it with a shambles of trivia that failed to bring any of the players in it to life.

@@HoldYourBreat4 true i dont think it would be feasible to invade, conquer or enslave people on a landmass you found propabley by accident. Newfoundland was found early than colombus and it didnt involve a genocide like that in my native lands of Haiti/Hispaniola, from what we know sure there may have have been killings, with graves to be discovered but the facts remain vikings didnt cause the the damage upon humans there that they did in Europe all across the west tens of thousands were killed by Repeated viking raids, other countries like China and RuS or indigenous people of the north engaged in trade with them and thats acknowledged by their coins and furs found as far as Russia.. maybe these states were more militarily able to ward of Vikings and thus more in eyes of vikings deserving of equal trade.

That’s a lot of history. Dark Ages is misleading. Makes you think the history of that time was unclear.

Holy Roman empire aka the first reich. Christianity was never only West or East. There has since christianity began christian churches that were neither part of the east or west main churches. People of faith came up with inventions during the renaissance and age of enlightenment. People did not turn away from God because of those periods. For lots it strengthened the faith in God. Don't blame God if people don do as he instructed and have problems because of it.

The video is not concerned about the "Dark Ages" beyond the borders of Europe. It should be titled: "Europe's Dark Ages".
